The Preface

1 The first narrative, indeed, made I, concerning all things, O Theophilus, which Jesus began both to do and teach, -

1 The first account I (a)composed, (A)Theophilus, about all that Jesus (B)began to do and teach,

1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

1 I wrote the first narrative, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach(A)

1 In my first book, Theophilus, I wrote about everything Jesus did and taught from the beginning,

2 Until the day when, having given command unto the apostles, whom through Holy Spirit he had chosen, he was taken up;

2 until the day when He (C)was taken up to heaven, after He (D)had (b)by the Holy Spirit given orders to (E)the apostles whom He had (F)chosen.

2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

2 until the day He was taken up, after He had given orders through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen.(B)

2 up to the day when he was taken up to heaven after giving orders by the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.

Jesus Ascends To Heaven

3 Unto whom he also presented himself alive, after he had suffered, by many sure tokens, throughout forty days making himself visible unto them, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God.

3 To (c)these (G)He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of (H)the things concerning the kingdom of God.

3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

3 After He had suffered, He also presented Himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during 40 days and speaking about the kingdom of God.(C)

3 After he had suffered, he had shown himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during a period of 40 days and telling them about the kingdom of God.

The Holy Spirit Promised

4 And being in company with them he charged them, from Jerusalem, not to absent themselves, but - To abide around the promise of the Father which ye have heard of me,

4 (d)Gathering them together, He commanded them (I)not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for (e)(J)what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me;

4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

4 While He was together(a) with them, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise.(D) “This,” He said, “is what you heard from Me;

4 While he was meeting with them, he ordered them, "Don't leave Jerusalem. Instead, wait for what the Father has promised, about which you heard me speak,

5 Because, John, indeed, immersed with water; but, ye, in Holy Spirit shall be immersed, - after not many of these days.

5 for (K)John baptized with water, but you will be baptized (f)with the Holy Spirit (g)(L)not many days from now.”

5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”(E)

5 because John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit a few days from now."

The Ascension

6 They, therefore, having come together, began to question him, saying - Lord! art thou at this time duly establishing the kingdom unto Israel?

6 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, (M)is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”

6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

6 So when they had come together, they asked Him, “Lord, are You restoring the kingdom to Israel at this time?”

6 Now those who had gathered together began to ask Jesus, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?"

7 He said unto them - It is not yours to get to know times or seasons which the Father hath put in his own authority;

7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which (N)the Father has fixed by His own authority;

7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by His own authority.(F)

7 He answered them, "It isn't for you to know what times or periods the Father has fixed by his own authority.

8 But ye shall receive power when the Holy Spirit cometh upon you, and ye shall be my witnesses, both in Jerusalem and inall Judaea and Samaria and as far as the uttermost part of the land.

8 but you will receive power (O)when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be (P)My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and (Q)Samaria, and even to (R)the remotest part of the earth.”

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends(b) of the earth.”(G)

8 But you'll receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you'll be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

9 And having said these things, as they were beholding, he was lifted up, and a cloud caught him away from their eyes.

9 And after He had said these things, (S)He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.

9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

9 After He had said this, He was taken up as they were watching, and a cloud took Him out of their sight.

9 After saying this, Jesus was taken up while those who had gathered together were watching, and a cloud took him out of their sight.

10 And, while they were looking steadfastly into heaven as he was going his way, then lo! two men had taken their stand beside them, in white garments, -

10 And as they were gazing intently into (h)the sky while He was going, behold, (T)two men in white clothing stood beside them.

10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

10 While He was going, they were gazing into heaven, and suddenly two men in white clothes stood by them.(H)

10 While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, two men in white robes stood right beside them.

11 Who also said - Men of Galilee! why stand ye looking into heaven? This Jesus who hath been taken up from you into heaven, shall so come, in like manner as ye yourselves have gazed upon him going into heaven.

11 They also said, “(U)Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into (i)the sky? This Jesus, who (V)has been taken up from you into heaven, will (W)come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

11 They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you have seen Him going into heaven.”(I)

11 They asked, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you saw him go up into heaven."

Matthias Chosen To Replace Judas

12 Then returned they into Jerusalem, from a mountain called Olivet, which is nigh unto Jerusalem a Sabbath day's journey.

12 Then they (X)returned to Jerusalem from the (j)(Y)mount called (k)Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a (l)Sabbath day’s journey away.

12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem—a Sabbath day’s journey away.

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away.

13 And, when they had entered, into the upper-story went they up, where remained behind - both Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the zealot, and Judas the son of James.

13 When they had entered the city, they went up to (Z)the upper room where they were staying; (AA)that is, Peter and John and (m)James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, (n)James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and (AB)Judas the (o)son of (p)James.

13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.

13 When they arrived, they went to the room(J) upstairs where they were staying:Peter, John,James, Andrew,Philip, Thomas,Bartholomew, Matthew,James the son of Alphaeus,Simon the Zealot,and Judas the son of James.(K)

13 When they came into the city, these men went to the upstairs room where they had been staying: Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.

