God's Just Treatment Of Individuals, Both Righteous And Wicked

1 The word of the Lord came to me:

1 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

1 The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying,

1 The word of the Lord came to me:

1 This message came to me from the LORD:

2 "What do you mean by quoting this proverb concerning the land of Israel, "'The fathers eat sour grapes And the children's teeth become numb?'

2 (A)What do you mean by using this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying,(B)The fathers eat the sour grapes,But the children’s teeth (a)are set on edge’?

2 What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?

2 “What do you mean by using this proverb concerning the land of Israel:The fathers eat sour grapes,(A)and the children’s teeth are set on edge?(B)

2 "Why do you cite this proverb when you talk about Israel's land: "The fathers eat sour grapes but it's their children's teeth that have become numb.'

3 "As surely as I live, declares the sovereign Lord, you will not quote this proverb in Israel anymore!

3 As I live,” declares the Lord (b)God, “you are surely not going to use this proverb in Israel anymore.

3 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.

3 As I live”—this is the declaration of the Lord God—“you will no longer use this proverb in Israel.(C)

3 As long as I live," declares the LORD, "you won't use this proverb about Israel anymore.

4 Indeed! All lives are mine -- the life of the father as well as the life of the son is mine. The one who sins will die.

4 Behold, (C)all (c)souls are Mine; the (d)soul of the father as well as the (e)soul of the son is Mine. The (f)soul who (D)sins will die.

4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

4 Look, every life belongs to Me.(D) The life of the father is like the life of the son—both belong to Me. The person who sins is the one who will die.(E)

4 Look! Every living soul belongs to me the father's as well as the son's. So pay attention! The person who keeps on sinning is going to die."

5 "Suppose a man is righteous. He practices what is just and right,

5 “But if a man is righteous and practices justice and righteousness,

5 But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,

5 “Now suppose a man is righteous and does what is just and right:

5 "If a person is righteous, and practices what's lawful and right,

6 does not eat pagan sacrifices on the mountains or pray to the idols of the house of Israel, does not defile his neighbor's wife, does not have sexual relations with a woman during her period,

6 and does not (E)eat at the mountain shrines or (F)lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, or (G)defile his neighbor’s wife or approach a woman during her menstrual period—

6 And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,

6 He does not eat at the mountain shrines(F) or raise his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife(G) or come near a woman during her menstrual impurity.(H)

6 if he doesn't eat at mountain shrines, and doesn't look to the idols that have been erected in Israel's house, if he doesn't defile his neighbor's wife or approach a woman during her time of menstrual separation,

7 does not oppress anyone, but gives the debtor back whatever was given in pledge, does not commit robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and clothes the naked,

7 if a man does not oppress anyone, but (H)restores to the debtor his pledge, (I)does not commit robbery, but (J)gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing,

7 And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;

7 He doesn’t oppress anyone(I) but returns his collateral to the debtor.(J) He does not commit robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry(K) and covers the naked with clothing.

7 if he doesn't oppress anyone, but instead returns the debtor's security for his debt, if he doesn't rob anyone, but instead shares his food with the hungry and gives clothes to those who are naked,

8 does not engage in usury or charge interest, but refrains from wrongdoing, promotes true justice between men,

8 if he does not lend money on (K)interest or take (L)increase, if he keeps his hand from iniquity and (M)executes true justice between man and man,

8 He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,

8 He doesn’t lend at interest or for profit(L) but keeps his hand from wrongdoing and carries out true justice between men.(M)

8 if he doesn't lend with usury or exact interest, but instead refuses to participate in what is unjust, if he administers true justice between people,

9 and follows my statutes and observes my regulations by carrying them out. That man is righteous; he will certainly live, declares the sovereign Lord.

9 if he walks in (N)My statutes and My ordinances so as to deal faithfully—(O)he is righteous and will surely (P)live,” declares the Lord God.

9 Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.

9 He follows My statutes and keeps My ordinances, acting faithfully. Such a person is righteous; he will certainly live.”(N) This is the declaration of the Lord God.

9 if he lives his life consistent with my statutes and keeps my ordinances by practicing what's true, then he's righteous and will certainly live," declares the Lord GOD.

