Woe To The Complacent
1 Woe to those who are at ease in Zion(A)and to those who feel secure on the hill of Samaria—the notable people in this first of the nations,those the house of Israel comes to.
1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!
1 (A)Woe to those who are at ease in ZionAnd to those who feel secure in the mountain of Samaria,The (B)distinguished men of the foremost of nations,To whom the house of Israel comes.
1 "Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, to those who rest on the mountain of Samaria the famous men of the nations to whom the house of Israel came!
2 Cross over to Calneh(B) and see;go from there to great Hamath;(C)then go down to Gath(D) of the Philistines.Are you better than these kingdoms?Is their territory larger than yours?
2 Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: be they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?
2 Go over to (C)Calneh and look,And go from there to (D)Hamath the great,Then go down to (E)Gath of the Philistines.Are (a)they better than these kingdoms,Or is their territory greater than yours?
2 Cross over to Calneh and look around, then go on to that great city of Hamath, and from there go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory more extensive than yours?
2 Go over to Calneh [in Babylonia] and look,And from there go [north of Damascus] to the great city of Hamath;Then go down to Gath of the Philistines.Are they better than these kingdoms [of yours],Or is their territory greater than yours?
4 They lie on beds inlaid with ivory,(G)sprawled out on their couches,(H)and dine on lambs from the flock(I)and calves from the stall.
4 That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall;
4 Those who recline on beds of ivoryAnd sprawl on their (H)couches,And (I)eat lambs from the flockAnd calves from the midst of the stall,
4 lying on ivory beds, stretching out on your couches, eating lambs from the flock, and fattened calves from the stall,
4 Those who lie on [luxurious] beds of ivoryAnd lounge around out on their couches,And eat lambs from the flockAnd calves from the midst of the stall,
5 They improvise songs(a) to the sound of the harp(J)and invent(b) their own musical instruments like David.(K)
5 That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David;
5 chanting to the sound of stringed instruments as if they were David, composing songs to themselves as if they were musicians,
6 They drink wine by the bowlful(L)and anoint themselves with the finest oilsbut do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.(M)
6 That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
6 Who (K)drink wine from (c)sacrificial bowlsWhile they anoint themselves with the finest of oils,Yet they have not (L)grieved over the ruin of Joseph.
6 drinking wine from bowls, anointing themselves with the choicest of oils, but not grieving on the occasion of Joseph's ruin
7 Therefore, they will now go into exileas the first of the captives,(N)and the feasting(O) of those who sprawl outwill come to an end.
7 Therefore now shall they go captive with the first that go captive, and the banquet of them that stretched themselves shall be removed.
7 Therefore, they will now (M)go into exile at the head of the exiles,And the (N)sprawlers’ (d)banqueting will (e)pass away.
7 therefore you will be the first to go into exile, and the celebrations of those who are lounging will end."
7 Therefore, they will now go into exile with the first of the captives,And the cultic revelry and banqueting of those who lounge around [on their luxurious couches] will pass away.
Yahweh Abhors Israel's Pride
8 The Lord God has sworn by Himself(P)—this is the declaration of Yahweh, the God of Hosts:I loathe Jacob’s pride(Q)and hate his citadels,(R)so I will hand over the city(S) and everything in it.
8 The Lord GOD hath sworn by himself, saith the LORD the God of hosts, I abhor the excellency of Jacob, and hate his palaces: therefore will I deliver up the city with all that is therein.
8 The Lord (f)God has (O)sworn by Himself, the Lord God of hosts has declared:“I (P)loathe the arrogance of Jacob,And (g)detest his (Q)citadels;Therefore I will (R)deliver up the city and (h)all it contains.”
8 "The Lord GOD has sworn by himself," declares the LORD, the God of the Heavenly Armies, "I utterly detest the arrogance of Jacob; I hate his fortresses; and I will deliver up the city, along with everyone in it.