14 These all were giving constant attention with one accord unto the prayer, with certainwomen, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

14 These all with one mind (AC)were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with (AD)the women, and Mary the (AE)mother of Jesus, and with His (AF)brothers.

14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

14 All these were continually united(L) in prayer,(c) along with the women, including Mary(d) the mother of Jesus, and His brothers.(M)

14 With one mind, all of them kept devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women (including Mary the mother of Jesus) and his brothers.

Matthias Chosen

15 And, in these days, Peter, standing up in the midst of the brethren, said, - and there was a multitude of names, of one accord, about a hundred and twenty, -

15 (q)At this time Peter stood up in the midst of (AG)the brethren (a gathering of about one hundred and twenty (r)persons was there together), and said,

15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)

15 During these days Peter stood up among the brothers(e)—the number of people who were together was about 120—and said:

15 At that time, Peter got up among the brothers (there were about 120 people present) and said,

16 Brethren! It was needful for the Scripture to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spake beforehand through the mouth of David, concerning Judas, - who became guide unto them who apprehended Jesus;

16 “Brethren, (AH)the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, (AI)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.

16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

16 “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit through the mouth of David spoke in advance about Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.(N)

16 "Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the voice of David about Judas, who was the guide for those who arrested Jesus,

17 For that he had come to be reckoned among us and obtained the lot of this ministry. -

17 For he was (AJ)counted among us and received his share in (AK)this ministry.”

17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.

17 For he was one of our number and was allotted a share in this ministry.”(O)

17 because he was one of our number and was appointed to share in this ministry."

18 This man therefore had possessed himself of a field out of the reward of unrighteousness, - and falling headlong burst asunder in the midst, and forth gushed all his bowels;

18 (Now this man (AL)acquired a field with (AM)the price of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out.

18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

18 Now this man acquired a field with his unrighteous wages. He fell headfirst and burst open in the middle, and all his insides spilled out.(P)

18 (Now this man bought a field with the money he got for his crime. Falling on his face, he burst open in the middle, and all his intestines gushed out.

19 And it became known unto all them who were dwelling in Jerusalem, so that that field was called, in their language, Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood. -

19 And it became known to all who were living in Jerusalem; so that in (AN)their own language that field was called Hakeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.

19 This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that in their own language that field is called Hakeldama (that is, Field of Blood).

19 This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that this field is called in their language Hakeldama, that is, "The Field of Blood".)

20 For it is written in the book of Psalms: Let his encampment become desolate, and let there be none to dwell therein! And - his overseership, let a different man take!

20 “For it is written in the book of Psalms,(AO)Let his homestead be made desolate,And let no one dwell in it’;and,(AP)Let another man take his (s)office.’

20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.

20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms:Let his dwelling become desolate;let no one live in it;(f) andLet someone else take his position.(Q)(g)

20 "For in the Book of Psalms it is written, "Let his estate be desolate, and let no one live on it,' and, "Let someone else take over his office,'

21 It is needful then that, of the men who companied with us during all the time in which the Lord Jesus came in and went out over us,

21 Therefore it is necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that (AQ)the Lord Jesus went in and out (t)among us—

21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

21 “Therefore, from among the men who have accompanied us during the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us—

21 who was one of the men associated with us all the time the Lord Jesus came and went among us,

22 Beginning from the immersion by John until the day when he was taken up from us, that, a witness of his resurrection along with us, should one of these become.

22 (AR)beginning (u)with the baptism of John until the day that He (AS)was taken up from us—one of these must become a (AT)witness with us of His resurrection.”

22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day He was taken up from us—from among these, it is necessary that one become a witness with us of His resurrection.”(R)

22 beginning when he was baptized by John until the day he was taken up from us. Therefore, someone like this must become a witness with us to his resurrection."

23 And they appointed two, - Joseph, called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

23 So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus), and (AU)Matthias.

23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

23 So they proposed two: Joseph, called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias.(S)

23 So they nominated two men Joseph called Barsabbas, who also was called Justus, and Matthias.

24 And, praying, they said - Thou Lord! observer of the hearts of all men! shew forth whom thou hast chosen, - of these two, one; -

24 And they (AV)prayed and said, “You, Lord, (AW)who know the hearts of all men, show which one of these two You have chosen

24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,

24 Then they prayed,(T) “You, Lord, know the hearts of all; show which of these two You have chosen(U)

24 Then they prayed, "Lord, you know the hearts of all people. Show us which one of these two men you have chosen

25 To take the place of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas went aside, to go his way unto his own place.

25 to (v)occupy (AX)this ministry and (AY)apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.”

25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.

25 to take the place(h) in this apostolic service(V) that Judas left to go to his own place.”

25 to serve in this office of apostle, from which Judas left to go to his own place."

26 And they gave lots for them; and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

26 And they (w)(AZ)drew lots for them, and the lot fell (x)to (BA)Matthias; and he was (y)added to (BB)the eleven apostles.

26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

26 Then they cast lots(W) for them, and the lot fell to Matthias. So he was numbered with the 11 apostles.

26 So they drew lots for them, and when the lot fell on Matthias, he was enrolled with the eleven apostles.
