Summary

When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.

After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, "Brothers, you know that some time ago God chose me to preach to the Gentiles so they would hear the message of the gospel and believe.

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are following a different gospel --

But we did not surrender to them even for a moment, in order that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.

Dear friends, although I have been eager to write to you about our common salvation, I now feel compelled instead to write to encourage you to contend earnestly for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.

They determined

we have unanimously decided to choose men to send to you along with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul,

If you do this thing, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all these people will be able to go home satisfied."

Then after fourteen years I went up to Jerusalem again with Barnabas, taking Titus along too.

Certain

Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to send men chosen from among them, Judas called Barsabbas and Silas, leaders among the brothers, to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas.

So Peter invited them in and entertained them as guests. On the next day he got up and set out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.

The Spirit told me to accompany them without hesitation. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man's house.

Should

When they arrived in Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they reported all the things God had done with them.

The Lord said to Samuel, "Do everything the people request of you. For it is not you that they have rejected, but it is me that they have rejected as their king.

For since I am free from all I can make myself a slave to all, in order to gain even more people.

I went there because of a revelation and presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. But I did so only in a private meeting with the influential people, to make sure that I was not running -- or had not run -- in vain.

So, although I have quite a lot of confidence in Christ and could command you to do what is proper,

Both the apostles and the elders met together to deliberate about this matter.

The next day Paul went in with us to see James, and all the elders were there.
