Yahweh Rescues Israel At The Red Sea

1 And LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

1 Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses:

1 The LORD told Moses,

2 Speak to the sons of Israel, that they turn back and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, before Baal-zephon. Ye shall encamp opposite it by the sea.

2 “Tell the sons of Israel to turn back and camp before (A)Pi-hahiroth, between (B)Migdol and the sea; you shall camp in front of Baal-zephon, opposite it, by the sea.

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baalzephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea.

2 “Tell the Israelites to turn back and camp in front of Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea; you must camp in front of Baal-zephon, facing it by the sea.(A)

2 "Tell the Israelis that they are to turn back and camp in front of Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea. You are to camp in front of Baal-zephon, opposite it by the sea.

3 And Pharaoh will say of the sons of Israel, They are entangled in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.

3 For Pharaoh will say of the sons of Israel, ‘They are wandering aimlessly in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.’

3 For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in.

3 Pharaoh will say of the Israelites: They are wandering around the land in confusion; the wilderness has boxed them in.

3 Pharaoh will say about the Israelis, "They're wandering aimlessly in the land, and the desert has closed in on them.'

4 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he shall follow after them, and I will get for me honor upon Pharaoh, and upon all his army, and the Egyptians shall know that I am LORD. And they did so.

4 Thus (C)I will (a)harden Pharaoh’s heart, and (D)he will chase after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, and (E)the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” And they did so.

4 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD. And they did so.

4 I will harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will pursue them. Then I will receive glory by means of Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh.” So the Israelites did this.(B)

4 I've made Pharaoh's heart stubborn so he will pursue them. But I'll receive honor by means of Pharaoh and his army, so that the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD." So this is what the Israelis did.

The Egyptian Pursuit

5 And it was told the king of Egypt that the people were fled. And the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was changed towards the people, and they said, What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?

5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, (b)Pharaoh and his servants had a change of heart toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?”

5 And it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?

5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about the people and said: “What have we done? We have released Israel from serving us.”

5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, the minds of Pharaoh and his officials changed toward the people, and they said, "What have we done in releasing Israel from serving us?"

6 And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him.

6 So he made his chariot ready and took his people with him;

6 And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him:

6 So he got his chariot ready and took his troops(a) with him;

6 So Pharaoh had his chariot prepared and took his troops with him.

7 And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over all of them.

7 and he took six hundred select chariots, and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them.

7 And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them.

7 he took 600 of the best chariots and all the rest of the chariots of Egypt, with officers in each one.

7 He took 600 of the best chariots, and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers in charge of each one.

8 And LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the sons of Israel, for the sons of Israel went out with a high hand.

8 (F)The Lord (c)hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he chased after the sons of Israel as the sons of Israel were going out (d)(G)boldly.

8 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel: and the children of Israel went out with an high hand.

8 The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the Israelites, who were going out triumphantly.(b)(C)

8 The LORD made the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, stubborn, and he defiantly pursued the Israelis as they were leaving.

9 And the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses [and] chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baal-zephon.

9 Then (H)the Egyptians chased after them with all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his army, and they overtook them camping by the sea, (I)beside Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.

9 But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon.

9 The Egyptians—all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, his horsemen,(c) and his army—chased(D) after them and caught up with them as they camped by the sea beside Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.

9 The Egyptians pursued them all the chariot-horses of Pharaoh, along with his horsemen and army and they overtook them camped by the sea, near Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal Zephon.

10 And when Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they were very afraid. And the sons of Israel cried out to LORD,

10 As Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel (e)looked, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they became very frightened; (J)so the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord.

10 And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD.

10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up and saw the Egyptians coming after them. Then the Israelites were terrified and cried out(E) to the Lord for help.

10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelis looked up, and there were the Egyptians bearing down on them! Extremely frightened, the Israelis cried out to the LORD.

11 and they said to Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, have thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have thou dealt thus with us, to bring us forth out of Egypt?

11 Then (K)they said to Moses, “Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you dealt with us in this way, (f)bringing us out of Egypt?

11 And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt?

11 They said to Moses: “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you took us to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?

