3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a (d)(C)wicker (e)basket and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and set it among the (D)reeds by the bank of the Nile.

3 And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink.

3 But when she could no longer hide him, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with asphalt and pitch. She placed the child in it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile.

4 (E)His sister stood at a distance to (f)find out what would (g)happen to him.

4 Then his sister(C) stood at a distance in order to see what would happen to him.

4 Then his sister positioned herself some distance away in order to find out what would happen to him.

6 And when she had opened it she saw the child, and behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on it and said, "It is one of the Hebrew's children."

6 When she opened it, she (i)saw the child, and behold, the (j)boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”

6 And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children.

6 When she opened it, she saw the child—a little boy, crying. She felt sorry for him and said, “This is one of the Hebrew boys.”

6 When she opened it and saw the child, the little boy suddenly began crying. Filled with compassion for him, she exclaimed, "This is one of the Hebrew children!"

7 Then said his sister unto Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and call unto thee a nurse of the Hebrew's women, to nurse the child?"

7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call (k)a nurse for you from the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for you?”

7 Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?

7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a woman from the Hebrews to nurse the boy for you?”

7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and call one of the nursing Hebrew women so she can nurse the child for you?"

8 And the maid ran and called the child's mother.

8 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go ahead.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother.

8 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child's mother.

8 “Go,” Pharaoh’s daughter told her. So the girl went and called the boy’s mother.

Moses In Midian

11 And it happened in these days when Moses was waxed great, that he went out unto his brethren and looked on their burdens, and spied an Egyptian smiting one of his brethren, an Hebrew.

11 Now it came about in those days, (H)when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his brethren and looked on their (n)(I)hard labors; and (J)he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren.

11 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.

11 Years later,(c) after Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people(d) and observed their forced labor.(D) He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people.

11 Years later, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people, and took notice of their heavy burdens. He saw an Egyptian beating up a Hebrew, one of his own people.

12 And he looked round about: and when he saw that there was no man by, he slew the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

12 So he (o)looked this way and that, and when he saw there was no one around, he (K)struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.

12 Looking all around and seeing no one, he struck the Egyptian dead and hid him in the sand.

12 Looking around and seeing no one else, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

13 And he went out another day: and behold, two Hebrews strove together. And he said unto him that did the wrong, "Wherefore smitest thou thine neighbor?"

13 He went out (L)the next day, and behold, two Hebrews were (p)fighting with each other; and he said to the (q)offender, “Why are you striking your companion?”

13 And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?

13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you attacking your neighbor?”(e)

13 Going out the next day, Moses noticed two Hebrew men fighting right in front of him. He told the one who was at fault, "Why did you strike your companion?"

14 And he answered, "Who hath made thee a ruler or a judge over us? Intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian?" Then Moses feared and said, "Of a surety the thing is known."

14 But he said, “(M)Who made you a (r)prince or a judge over us? Are you (s)intending to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and said, “Surely the matter has become known.”

14 And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.

14 “Who made you a leader and judge over us?” the man replied. “Are you planning to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?”Then Moses became afraid and thought: What I did is certainly known.

14 The man replied, "Who appointed you to be an official judge over us? Are you planning to kill me like you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses became terrified and told himself, "Certainly this event has become known!"

15 And Pharaoh heard of it and went about to slay Moses: but he fled from Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well's side.

15 When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he tried to kill Moses. But (N)Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh and (t)settled in the land of Midian, and he sat down (O)by a well.

15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.

15 When Pharaoh heard about this, he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in the land of Midian,(E) and sat down by a well.(F)

15 When Pharaoh heard about this matter, he tried to kill Moses. So Moses fled from Pharaoh, settled in the land of Midian, and sat down by a well.

16 Now (P)the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and (Q)they came to draw water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.

16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.

16 Now the priest of Midian(G) had seven daughters. They came to draw water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.

16 Meanwhile, the seven daughters of a certain Midianite priest would come to draw water in order to fill water troughs for their father's sheep.

17 And the shepherds came and drove them away: But Moses stood up and helped them and watered their sheep.

17 Then the shepherds came and drove them away, but (R)Moses stood up and helped them and watered their flock.

17 And the shepherds came and drove them away: but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.

17 Then some shepherds arrived and drove them away, but Moses came to their rescue and watered their flock.

17 Some shepherds came to drive them away, but Moses got up, came to their rescue, and watered their sheep.

18 And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, "How happeneth it that ye are come so soon today?"

18 When they came to (S)Reuel their father, he said, “Why have you come back so soon today?”

18 And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come so soon to day?

18 When they returned to their father Reuel(f)(H) he asked, “Why have you come back so quickly today?”

18 When they returned to their father Reuel, he asked, "Why have you returned so quickly today?"

19 And they answered, "There was an Egyptian that delivered us from the shepherds, and so drew us water and watered the sheep."

19 So they said, “An Egyptian delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and what is more, he even drew the water for us and watered the flock.”

19 And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.

19 They answered, “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock.”

19 "An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds," they replied, "and he even drew water for us and watered the sheep!"

20 And he said unto his daughters, "Where is he? Why have ye left the man? Go call him that he may eat bread."

20 He said to his daughters, “Where is he then? Why is it that you have left the man behind? Invite him (u)to have something to eat.”

20 And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.

20 “So where is he?” he asked his daughters. “Why then did you leave the man behind? Invite him to eat dinner.”

20 "Then where is he?" He asked his daughters. "Why did you leave the man behind? Go invite him to have something to eat."

21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man. And he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter which bare a son,

21 (T)Moses was willing to dwell with the man, and he gave his daughter (U)Zipporah to Moses.

21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.

21 Moses agreed to stay with the man, and he gave his daughter Zipporah(I) to Moses in marriage.

21 Moses agreed to stay with the man, and he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage.

22 and he called him Gershom: for he said, "I have been a stranger in a strange land." And she bare yet another son, whom he called Eliezer saying, "The God of my father is mine helper, and hath rid me out of the hands of Pharaoh."

22 Then she gave birth to (V)a son, and he named him (v)Gershom, for he said, “I have been (W)a (w)sojourner in a foreign land.”

22 And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.

22 She gave birth to a son whom he named Gershom, for he said, “I have been a foreigner(J) in a foreign land.”(g)

22 Later she gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, because he used to say, "I became an alien in a foreign land."

God Hears Israel's Groaning

23 And it chanced, in process of time, that the king of Egypt died; and the children of Israel sighed by the reason of labour, and cried.

23 Now it came about in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel (X)sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out; and (Y)their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God.

23 And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.

23 After a long time, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned because of their difficult labor, and they cried out;(K) and their cry for help ascended to God because of the difficult labor.

23 The king of Egypt eventually died, and the Israelis groaned because of the bondage. They cried out, and their cry for deliverance from slavery ascended to God.

24 And their complaint came up unto God from the labour. And God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

24 So (Z)God heard their groaning; and God remembered (AA)His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

24 So God heard their groaning, and He remembered(L) His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.(M)

24 God heard their groaning and remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

25 And God looked upon the children of Israel and knew them.

25 (AB)God saw the sons of Israel, and God (x)took notice of them.

25 And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them.

25 God saw the Israelites, and He took notice.(N)

25 God watched the Israelis and took notice of them.
