2 Let my teaching fall like rainand my word settle like dew, like gentle rain on new grassand showers on tender plants.

2 May my instructions descend like rain and may my words flow like dew, as light rain upon the grass, and as showers upon new plants.

6 Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?

6 Is this how you repay the Lord, you foolish and senseless people?Isn’t He your Father and Creator?Didn’t He make you and sustain you?

6 This is not the way to repay the LORD, is it, you foolish and witless people? Is he not your father, who bought you, formed you, and established you?

6 “Do you thus repay the Lord,O foolish and unwise people? Is not He your Father who has acquired you [as His own]?He has made you and established you [as a nation].

10 The LORD found him in a desert land, in a barren, eerie wilderness. He surrounded, cared for, and guarded him as the pupil of his eye.

10 “He found him in a desert land,In the howling wasteland of a wilderness; He kept circling him, He took care of him,He protected him as the (a)apple of His eye.

11 (U)Like an eagle that stirs up its nest,That hovers over its young,(V)He spread His wings and caught them,He carried them on His pinions.

11 As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings:

11 He watches over(d) His nest like an eagleand hovers over His young; He spreads His wings, catches him,and lifts him up on His pinions.(D)

11 Like an eagle stirs its nest, hovering near its young, spreading out his wings to take him and carry him on his pinions,

13 He made him ride on the heights of the land(E)and eat the produce of the field. He nourished him with honey from the rockand oil from flint-like rock,

15 Jacob dined until satisfied; Jeshurun grew fat and kicked. He grew fat, coarse, and gross, so that he abandoned the God who made him and spurned the Rock that was his salvation.

16 (AH)They made Him jealous with strange gods;(AI)With abominations they provoked Him to anger.

16 They provoked him to jealousy over foreigners and to anger over detestable things.

16 “They provoked Him to jealousy with strange gods [by denying Him the honor and loyalty that is rightfully and uniquely His];And with repulsive acts they provoked Him to anger.

17 (AJ)They sacrificed to demons who were not God,(AK)To gods whom they have not known,(AL)New gods who came lately,Whom your fathers did not dread.

17 They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.

18 You ignored the Rock who gave you birth;you forgot the God who gave birth to you.

18 You neglected the Rock that fathered you; you abandoned God, who was awaiting your birth.

18 “You were unmindful of the Rock who bore you,And you forgot the God who gave you birth.

A Word Of Judgment

19 (AO)The Lord saw this, and spurned them(AP)Because of the provocation of His sons and daughters.

19 And when the LORD saw it, he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters.

19 When the Lord saw this, He despised them, provoked to anger by His sons and daughters.

19 The LORD saw it and became jealous, provoked by his sons and daughters.

19 “The Lord saw it, and rejected them,Out of indignation with His sons and His daughters.

20 “Then He said, ‘I will hide My face from them,(AQ)I will see what their end shall be;(AR)For they are a perverse generation,(AS)Sons in whom is no faithfulness.

20 And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith.

20 He said: “I will hide My face from them;I will see what will become of them, for they are a perverse generation—unfaithful children.

20 So he said: "Let me hide my face from them. I will observe what their end will be, because they are a perverted generation, children within whom there is no loyalty.

20 “Then He said, ‘I will hide My face from them,I will see what their end shall be;For they are a perverse generation,Sons in whom there is no faithfulness.

21 (AT)They have made Me jealous with what is not God;They have provoked Me to anger with their (e)(AU)idols.(AV)So I will make them jealous with those who are not a people;I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation,

21 They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

21 They have provoked My jealousywith their so-called gods;(i)they have enraged Me with their worthless idols. So I will provoke their jealousywith an inferior people;(j)I will enrage them with a foolish nation.(I)

21 They provoked me to jealousy over non-gods, and to be angry over their vanity. Now I'll provoke them to jealousy over a non-people; and over a foolish nation I'll provoke them to anger.

21 ‘They have made Me (b)jealous with what is not God;They have provoked Me to anger with their idols. So I will make them jealous with those who are not a people;I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

22 (AW)For a fire is kindled in My anger,And burns to the lowest part of (f)Sheol,(AX)And consumes the earth with its yield,And sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.

22 For fire has been kindled because of My angerand burns to the depths of Sheol;it devours the land and its produce, and scorches the foundations of the mountains.

22 For a fire breaks out in my anger burning to the deepest part of the afterlife, consuming the earth and its produce and igniting the foundations of the mountains.

