Warning Visions

1 The Lord God showed me this: He was forming a swarm of locusts(A) at the time the spring crop first began to sprout—after the cutting of the king’s hay.

1 Thus the Lord (a)God showed me, and behold, He was forming a (A)locust-swarm (b)when the spring crop began to sprout. And behold, the spring crop was after the king’s (c)mowing.

1 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings.

1 This is what the Lord GOD showed me: Look! He was forming locust swarms as the latter plantings were just beginning to sprout. Indeed, the king had just taken his first fruit tax.

1 Thus the Lord God showed me [a vision], and behold, He was forming a swarm of locusts when the spring crop began to sprout. And behold, the spring crop was after the king’s mowing.

2 When the locusts finished eating the vegetation of the land,(B) I said, “Lord God, please forgive!(C) How will Jacob survive since he is so small?”(D)

2 And it came about, (d)when it had (B)finished eating the vegetation of the land, that I said,(C)Lord God, please pardon!(e)How can Jacob stand,For he is (D)small?”

2 And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.

2 And so it came about that when the swarm had finished eating the grass of the land, I was saying, "Lord GOD, forgive please! How will Jacob stand, since he is small?"

2 And when the locusts had finished eating the plants of the land, then I said,“O Lord God, please forgive! How can Jacob stand,For he is so small [that he cannot endure this]?”

3 The Lord relented concerning this.(E) “It will not happen,” He said.

3 The Lord (f)(E)changed His mind about this.“It shall not be,” said the Lord.

3 The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD.

3 So the LORD relented from this. "This will not happen," said the LORD.

3 The Lord revoked this sentence.“It shall not take place,” said the Lord.

Second Vision: Fire

4 The Lord God showed me this: The Lord God was calling for a judgment by fire.(F) It consumed the great deep and devoured the land.

4 Thus the Lord God showed me, and behold, the Lord God was calling to contend with them by (F)fire, and it consumed the great deep and began to consume the (g)farm land.

4 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.

4 This is what the Lord GOD showed me: Look! The Lord GOD was calling for judgment by fire, and it was drying up the great depths of the ocean and consuming the land.

4 Thus the Lord God showed me, and behold, the Lord God called for punishment with fire, and it devoured the great deep [underground sources of water] and began to consume the land.

5 Then I said, “Lord God, please stop!(G) How will Jacob survive since he is so small?”

5 Then I said,(G)Lord God, please stop!(H)How can Jacob stand, for he is small?”

5 Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.

5 So I kept on saying, "Lord GOD, forgive please! How will Jacob stand, since he is so small?"

5 Then I said,“O Lord God, please stop! How can Jacob stand,For he is so small [that he cannot endure this]?”

6 The Lord relented concerning this.(H) “This will not happen either,” said the Lord God.

6 The Lord (h)(I)changed His mind about this.“This too shall not be,” said the Lord God.

6 The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.

6 So the LORD relented from this. "This will not happen, either," said the Lord GOD.

6 The Lord revoked this sentence.“This also shall not be,” said the Lord God.

Third Vision: A Plumb Line

7 He showed me this: The Lord was standing there by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand.

7 Thus He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing (i)by a (j)vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand.

7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.

7 This is what he showed me: Look! The Lord was standing upon a wall that stood straight and true, with a plumb line in his hand.

7 Thus He showed me [a vision], and behold, the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand [to determine if the wall was straight or if it needed to be destroyed].(A)

8 The Lord asked me, “What do you see, Amos?”(I)I replied, “A plumb line.”Then the Lord said, “I am setting a plumb line among My people Israel;(J) I will no longer spare them:(K)

8 The Lord said to me, “(J)What do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,“Behold I am about to put a (K)plumb lineIn the midst of My people Israel.I will (k)(L)spare them no longer.

8 And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:

8 And the LORD was asking me, "What do you see, Amos?" I replied, "A plumb line." So the Lord said, "Look, I have set a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel. I will no longer spare them.

8 The Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,“Behold, I am setting a plumb line [as a standard]Among My people Israel [showing the defectiveness of the nation, requiring judgment].I shall not spare them any longer. [The door of mercy is shut.]

9 Isaac’s high places(L) will be deserted, and Israel’s sanctuaries will be in ruins;(M)I will rise up against the house of Jeroboamwith a sword.”

9 “The (M)high places of Isaac will be desolatedAnd the (N)sanctuaries of Israel laid waste. Then I will (O)rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”

9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

9 Isaac's high places will be destroyed, and the sanctuaries of Israel will be ruined. I will rise in opposition to the house of Jeroboam with my sword."