11 They also told Moses, "Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you took us out to die in the desert? What have you done to us, by bringing us out of Egypt?

12 Is not this the word that we spoke to thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it were better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.

12 (L)Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘(g)Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.

12 Isn’t this what we told you in Egypt: Leave us alone so that we may serve the Egyptians? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”(F)

12 Is this not what we told you in Egypt, when we said, "Leave us alone!' and "Let us serve the Egyptians!'? Indeed, it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!"

The Lord Divides The Red Sea

13 And Moses said to the people, Fear ye not. Stand still, and see the salvation of LORD, which he will work for you today, for the Egyptians whom ye have seen today, ye shall see them again no more forever.

13 But Moses said to the people, “(M)Do not fear! (h)Stand by and see (N)the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever.

13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

13 But Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid. Stand firm and see(G) the Lord’s salvation He will provide for you today; for the Egyptians you see today, you will never see again.

13 Moses told the people, "Don't be afraid! Stand still and watch how the LORD will deliver you today, because you will never again see the Egyptians whom you're looking at today.

14 LORD will fight for you, and ye shall keep silent.

14 (O)The Lord will fight for you while (P)you keep silent.”

14 The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

14 The Lord will fight for you; you must be quiet.”(H)

14 The LORD will fight for you while you keep still."

Escape Through The Red Sea

15 And LORD said to Moses, Why do thou cry to me? Speak to the sons of Israel, that they go forward.

15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the sons of Israel to go forward.

15 And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward:

15 The Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the Israelites to break camp.

15 Then the LORD told Moses, "Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelis to move out!

16 And lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thy hand over the sea, and divide it, and the sons of Israel shall go into the midst of the sea on dry ground.

16 As for you, lift up (Q)your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, and the sons of Israel shall (i)go through the midst of the sea on dry land.

16 But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.

16 As for you, lift up your staff, stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground.(I)

16 You are to raise your staff, stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it, so the Israelis may go into the middle of the sea on dry land.

17 And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall go in after them, and I will get for me honor upon Pharaoh, and upon all his army, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

17 As for Me, behold, (R)I will (j)harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen.

17 And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

17 I am going to harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them, and I will receive glory by means of Pharaoh, all his army, and his chariots and horsemen.

17 Even now I'm hardening the heart of the Egyptians so they'll go after the Israelis. Then I'll receive honor by means of Pharaoh and all his army, his chariots, and his horsemen.

18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am LORD, when I have gotten for me honor upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

18 (S)Then the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord, when I am honored through Pharaoh, through his chariots and his horsemen.”

18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

18 The Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh when I receive glory through Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.”

18 Then the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD when I receive honor by means of Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen."

19 And the agent of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them, and stood behind them.

19 (T)The angel of God, who had been going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them.

19 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:

19 Then the Angel of God,(J) who was going in front of the Israelite forces, moved and went behind them. The pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and stood behind them.(K)

19 Then the angel of God, who was going in front of the camp of Israel, moved behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front of them and stood behind them,

20 And it came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel. And the cloud and the darkness was there, yet it gave light by night. And the one did not come near the other all the night.

20 So it came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel; and there was the cloud (k)along with the darkness, yet it gave light at night. Thus the one did not come near the other all night.

20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.

20 It came between the Egyptian and Israelite forces. The cloud was there in the darkness, yet it lit up the night.(d) So neither group came near the other all night long.

20 coming between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. The cloud remained there even in the darkness, illuminating the night, so that the one side did not come near the other all night.

21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and LORD caused the sea to go [back] by a strong east wind all the night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.

21 (U)Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord (l)swept the sea back by a strong east wind all night and turned the sea into (V)dry land, so (W)the waters were divided.

21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.

21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lord drove the sea back with a powerful east wind all that night and turned the sea into dry land. So the waters were divided,(L)

21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the LORD caused the water to retreat by a strong east wind all night, turning the sea into dry land. As the waters were divided,

22 And the sons of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand, and on their left.

22 (X)The sons of Israel (m)went through the midst of the sea on the dry land, and (Y)the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

22 and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with the waters like a wall to them on their right and their left.(M)

22 the Israelis went into the middle of the sea on dry land, and the waters formed a wall for them on their right and on their left.