22 ‘For a fire is kindled by My anger,And it burns to the depths of Sheol (the place of the dead, the nether world),It devours the earth with its yield,And sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

23 (AY)I will heap misfortunes on them;(AZ)I will use My arrows on them.

23 I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend mine arrows upon them.

23 “I will pile disasters on them;I will use up My arrows against them.

23 I'll bury them in misfortunes and bring them to an end with my arrows.

23 ‘I will heap misfortunes on them;I will use My arrows on them.

24 (BA)They will be wasted by famine, and consumed by (g)plague(BB)And bitter destruction;(BC)And the teeth of beasts I will send upon them,(BD)With the venom of crawling things of the dust.

24 They shall be burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.

24 They will be weak from hunger, ravaged by pestilence and bitter plague;I will unleash on them wild beasts with fangs,as well as venomous snakes that slither in the dust.

24 Emaciated from famine, feverish from plague, and destroyed by bitterness, I'll send fanged beasts against them, along with poisonous snakes that glide through the dust.

24 ‘They will be wasted by hunger, and consumed by plagueAnd a bitter destruction; And I will send the teeth of beasts against them,With the venom of crawling things of the dust.

25 (BE)Outside the sword will bereave,And inside terror—(BF)Both young man and virgin,The nursling with the man of gray hair.

25 The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs.

25 Outside, the sword will take their children, and inside, there will be terror;the young man and the young woman will be killed, the infant and the gray-haired man.(J)

25 Outside, the sword will cause bereavement; within, there will be terror for the young man and virgin alike, also for the nursing infant and the aged man."

25 ‘Outside the sword will bereave,And inside [the chambers] terror—For both young man and virgin,For the nursing child and the man of gray hair.

The Weakness Of Other Gods

26 ‘I would have said, “(BG)I will cut them to pieces,(BH)I will remove the memory of them from men,”

26 I said, I would scatter them into corners, I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men:

26 “I would have said: I will cut them to pieces(k)and blot out the memory of them from mankind,

26 "I said, "I will scatter them, erasing their memory from the human race,

26 ‘I would have said, “I will cut them to pieces [scattering them far away],I will remove the memory of them from men,”

27 Had I not feared the provocation by the enemy,That their adversaries would misjudge,That they would say, “(BI)Our hand is (h)triumphant,And the Lord has not done all this.”’

27 Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely, and lest they should say, Our hand is high, and the LORD hath not done all this.

27 if I had not feared insult from the enemy,or feared that these foes might misunderstandand say: ‘Our own hand has prevailed;it wasn’t the Lord who did all this.’”

27 if it weren't for dreading the taunting of their enemies otherwise, their adversary might misinterpret and say, "Our power is great. It isn't the LORD who made all of this happen."'"

27 Had I not feared the provocation of the enemy,That their adversaries would misjudge,That they would say, “Our [own] hand has prevailed,And the Lord has not done all this.”’

28 (BJ)For they are a nation (i)lacking in counsel,And there is no understanding in them.

28 For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them.

28 Israel is a nation lacking sensewith no understanding at all.(l)

28 They are a nation devoid of purpose and without insight.

28 “For they are a nation devoid of counsel,And there is no understanding in them.

29 (BK)Would that they were wise, that they understood this,(BL)That they would discern their (j)future!

29 O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!

29 If only they were wise, they would figure it out;they would understand their fate.

29 O, that they were wise to understand this and consider their future!

29 “O that they were wise, that they understood this,That they could discern their future and ultimate fate!

30 (BM)How could one chase a thousand,And two put ten thousand to flight,Unless their (BN)Rock had sold them,And the Lord had given them up?

30 How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?

30 How could one man pursue a thousand,or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the Lord had given them up?

30 How can one person chase a thousand of them and two put a myriad to flight, unless their Rock delivers them and the LORD gives them up?

30 “How could one chase a thousand,And two put ten thousand to flight,Unless their Rock had sold them,And the Lord had given them up?

31 “Indeed their rock is not like our Rock,(BO)Even our enemies (k)themselves judge this.

31 For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.

31 But their “rock” is not like our Rock;even our enemies concede.

31 For their rock isn't like our Rock, as even our enemies admit.

31 “For their rock is not like our Rock,Even our enemies themselves judge this.

32 “For their vine is from the vine of Sodom,And from the fields of Gomorrah;Their grapes are grapes of (BP)poison,Their clusters, bitter.

32 For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter:

32 For their vine is from the vine of Sodomand from the fields of Gomorrah.Their grapes are poisonous;their clusters are bitter.

