Water From The Rock

1 And the children of Israel went on from the waste land of Sin, by stages as the Lord gave them orders, and put up their tents in Rephidim: and there was no drinking-water for the people.

1 Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed by (a)stages from the wilderness of (A)Sin, according to the (b)command of the Lord, and camped at (B)Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink.

1 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

1 The entire Israelite community left the Wilderness of Sin, moving from one place to the next according to the Lord’s command. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.(A)

1 The whole congregation of the Israelis set out from the desert of Sin, traveling from place to place according to the command of the LORD. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.

2 So the people were angry with Moses, and said, Give us water for drinking. And Moses said, Why are you angry with me? and why do you put God to the test?

2 Therefore the people (C)quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water that we may drink.” And Moses said to them, “(D)Why do you quarrel with me? (E)Why do you test the Lord?”

2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?

2 So the people complained to Moses, “Give us water to drink.”“Why are you complaining to me?” Moses replied to them. “Why are you testing(B) the Lord?”

2 The people quarreled with Moses: "Give us water to drink." Moses told them, "Why are you quarreling with me? Why are you testing the LORD?"

3 And the people were in great need of water; and they made an outcry against Moses, and said, Why have you taken us out of Egypt to send death on us and our children and our cattle through need of water?

3 But the people thirsted there for water; and (c)they (F)grumbled against Moses and said, “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill (d)us and (e)our children and (f)(G)our livestock with thirst?”

3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

3 But the people thirsted there for water, and grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you ever bring us out of Egypt to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”(C)

3 But the people were thirsty there for water, so they complained against Moses: "Why did you bring us up from Egypt to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?"

4 And Moses, crying out to the Lord, said, What am I to do to this people? they are almost ready to put me to death by stoning.

4 So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, “What shall I do to this people? A (H)little more and they will stone me.”

4 And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

4 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What should I do with these people? In a little while they will stone me!”(D)

4 So Moses cried out to the LORD: "What am I to do with these people? Just a little more and they'll stone me."

5 And the Lord said to Moses, Go on before the people, and take some of the chiefs of Israel with you, and take in your hand the rod which was stretched out over the Nile, and go.

5 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of (I)the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which (J)you struck the Nile, and go.

5 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

5 The Lord answered Moses, “Go on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take the staff you struck the Nile with in your hand and go.

5 Then the LORD told Moses, "Go over in front of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.

6 See, I will take my place before you on the rock in Horeb; and when you give the rock a blow, water will come out of it, and the people will have drink. And Moses did so before the eyes of the chiefs of Israel.

6 Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at (K)Horeb; and (L)you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

6 I am going to stand there in front of you on the rock at Horeb; when you hit the rock, water(E) will come out of it and the people will drink.” Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.

6 I'll be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. You are to strike the rock and water will come out of it, so the people can drink." Moses did this in front of the elders of Israel.

7 And he gave that place the name Massah and Meribah, because the children of Israel were angry, and because they put the Lord to the test, saying, Is the Lord with us or not?

7 He named the place (g)(M)Massah and (h)(N)Meribah because of the quarrel of the sons of Israel, and because they (O)tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us, or not?”

7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

7 He named the place Massah(a) and Meribah(b)(F) because the Israelites complained, and because they tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

7 He named the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelis quarreled and tested the LORD by saying: "Is the LORD really among us or not?"

Battle With The Amalekites

8 Then Amalek came and made war on Israel in Rephidim.

8 Then (P)Amalek came and fought against Israel at (Q)Rephidim.

8 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

8 At Rephidim, Amalek(c)(G) came and fought against Israel.

8 After this, the Amalekites came and fought with the Israelis at Rephidim.

9 And Moses said to Joshua, Get together a band of men for us and go out, make war on Amalek: tomorrow I will take my place on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.

9 So Moses said to (R)Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with (S)the staff of God in my hand.”

9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

9 Moses said to Joshua,(H) “Select some men for us and go fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the hilltop with God’s staff in my hand.”

9 Moses told Joshua, "Choose some men for us and go out to fight against the Amalekites. Tomorrow I'll stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand."

10 So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and went to war with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

10 Joshua did as Moses (i)told him, (j)and fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and (T)Hur went up to the top of the hill.

10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

10 Joshua did as Moses had told him, and fought against Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

10 So Joshua did as Moses told him and fought against the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

11 Now while Moses' hand was lifted up, Israel was the stronger: but when he let his hand go down, Amalek became the stronger.

11 So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand (k)down, Amalek prevailed.

11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

11 While Moses held up his hand,(d) Israel prevailed, but whenever he put his hand(e) down, Amalek prevailed.(I)

11 Whenever Moses raised his hand, the Israelis prevailed, but when his hand remained at his side, then the Amalekites prevailed.

12 But Moses' hands became tired; so they put a stone under him and he took his seat on it, Aaron and Hur supporting his hands, one on one side and one on the other; so his hands were kept up without falling till the sun went down.

12 But Moses’ hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur (U)supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set.

12 But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

12 When Moses’ hands grew heavy, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat down on it. Then Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other so that his hands remained steady until the sun went down.

12 When Moses' hands became heavy, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other, and so his hands were steady until the sun went down.

13 And Joshua overcame Amalek and his people with the sword.

13 So Joshua (l)overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

13 So Joshua defeated Amalek and his army(f) with the sword.

13 Joshua defeated Amalek and his army using swords.

14 And the Lord said to Moses, Make a record of this in a book, so that it may be kept in memory, and say it again in the ears of Joshua: that all memory of Amalek is to be completely uprooted from the earth.

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “(V)Write this in (m)a book as a memorial and (n)recite it to Joshua, (o)that (W)I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.”

14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

14 The Lord then said to Moses, “Write this down on a scroll as a reminder and recite it to Joshua: I will completely blot out the memory of Amalek under heaven.”(J)

14 Then the LORD told Moses, "Write this in a book as a memorial and recite it to Joshua: "I'll certainly wipe out the memory of the Amalekites from under heaven.'"

15 Then Moses put up an altar and gave it the name of Yahweh-nissi:

15 Moses built an (X)altar and named it (Y)The Lord is My Banner;

15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:

15 And Moses built an altar(K) and named it, “The Lord Is My Banner.”(g)

15 Moses built an altar and named it "The LORD is My Banner."

16 For he said, The Lord has taken his oath that there will be war with Amalek from generation to generation.

16 and he said, “(p)(Z)The Lord has sworn; the Lord will have war against Amalek from generation to generation.”

16 For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

16 He said, “Indeed, my hand is lifted up toward(h) the Lord’s throne. The Lord will be at war with Amalek from generation to generation.”

16 "Because," he said, "a fist has been raised in defiance against the throne of the LORD, the LORD will wage war against Amalek from generation to generation."