10 "Suppose such a man has a violent son who sheds blood and does any of these things mentioned previously

10 “Then he may (g)have a violent son who sheds blood and who does any of these things to a brother

10 If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,

10 “Now suppose the man has a violent son, who sheds blood(O) and does any of these things,

10 "Now suppose that person produces a son who's violent, a murderer, and practices any of these things,

11 (though the father did not do any of them). He eats pagan sacrifices on the mountains, defiles his neighbor's wife,

11 (though he himself did not do any of these things), that is, he even eats at the mountain shrines, and (Q)defiles his neighbor’s wife,

11 And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour's wife,

11 though the father has done none of them. Indeed, when the son eats at the mountain shrines and defiles his neighbor’s wife,

11 even though the father hasn't done any of these things. The son who eats at mountain shrines, defiles his neighbor's wife,

12 oppresses the poor and the needy, commits robbery, does not give back what was given in pledge, prays to idols, performs abominable acts,

12 oppresses the (R)poor and needy, (S)commits robbery, does not restore a pledge, but lifts up his eyes to the idols and (T)commits abomination,

12 Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,

12 and when he oppresses the poor and needy, commits robbery, and does not return collateral, and when he raises his eyes to the idols, commits detestable acts,(P)

12 oppresses the afflicted and the poor, robs others, doesn't return security for a debt, looks to idols, does detestable things,

13 engages in usury and charges interest. Will he live? He will not! Because he has done all these abominable deeds he will certainly die. He will bear the responsibility for his own death.

13 he (U)lends money on interest and takes increase; will he live? He will not live! He has committed all these abominations, he will surely be put to death; his (V)blood will be (h)on his own head.

13 Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.

13 and lends at interest or for profit, will he live? He will not live! Since he has committed all these detestable acts, he will certainly die. His blood will be on him.(Q)

13 loans with usury, and exacts interest; will he live? He certainly will not! He has done all these detestable practices. He will certainly die, and his guilt will be his own fault."

14 "But suppose he in turn has a son who notices all the sins his father commits, considers them, and does not follow his father's example.

14 “Now behold, he (i)has a son who has observed all his father’s sins which he committed, and (W)observing does not do likewise.

14 Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father's sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like,

14 “Now suppose he has a son who sees all the sins his father has committed, and though he sees them, he does not do likewise.

14 "Now suppose that he produced a son who practiced all of his father's sins, but then that son began to fear me and stopped doing all of these things.

15 He does not eat pagan sacrifices on the mountains, does not pray to the idols of the house of Israel, does not defile his neighbor's wife,

15 He does not eat at the mountain shrines or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, or defile his neighbor’s wife,

15 That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour's wife,

15 He does not eat at the mountain shrines or raise his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife.

15 That is, suppose he doesn't eat at the mountain shrines, doesn't look to the idols of Israel's house, doesn't defile his neighbor's wife,

16 does not oppress anyone or keep what has been given in pledge, does not commit robbery, gives his food to the hungry, and clothes the naked,

16 or oppress anyone, or retain a pledge, or commit robbery, but he (X)gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing,

16 Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,

16 He doesn’t oppress anyone, hold collateral, or commit robbery. He gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing.

16 doesn't oppress anyone, doesn't take possession of a debtor's pledge, or doesn't steal, but instead shares his food with the hungry, gives clothes to those who are naked,

17 refrains from wrongdoing, does not engage in usury or charge interest, carries out my regulations and follows my statutes. He will not die for his father's iniquity; he will surely live.

17 he keeps his hand from (j)the poor, does not take interest or increase, but executes My ordinances, and walks in My statutes; (Y)he will not die for his father’s iniquity, he will surely live.

17 That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.

17 He keeps his hand from harming the poor, not taking interest or profit on a loan. He practices My ordinances and follows My statutes. Such a person will not die for his father’s iniquity. He will certainly live.

17 doesn't refuse to help the afflicted, or refuses to loan with usury or exact interest, but instead follows my ordinances and lives his life consistent with my statutes. He won't die because of his father's sin, will he? No! He'll certainly live.