32 Instead, their vine is from the vines of Sodom and the vineyards of Gomorrah. Their grapes are poisonous, their clusters bitter.

32 “For their vine is from the vine of Sodom,And from the fields of Gomorrah;Their grapes are grapes of poison,Their clusters, bitter.

33 “Their wine is the venom of (l)serpents,And the (m)deadly poison of cobras.

33 Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.

33 Their wine is serpents’ venom, the deadly poison of cobras.

33 Their wine is the venom of serpents, a poisonous cobra.

33 “Their wine is the venom of serpents,And the deadly poison of vipers.

34 (BQ)Is it not laid up in store with Me,Sealed up in My treasuries?

34 Is not this laid up in store with me, and sealed up among my treasures?

34 “Is it not stored up with Me,sealed up in My vaults?

34 "Is this not kept in reserve, sealed up with me in my treasury?

34 ‘Is it not laid up in store with Me,Sealed up in My treasuries?

35 (BR)Vengeance is Mine, and retribution,(BS)In due time their foot will slip;(BT)For the day of their calamity is near,And the impending things are hastening upon them.’

35 To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.

35 Vengeance(m) belongs to Me; I will repay.(n)(K)In time their foot will slip, for their day of disaster is near, and their doom is coming quickly.”

35 To me belong vengeance and recompense. In due time their feet will slip, because their time of calamity is near and the things prepared for them draw near.

35 ‘Vengeance is Mine, and retribution,In due time their foot will slip; For the day of their disaster is at hand,And their doom hurries to meet them.’

36 (BU)For the Lord will vindicate His people,(BV)And will have compassion on His servants,When He sees that their (n)strength is gone,And there is none remaining, bond or free.

36 For the LORD shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left.

36 The Lord will indeed vindicate His peopleand have compassion on His servants(L)when He sees that their strength is goneand no one is left—slave or free.

36 For the LORD will vindicate his people and bring comfort to his servants, because he will observe that their power has waned, when neither prisoner nor free person remain.

36 “For the Lord will vindicate His people,And will have compassion on His servants,When He sees that their strength (hand) is gone,And none remains, whether bond or free.

37 “And He will say, ‘(BW)Where are their gods,The rock in which they sought refuge?

37 And he shall say, Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted,

37 He will say: “Where are their gods, the ‘rock’ they found refuge in?

37 "He will say, "Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge?

37 “And He will say, ‘Where are their gods,The rock in which they took refuge?

38 (BX)Who ate the fat of their sacrifices,And drank the wine of their drink offering?(BY)Let them rise up and help you,Let them be your hiding place!

38 Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? let them rise up and help you, and be your protection.

38 Who ate the fat of their sacrificesand drank the wine of their drink offerings?Let them rise up and help you;let it(o) be a shelter for you.

38 Who ate the fat of their offerings and drank the wine that was their drink offering? Let them rise and help you and be your hiding place!'

38 ‘Who ate the fat of their sacrifices,And drank the wine of their drink offering?Let them rise up and help you,Let them be your hiding place!

The Vindication Of The Lord

39 (BZ)See now that I, I am He,(CA)And there is no god besides Me;(CB)It is I who put to death and give life.(CC)I have wounded and it is I who heal,(CD)And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.

39 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.

39 See now that I alone am He;there is no God but Me.(M)I bring death and I give life;I wound and I heal.No one can rescue anyone from My hand.(N)

39 "Look now! I AM, and there is no other god besides me. I myself cause death and I sustain life; I wound severely and I also heal; from my power no one can deliver.

40 For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever.

40 I raise My hand to heaven and declare:As surely as I live forever,

40 "I solemnly swear to heaven I say "As certainly as I'm alive and living forever,

40 ‘Indeed, I lift up My hand to heaven,And say (swear an oath), as I live forever,

41 (CF)If I sharpen My (o)flashing sword,And My hand takes hold on justice,(CG)I will render vengeance on My adversaries,And I will repay those who hate Me.

41 If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me.

41 when I sharpen My flashing sword, and My hand takes hold of judgment,I will take vengeance on My adversariesand repay those who hate Me.

41 I'll whet my shining sword, with my hands in firm grasp of judgment. I'll show vengeance on my adversary and repay those who keep on hating me.

41 If I sharpen the lightning of My sword,And My hand takes hold of judgment,I will render vengeance on My adversaries,And I will repay those who hate Me.

