Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee:
You shall make no covenant with them or with their gods.
and when the Lord your God delivers them before you and you
defeat them, then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them and show no favor to them.
and as for you,
you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed Me; what is this you have done?
You shall consume all the peoples whom the Lord your God will deliver to you;
your eye shall not pity them, nor shall you serve their gods, for that would be a snare to you.
For if you ever go back and
cling to the rest of these nations, these which remain among you, and intermarry with them, so that you associate with them and they with you,
Therefore I also said, ‘
I will not drive them out before you; but they will become as thorns in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you.’”
Gideon made it into
an ephod, and placed it in his city, Ophrah, and all Israel played the harlot with it there, so that it became a snare to Gideon and his household.
And served their idols, Which became a snare to them.
then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and
destroy all their figured stones, and destroy all their molten images and demolish all their high places;