18 As for his father, because he practices extortion, robs his brother, and does what is not good among his people, he will die for his iniquity.

18 As for his father, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was not good among his people, behold, he will die for his iniquity.

18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.

18 “As for his father, he will die for his own iniquity because he practiced fraud, robbed his brother, and did what was wrong among his people.(R)

18 As for his father, watch out! If he wrongfully oppressed or robbed his brother and did what wasn't good among his people, he'll die because of his own sin."

19 "Yet you say, 'Why should the son not suffer for his father's iniquity?' When the son does what is just and right, and observes all my statutes and carries them out, he will surely live.

19 “Yet you say, ‘(Z)Why should the son not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity?’ When the son has practiced (AA)justice and righteousness and has observed all My statutes and done them, he shall surely live.

19 Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.

19 But you may ask, ‘Why doesn’t the son suffer punishment for the father’s iniquity?’(S) Since the son has done what is just and right, carefully observing all My statutes, he will certainly live.

19 "Yet you keep asking, "Why wouldn't the son bear the punishment of his father's sin?' Because the son has done what was lawful and right, and has kept all my statutes and obeyed them, he's certainly going to live.

20 The person who sins is the one who will die. A son will not suffer for his father's iniquity, and a father will not suffer for his son's iniquity; the righteous person will be judged according to his righteousness, and the wicked person according to his wickedness.

20 The person who (AB)sins will die. The (AC)son will not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son’s iniquity; the (AD)righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself.

20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

20 The person who sins is the one who will die.(T) A son won’t suffer punishment for the father’s iniquity, and a father won’t suffer punishment for the son’s iniquity.(U) The righteousness of the righteous person will be on him,(V) and the wickedness of the wicked person will be on him.(W)

20 The soul who sins dies. The son won't bear the punishment of his father's sin and the father won't bear the punishment of his son's sin. The righteous deeds of that righteous person will be attributed to him, while the wicked deeds of the wicked person will be charged against him.

21 "But if the wicked person turns from all the sin he has committed and observes all my statutes and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die.

21 “But if the (AE)wicked man turns from all his sins which he has committed and observes all My statutes and practices justice and righteousness, he shall surely live; he shall not die.

21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

21 “Now if the wicked person turns from all the sins he has committed,(X) keeps all My statutes, and does what is just and right, he will certainly live; he will not die.

21 But if the wicked person turns from all his sins, which he did and keeps my statutes, then he'll live. He won't die.

22 None of the sins he has committed will be held against him; because of the righteousness he has done, he will live.

22 (AF)All his transgressions which he has committed will not be remembered against him; because of his (AG)righteousness which he has practiced, he will live.

22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.

22 None of the transgressions he has committed will be held against him.(Y) He will live because of the righteousness he has practiced.(Z)

22 None of the transgressions that he had committed will be held against him. Because of the righteous deeds that he had done, he'll live.

23 Do I actually delight in the death of the wicked, declares the sovereign Lord? Do I not prefer that he turn from his wicked conduct and live?

23 (AH)Do I have any pleasure in the death of the wicked,” declares the Lord God, “(k)rather than that he should (AI)turn from his ways and live?

23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked?”(AA) This is the declaration of the Lord God. “Instead, don’t I take pleasure when he turns from his ways and lives?

23 "I don't take delight in the death of the wicked, do I?" asks the Lord GOD. "Shouldn't I rather delight when he turns from his wicked ways and lives?

24 "But if a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and practices wrongdoing according to all the abominable practices the wicked carry out, will he live? All his righteous acts will not be remembered; because of the unfaithful acts he has done and the sin he has committed, he will die.

24 “But when a righteous man (AJ)turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity and does according to all the abominations that a wicked man does, will he live? (AK)All his righteous deeds which he has done will not be remembered for his (AL)treachery which he has committed and his sin which he has committed; for them he will die.

24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.

24 But when a righteous person turns from his righteousness(AB) and practices iniquity, committing the same detestable acts that the wicked do, will he live? None of the righteous acts he did will be remembered.(AC) He will die because of the treachery he has engaged in and the sin he has committed.