42 (CH)I will make My arrows drunk with blood,(CI)And My sword will devour flesh,With the blood of the slain and the captives,From the long-haired (p)leaders of the enemy.’

42 I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy.

42 I will make My arrows drunk with bloodwhile My sword devours flesh—the blood of the slain and the captives, the heads of the enemy leaders.”(p)

42 I'll make my arrows drunk with blood. My sword will devour flesh, along with the blood of the slain, and I'll take their enemy leaders captive.'

42 ‘I will make My arrows drunk with blood,And My sword will devour flesh,With the blood of the slain and the captives,From the heads of the leaders of the enemy.’

43 "Sing for joy, nations! Sing for joy, people who belong to him! For he'll avenge the blood of his servants, turn on his adversary, and cleanse both his land and his people."

43 “Rejoice, O nations, with His people; For He will avenge the blood of His servants,And will render vengeance on His adversaries,And will atone for His land and His people.”

Moses' Final Instructions

45 When Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel,

45 And Moses made an end of speaking all these words to all Israel:

45 After Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel,

45 When Moses had finished addressing all of these words to all Israel,

45 When Moses had finished speaking all these words to all [the people of] Israel,

46 he said to them, “(CO)Take to your heart all the words with which I am warning you today, which you shall command (CP)your sons to observe (r)carefully, even all the words of this law.

46 And he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.

46 he said to them, “Take to heart all these words I am giving as a warning to you today, so that you may command your children to carefully follow all the words of this law.

46 he told them, "Take to heart my entire testimony against you today. Command your children to observe carefully every word of this Law,

46 he said to them, “Take to heart all the words of warning which I am speaking to you today; and you shall command your children to observe them carefully—to do all the words of this law.

47 For it is not an idle word for you; indeed (CQ)it is your life. And (CR)by this word you will prolong your days in the land, (s)which you are about to cross the Jordan to (t)possess.”

47 For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life: and through this thing ye shall prolong your days in the land, whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.

47 For they are not meaningless words to you but they are your life, and by them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

47 because they're not just empty words for you they are your very life. Through these instructions you will live long in the land that you are about to cross over the Jordan River to possess."

47 For it is not an empty or trivial matter for you; indeed it is your [very] life. By [honoring and obeying] this word you will live long in the land, which you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

Instructions Concerning Moses' Death

48 (CS)The Lord spoke to Moses that very same day, saying,

48 And the LORD spake unto Moses that selfsame day, saying,

48 On that same day the Lord spoke to Moses,(Q)

48 Later that day, the LORD told Moses,

48 And the Lord said to Moses that very same day,

49 (CT)Go up to this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab (u)opposite Jericho, and look at the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel for a possession.

49 Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession:

49 “Go up Mount Nebo in the Abarim range in the land of Moab, across from Jericho, and view the land of Canaan I am giving the Israelites as a possession.

49 "Ascend this Abarim mountain range toward Mount Nebo in the land of Moab across from Jericho, and look out over the land of Canaan that I'm about to give to the Israelis as a possession.

49 “Go up to this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab opposite Jericho, and look at the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel as a possession.

50 Then die on the mountain where you ascend, and be (CU)gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people,

50 And die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people:

50 Then you will die on the mountain that you go up, and you will be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people.(R)

50 You will die on the mountain that you are about to ascend and be taken to be with your ancestors, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and was taken to be with his ancestors.

50 Then die on the mountain which you climb, and be gathered to your people [in death], just as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people,

51 (CV)because you broke faith with Me in the midst of the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the (CW)wilderness of Zin, because you did not treat Me as holy in the midst of the sons of Israel.

51 Because ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of MeribahKadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel.

51 For both of you broke faith with Me among the Israelites at the waters of Meribath-kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin by failing to treat Me as holy in their presence.

51 Both of you acted unfaithfully against me among the Israelis at Meribah-kadesh in the desert of Zin, when you failed to uphold my holiness among the Israelis.

51 because you broke faith with Me among of the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the Wilderness of Zin, and because you did not treat Me as holy among of the sons of Israel.(B)

52 (CX)For you shall see the land at a distance, but (CY)you shall not go there, into the land which I am giving the sons of Israel.”

52 Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel.

52 Although from a distance you will view the land that I am giving the Israelites, you will not go there.”(S)

52 You'll see the land from a distance, but you won't be able to enter the land that I am about to give to the Israelis."

52 For you shall see the land opposite you from a distance, but you shall not go there, into the land which I am giving to the children of Israel.”