8 The Lord (a)God has sworn [an oath] by Himself—the Lord God of hosts, says:“I loathe and reject the [self-centered] arrogance of Jacob (Israel),And I hate his palaces and citadels;Therefore, I shall hand over the [idolatrous] city [of Samaria] with all that it contains [to the Assyrian invaders].”
10 A close relative(c) and burner(d)(U) will remove his corpse(e) from the house. He will call to someone in the inner recesses of the house, “Any more with you?”That person will reply, “None.”Then he will say, “Silence, because Yahweh’s name must not be invoked.”(V)
10 And a man's uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.
10 Then one’s (i)uncle, or his (j)(T)undertaker, will lift him up to carry out his bones from the house, and he will say to the one who is in the innermost part of the house, “Is anyone else with you?” And that one will say, “No one.” Then he will (k)answer, “(U)Keep quiet. For (l)the name of the Lord is (V)not to be mentioned.”
10 One's relative will pick up the corpse to carry them from the house for burning, saying to whomever remains inside the house, "Is there anyone still with you?' And he will say, "No.' He will respond, "Be quiet, because we do not mention the name "LORD".'
10 Then one’s uncle, or his undertaker, shall come to bring the [disease-infected] body out of the house, [to cremate it], and he will say to another in the farthest part of the house, “Is there anyone else with you?” And that one will say, “No one.” Then he will respond, “Hush! Keep quiet! For the name of the Lord is not to be mentioned [even casually, for fear that we might invoke even more punishment].”(D)
11 For the Lord commands:The large house will be smashed to pieces,and the small house to rubble.(W)
11 For, behold, the LORD commandeth, and he will smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts.
11 For behold, the Lord is going to (W)command that the (X)great house be smashed to pieces and the small house to fragments.
11 For indeed, the LORD is giving the command and he will smash the large house to rubble and the small house into bits.
11 For behold, the Lord is going to command that the great house be smashed to pieces and the small house to fragments.
12 Do horses gallop on the cliffs;does anyone plow there with oxen?(f)Yet you have turned justice into poison(X)and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood(Y)—
12 Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow there with oxen? for ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:
12 Do horses run on rocks?Or does one plow (m)them with oxen?Yet you have turned (Y)justice into poisonAnd the fruit of righteousness into (n)wormwood,
12 "Horses don't run over bare rock, do they? One doesn't plow rock with oxen, does he? But you have turned justice to gall, and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness.
12 Do horses run on rocks?Do men plow rocks with oxen? [Of course not!]Yet you have turned justice into poisonAnd the fruit of righteousness into wormwood (bitterness),
13 you who rejoice over Lo-debar(Z)and say, “Didn’t we capture Karnaimfor ourselves by our own strength?”(AA)
13 Ye which rejoice in a thing of nought, which say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?
13 You who rejoice in (o)(Z)Lodebar,(p)And say, “Have we not (AA)by our own strength taken (q)Karnaim for ourselves?”
13 You rejoice in nothing worth mentioning that is, you keep on saying, "We captured Karnaim by our own strength of will and by our own effort, didn't we?'
14 But look, I am raising up a nationagainst you, house of Israel(AB)—this is the declaration of the Lord,the God of Hosts—and they will oppress youfrom the entrance of Hamath(g)(AC)to the Brook of the Arabah.(h)
14 But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith the LORD the God of hosts; and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hemath unto the river of the wilderness.
14 “For behold, (AB)I am going to raise up a nation against you,O house of Israel,” declares the Lord God of hosts,“And they will afflict you from the (AC)entrance of HamathTo the (AD)brook of the Arabah.”
14 "So look, house of Israel! I will raise up a nation against you," declares the LORD, the God of the Heavenly Armies, "and they will harass you from the entrance of Hamath to the wadi of the wilderness."
14 “For behold, I am going to stir up a nation against you,O house of Israel,” says the Lord, the God of hosts,“And they will afflict and torment you [to the entire limits of Israel] from the entrance of Hamath [in the north]To the brook of the Arabah [in the south].”
