A Basket Of Ripe Fruit

1 The Lord God showed me this: A basket of summer fruit.

1 Thus the Lord (a)God showed me, and behold, there was a basket of summer fruit.

1 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and behold a basket of summer fruit.

1 This is what the Lord GOD showed me: Look! A basket of summer fruit!

1 Thus the Lord God showed me [a vision], and behold, there was a basket of [overripe] summer fruit.

2 He asked me, “What do you see, Amos?”(A)I replied, “A basket of summer fruit.”(B)The Lord said to me, “The end has come for My people Israel;(C) I will no longer spare them.(D)

2 He said, “What do you see, Amos?” And (A)I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the Lord said to me, “The (B)end has come for My people Israel. I will (b)(C)spare them no longer.

2 And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more.

2 And he was asking, "What do you see, Amos?" I answered, "A basket of summer fruit." Then the LORD told me, "The end approaches for my people Israel. I will no longer spare them.

2 And He said, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the Lord said to me, “The end has come for My people Israel. I will spare them no longer [for the nation is ripe for judgment].

3 In that day the temple(a) songs(E) will become wailing”(F)—this is the Lord God’s declaration. “Many dead bodies, thrown everywhere!(G) Silence!”(H)

3 (c)The (D)songs of the palace will turn to (E)wailing in that day,” declares the Lord God. “Many will be the (F)corpses; in every place (d)they will cast them forth (e)in silence.”

3 And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord GOD: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.

3 At that time," declares the Lord GOD, "the temple songs will be wailing. Many bodies will accumulate everywhere.

3 In that day, the songs of the palace shall turn to wailing,” says the Lord God. “There will be many dead bodies; in [sacred] silence they will throw them everywhere.”

Israel's Doom

4 Hear this, you who trample on the needy(I)and do away with the poor of the land,(J)

4 Hear this, you who (f)(G)trample the needy, to do away with the humble of the land,

4 Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail,

4 "Hear this, you who are swallowing up the needy, who intend to make the poor of the land fail,

4 Hear this, you who trample down the needy, and do away with the poor of the land,

5 asking, “When will the New Moon be overso we may sell grain,(K)and the Sabbath,so we may market wheat?(L)We can reduce the measurewhile increasing the price(b)and cheat with dishonest scales.(M)

5 saying,“When will the (H)new moon (g)be over,So that we may sell grain,And the (I)sabbath, that we may open the wheat market,To make the (h)bushel smaller and the shekel bigger,And to (J)cheat with (i)dishonest scales,

5 Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit?

5 and who are saying, "When will the New Moon fade so we may sell grain, and the Sabbath conclude so we may market winnowed wheat? shortchanging the measure, raising the price, falsifying the scales by treachery,

5 saying,“When will the New Moon [festival] be overSo that we may sell grain,And the Sabbath ended so that we may open the wheat market,Making the ephah [measure] smaller and the shekel bigger [that is, selling less for a higher price]And to cheat by falsifying the scales,

6 We can buy the poor with silverand the needy for a pair of sandals(N)and even sell the chaff!”

6 So as to (K)buy the helpless for (j)moneyAnd the needy for a pair of sandals,And that we may sell the refuse of the wheat?”

6 That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat?

6 buying the poor for cash, and the needy for a pair of sandals, selling chaff mixed in with the wheat.'

6 So that we may buy the poor [as slaves] for silver [since they are unable to support themselves]And the (a)needy for a pair of sandals,And that we may sell the leftovers of the wheat [as if it were a good grade of grain]?”

7 The Lord has sworn(O) by the Pride of Jacob:(c)(P)I will never forget all their deeds.(Q)

7 The Lord has (L)sworn by the (M)pride of Jacob,“Indeed, I will (N)never forget any of their deeds.

7 The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works.

7 "The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: I will never forget anything they have done.

7 The Lord has sworn [an oath] by the pride of Jacob,“Surely I shall never forget [nor leave unpunished] any of their [rebellious] acts.

8 Because of this, won’t the land quake(R)and all who dwell in it mourn?(S)All of it will rise like the Nile;(T)it will surge and then subsidelike the Nile in Egypt.(U)

8 “Because of this will not the land (O)quakeAnd everyone who dwells in it (P)mourn?Indeed, all of it will (Q)rise up like the Nile,And it will be tossed aboutAnd subside like the Nile of Egypt.

8 Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? and it shall rise up wholly as a flood; and it shall be cast out and drowned, as by the flood of Egypt.

8 Surely the land will tremble because of this, won't it? And all who live in it will mourn, won't they? The entire land will swell up like a flooded river. It will be stirred up and then will sink like the river of Egypt.

8 “Because of this [coming judgment] will the land not quakeAnd everyone mourn who dwells in it?Indeed, all of it shall rise up like the Nile,And it will be tossed around [from the impact of judgment]And [afterward] subside again like the Nile of Egypt.

10 I will turn your feasts into mourning(X)and all your songs into lamentation;(Y)I will cause everyone(d) to wear sackcloth(Z)and every head to be shaved.(AA)I will make that grieflike mourning for an only son(AB)and its outcome like a bitter day.

10 “Then I will (T)turn your festivals into mourningAnd all your songs into (l)lamentation; And I will bring (U)sackcloth on everyone’s loinsAnd baldness on every head. And I will make it (V)like a time of mourning for an only son,And the end of it will be like a bitter day.

10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.

10 I will turn your festivals into mourning, and all of your songs to dirges. I will cause all of you to put on sackcloth and to shave all of your heads. I will make that time like mourning for an only son, and its conclusion will be like the end of a bitter day."

10 “And I shall turn your festivals and feasts into mourningAnd all your songs into dirges (funeral poems to be sung); And I shall cause sackcloth to be put on everyone’s (b)loinsAnd baldness on every head [shaved for mourning].And I shall make that time like a time of mourning for an only son [who has died],And the end of it shall be like a bitter day.