9 “And the [idolatrous] high places of Isaac (Israel) will be devastated and deserted,And the sanctuaries of Israel will be in ruins. Then I shall rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword [and destroy the monarchy].”

Amaziah's Opposition

10 Amaziah the priest(N) of Bethel sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you(O) right here in the house of Israel. The land cannot endure all his words,

10 Then Amaziah, the (P)priest of Bethel, sent word to (Q)Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has (R)conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words.

10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.

10 So Amaziah priest of Bethel sent a message to Jeroboam king of Israel. It said, "Amos has been conspiring against you in the very heart of the house of Israel! The land cannot bear everything he has to say,

10 Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel [site of the golden calf shrine], sent word to (a)Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words.(B)

11 for Amos has said this: ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will certainly go into exile from its homeland.’”(P)

11 For thus Amos says, ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’”

11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.

11 because Amos is saying this: "By the sword will Jeroboam die, and Israel will surely go into exile far from her homeland.'"

11 For in this way Amos has said, ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’”

12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Go away, you seer!(Q) Flee to the land of Judah. Earn your living(a) and give your prophecies there,

12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “(S)Go, you seer, flee away to the land of Judah and there eat bread and there do your prophesying!

12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:

12 So Amaziah kept saying to Amos, "Get out of here, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. Live there and prophesy there.

12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Go, you seer, run for your life [from Israel] to the land of Judah [your own country] and eat bread and live as a prophet there!

13 but don’t ever prophesy(R) at Bethel again, for it is the king’s sanctuary(S) and a royal temple.”

13 But (T)no longer prophesy at Bethel, for it is a (U)sanctuary of the king and a royal (l)residence.”

13 But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court.

13 Don't prophesy anymore at Bethel, because it's the king's sanctuary and a temple of the kingdom."

13 But do not prophesy any longer at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary and a royal residence.”(C)

14 So Amos answered Amaziah, “I was(b) not a prophet or the son of a prophet;(c)(T) rather, I was(d) a herdsman,(U) and I took care of sycamore figs.

14 Then Amos replied to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet, nor am I the (V)son of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a (m)grower of sycamore figs.

14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:

14 Amos replied in answer to Amaziah, "I am no prophet, nor am I a prophet's son, for I have been shepherding and picking the fruit of sycamore trees.

14 Then Amos replied to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet [by profession], nor am I a prophet’s son; I am a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs.

15 But the Lord took me from following the flock(V) and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to My people Israel.’”(W)

15 But the Lord took me from (n)following the flock and the Lord said to me, ‘Go (W)prophesy to My people Israel.’

15 And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

15 But the LORD took me from tending the flock and the LORD kept saying to me, "Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'

15 But the Lord took me as I followed the flock and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to My people Israel.’

16 Now hear the word of the Lord. You say:Do not prophesy(X) against Israel;do not preach(Y) against the house of Isaac.

16 Now hear the word of the Lord: you are saying, ‘You (X)shall not prophesy against Israel (Y)nor shall you (o)speak against the house of Isaac.’

16 Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.

16 "Very well then, hear this message from the LORD: "You are saying, "Don't prophesy against Israel, and don't preach against the house of Isaac."

16 Now therefore, listen to the word of the Lord: You say, ‘You shall not prophesy against Israel nor shall you speak against the house of Isaac.’

17 Therefore, this is what the Lord says:Your wife will be a prostitute in the city,(Z)your sons and daughters will fall by the sword,(AA)and your land will be divided upwith a measuring line. You yourself will die on pagan(e) soil,(AB)and Israel will certainly go into exile(AC)from its homeland.

17 Therefore, thus says the Lord, ‘Your (Z)wife will become a harlot in the city, your (AA)sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be parceled up by a measuring line and you yourself will die (p)upon (AB)unclean soil. Moreover, Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’”

17 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.

17 "Therefore this is what the LORD says: "Your wife will become a whore in the city, and your sons and daughters will die by the sword. Your land will be divided and apportioned, and you will die in a foreign land. Israel will surely go into exile, far from its homeland."'"

17 Therefore, thus says the Lord, ‘Your wife shall become a prostitute in the city [when the (b)Assyrians capture Samaria] and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided by a measuring line; you yourself shall die in an unclean and defiled [pagan] land, and Israel shall certainly go from its land into exile.’”