23 And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

23 Then (Z)the Egyptians took up the pursuit, and all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots and his horsemen went in after them into the midst of the sea.

23 And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

23 The Egyptians set out in pursuit—all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen—and went into the sea after them.

23 The Egyptians pursued all the horses of Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen and they went into the middle of the sea after them.

24 And it came to pass in the morning watch, that LORD looked forth upon the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of cloud, and troubled the army of the Egyptians.

24 At the morning watch, (AA)the Lord looked down on the (n)army of the Egyptians (o)through the pillar of fire and cloud and brought the (p)army of the Egyptians into confusion.

24 And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,

24 Then during the morning watch, the Lord looked down on the Egyptian forces from the pillar of fire(N) and cloud, and threw them into confusion.

24 In the morning watch, the LORD looked down on the Egyptian camp through the pillar of fire and cloud, and he threw the Egyptian camp into confusion.

25 And he took off their chariot wheels, and they drove them with difficulty, so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel, for LORD fights for them against the Egyptians.

25 He (q)caused their chariot wheels to swerve, and He made them drive with difficulty; so the Egyptians said, “Let (r)us flee from Israel, (AB)for the Lord is fighting for them against the Egyptians.”

25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians.

25 He caused their chariot wheels to swerve(e)(f) and made them drive(g) with difficulty. “Let’s get away from Israel,” the Egyptians said, “because Yahweh is fighting for them against Egypt!”

25 He made the wheels of their chariots wobble so that they drove them with difficulty. The Egyptians said, "Let's flee from Israel because the LORD is fighting for them and against us."

26 And LORD said to Moses, Stretch out thy hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.

26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “(AC)Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may come back over the Egyptians, over their chariots and their horsemen.”

26 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.

26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may come back on the Egyptians, on their chariots and horsemen.”

26 Then the LORD told Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea and the water will come back over the Egyptians, over their chariots, and over their horsemen."

27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its strength when the morning appeared, and the Egyptians fled against it, and LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and (AD)the sea returned to its normal state at daybreak, while the Egyptians were fleeing (s)right into it; then the Lord (t)(AE)overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea returned to its normal depth. While the Egyptians were trying to escape from it, the Lord threw them into the sea.(O)

27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the water returned to its normal depth at daybreak. The Egyptians tried to retreat in front of the advancing water, but the LORD destroyed the Egyptians in the middle of the sea.

28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, even all the army of Pharaoh who went in after them into the sea, there remained not so much as one of them.

28 The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, (u)even Pharaoh’s entire army that had gone into the sea after them; (AF)not even one of them remained.

28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.

28 The waters came back and covered the chariots(P) and horsemen, the entire army of Pharaoh, that had gone after them into the sea. None of them survived.

28 The water returned, covering the chariots and the horsemen of Pharaoh's entire army that had pursued the Israelis into the sea. Not a single one of them remained.

29 But the sons of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand, and on their left.

29 But the sons of Israel walked on (AG)dry land through the midst of the sea, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

29 But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

29 But the Israelites had walked through the sea on dry ground, with the waters like a wall to them on their right and their left.

29 But the Israelis walked through the middle of the sea on dry land, and the water stood like a wall for them on their right and on their left.

30 Thus LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea-shore.

30 (AH)Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel (AI)saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.

30 Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore.

30 That day the Lord saved Israel from the power of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.

30 On that day the LORD delivered Israel from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead along the seashore.

31 And Israel saw the great work which LORD did upon the Egyptians. And the people feared LORD, and they believed in LORD, and in his servant Moses.

31 When Israel saw the great (v)power which the Lord had (w)used against the Egyptians, the people (x)feared the Lord, and (AJ)they believed in the Lord and in His servant Moses.

31 And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.

31 When Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and believed(Q) in Him and in His servant Moses.

31 When Israel saw the great force by which the LORD had acted against the Egyptians, the people feared the LORD, and they believed the LORD and Moses his servant.