24 But when the righteous person abandons his righteous deeds and commits evil, detestable practices, as wicked people do, he won't live, will he? None of the righteous acts that he had done will be remembered. He'll die in his treacherous unfaithfulness and sins that he had committed."

25 "Yet you say, 'The Lord's conduct is unjust!' Hear, O house of Israel: Is my conduct unjust? Is it not your conduct that is unjust?

25 Yet you say, ‘(AM)The way of the Lord is not right.’ Hear now, O house of Israel! Is (AN)My way not right? Is it not your ways that are not right?

25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?

25 “But you say, ‘The Lord’s way isn’t fair.’(AD) Now listen, house of Israel: Is it My way that is unfair? Instead, isn’t it your ways that are unfair?

25 "Yet you keep saying, "The LORD isn't being consistent with his standards.' Pay attention, you house of Israel: Is my behavior really inconsistent with my standards? Isn't it your behavior that isn't just?

26 When a righteous person turns back from his righteousness and practices wrongdoing, he will die for it; because of the wrongdoing he has done, he will die.

26 When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity and dies because of it, for his iniquity which he has committed he will die.

26 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.

26 When a righteous person turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, he will die for this. He will die because of the iniquity he has practiced.

26 "When a righteous person turns from his righteous deeds and does evil, he'll die because of that evil. He'll die because of his unrighteous acts that he committed.

27 When a wicked person turns from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will preserve his life.

27 Again, when a wicked man turns away (AO)from his wickedness which he has committed and practices justice and righteousness, he will save his life.

27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.

27 But if a wicked person turns from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will preserve his life.

27 When a wicked person quits his wicked behavior and does what's just and right, he'll be enabled to live.

28 Because he considered and turned from all the sins he had done, he will surely live; he will not die.

28 Because he considered and turned away from all his transgressions which he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die.

28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

28 He will certainly live because he thought it over and turned from all the transgressions he had committed; he will not die.

28 Because he reconsidered his transgression and turned away from everything that he had been doing, he'll certainly live and not die.

29 Yet the house of Israel says, 'The Lord's conduct is unjust!' Is my conduct unjust, O house of Israel? Is it not your conduct that is unjust?

29 But the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not right.’ Are My ways not right, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not right?

29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?

29 But the house of Israel says, ‘The Lord’s way isn’t fair.’ Is it My ways that are unfair, house of Israel? Instead, isn’t it your ways that are unfair?

29 Yet Israel's house keeps saying, "The LORD isn't being consistent with his standards.' Is it my behavior that's inconsistent with my standards? Is it not your behavior that's inconsistent with my standards?"

30 "Therefore I will judge each person according to his conduct, O house of Israel, declares the sovereign Lord. Repent and turn from all your wickedness; then it will not be an obstacle leading to iniquity.

30 “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each according to his conduct,” declares the Lord God. “(AP)Repent and turn away from all your transgressions, so that iniquity may not become a stumbling block to you.

30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

30 “Therefore, house of Israel, I will judge each one of you according to his ways.”(AE) This is the declaration of the Lord God. “Repent and turn from all your transgressions, so they will not be a stumbling block that causes your punishment.

30 "Therefore, Israel, I'm going to judge you according to the behavior of each and every one of you," declares the Lord GOD. "So repent and turn from all your sins so that sin won't keep on being a stumbling block for you.

31 Throw away all your sins you have committed and fashion yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why should you die, O house of Israel?

31 (AQ)Cast away from you all your transgressions which you have committed and make yourselves a (AR)new heart and a new spirit! For why will you die, O house of Israel?

31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

31 Throw off all the transgressions you have committed, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit.(AF) Why should you die, house of Israel?

31 Stop your transgressing the deeds by which you've rebelled and then make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, you house of Israel?

32 For I take no delight in the death of anyone, declares the sovereign Lord. Repent and live!

32 For I have (AS)no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies,” declares the Lord God. “Therefore, repent and live.”

32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.

32 For I take no pleasure in anyone’s death.” This is the declaration of the Lord God. “So repent and live!

32 I don't take pleasure in the death of anyone who dies," declares the LORD. "So repent, so you may live!"
