The Boiling Pot And The Death Of Ezekiel's Wife

1 In the ninth year, in the tenth month, and on the tenth day of the month, this message came to me from the LORD:

1 And the word of the Lord came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth of the month, saying,

1 Again in the ninth year, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

1 The word of the Lord came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month:

1 Again in the ninth year [of King Jehoiachin’s captivity by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon], in the tenth month, on the tenth [day] of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

2 "Son of Man, write down the name of this day, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem on this very day.

2 “Son of man, write the name of the day, this very day. The king of Babylon (a)has (A)laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.

2 Son of man, write thee the name of the day, even of this same day: the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day.

2 “Son of man, write down today’s date, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.(A)

2 “Son of man, record the name of the day, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.

3 So compose a parable for the rebellious house. Tell them, "This is what the Lord God says: "Prepare your pot for boiling! Set it in place. Fill it up with water, too.

3 Speak a (B)parable to the (C)rebellious house and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord (b)God,“Put on the (D)pot, put it on and also pour water in it;

3 And utter a parable unto the rebellious house, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Set on a pot, set it on, and also pour water into it:

3 Now speak a parable(B) to the rebellious house. Tell them: This is what the Lord God says:Put the pot(C) on the fire—put it on,and then pour water into it!

3 Speak a parable against the rebellious house [of Judah] and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God,“Put on a pot; put it on and also pour water into it;

4 Gather together the best pieces of meat on it including the thighs and the shoulders and fill it with the choicest bones.

4 (c)(E)Put in it the pieces,Every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder;Fill it with choice bones.

4 Gather the pieces thereof into it, even every good piece, the thigh, and the shoulder; fill it with the choice bones.

4 Place the pieces of meat in it,every good piece—thigh and shoulder.Fill it with choice bones.

4 “Put in it the pieces [of meat],Every good piece (the people of Jerusalem), the thigh and the shoulder;Fill it with choice bones.

5 Take the best bones from the flock, pile wood under the pot for the bones, bring it to a boil, and then cook the bones in it."'"

5 “Take the (F)choicest of the flock,And also pile (d)wood under (e)the pot.Make it boil vigorously. Also seethe its bones in it.”

5 Take the choice of the flock, and burn also the bones under it, and make it boil well, and let them seethe the bones of it therein.

5 Take the choicest of the flockand also pile up the fuel(a) under it.Bring it to a boiland cook the bones in it.”

5 “Take the choicest of the flock,And also pile wood under the pot.Make it boil vigorouslyAnd boil its bones in the pot.”

6 "This is what the Lord GOD says: "How terrible it is for that blood-filled city, to the pot whose rust remains in it, whose rust won't come off. Empty it one piece at a time. Don't let a lot fall on it.

6 ‘Therefore, thus says the Lord God,“Woe to the (G)bloody city,To the pot in which there is rustAnd whose rust has not gone out of it!Take out of it piece after piece,(f)Without making a choice.

6 Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum is therein, and whose scum is not gone out of it! bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall upon it.

6 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:Woe to the city of bloodshed,(D)the pot that has rust inside it,and whose rust will not come off!Empty it piece by piece;lots should not be cast for its contents.

6 ‘Therefore, thus says the Lord God,“Woe (judgment is coming) to the bloody city,To the pot in which there is rustAnd whose rust has not gone out of it!Take out of it piece by piece,Without making any choice.

7 Her blood was in it. She poured it out onto bare rock. She didn't pour it out on the ground, intending to cover it with dirt.

7 “For her blood is in her midst; She placed it on the bare rock; She did not (H)pour it on the groundTo cover it with dust.

7 For her blood is in the midst of her; she set it upon the top of a rock; she poured it not upon the ground, to cover it with dust;

7 For the blood she shed(b) is still within her.She put it out on the bare rock;she didn’t pour it on the groundto cover it with dust.(E)

7 “For her blood [that she has shed] remains in her midst; She put it on the bare rock; She did not pour it on the groundTo cover it with dust.

8 In order to stir up my anger and in order to take vengeance, I set the blood on a bare rock so that it cannot be covered.'

8 “That it may (I)cause wrath to come up to take vengeance,I have put her blood on the bare rock,That it may not be covered.”

8 That it might cause fury to come up to take vengeance; I have set her blood upon the top of a rock, that it should not be covered.

8 In order to stir up wrath and take vengeance,(F)I have put her blood on the bare rock,so that it would not be covered.

8 “That it may cause wrath to come up to take vengeance,I have put her blood [guilt for her children sacrificed to Molech] on the bare rock,That it may not be covered.”

9 "Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: "How terrible it is for that blood-filled city I'm also going to add to my pile of kindling.

9 ‘Therefore, thus says the Lord God,(J)Woe to the bloody city!I also will make the pile great.

9 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city! I will even make the pile for fire great.

9 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:Woe to the city of bloodshed!(G)I Myself will make the pile of kindling large.

9 ‘Therefore, thus says the Lord God,“Woe to the bloody city!I will also make the pile [of wood] high.

10 Pile up the wood! Make the fire burn hot. Boil the meat! Mix the seasonings. Burn those bones to a crisp!

10 “Heap on the wood, kindle the fire,(g)Boil the flesh wellAnd mix in the spices,And let the bones be burned.

10 Heap on wood, kindle the fire, consume the flesh, and spice it well, and let the bones be burned.

10 Pile on the logs and kindle the fire!Cook the meat welland mix in the spices!(c)(d)Let the bones be burned!

10 “Heap on wood, kindle the fire,Boil the meat well [done]And mix in the spices,And let the bones be burned.

11 Make the pot stand empty on the coals until its bronze glows red, its rust can be scoured off, and its dross completely removed.

11 “Then (K)set it empty on its coalsSo that it may be hotAnd its bronze may (h)glowAnd its (L)filthiness may be melted in it,Its rust consumed.

11 Then set it empty upon the coals thereof, that the brass of it may be hot, and may burn, and that the filthiness of it may be molten in it, that the scum of it may be consumed.

11 Set the empty pot on its coalsso that it becomes hot and its copper glows. Then its impurity will melt inside it;its rust will be consumed.(H)

11 “Then set the empty pot (Jerusalem) back on the coalsSo that it may be hotAnd its bronze may glowAnd its filthiness may be meltedAnd its rust (scum) may be consumed.

12 The pot wearies me, but its thick rust won't come off, even with fire.

12 “She has (M)wearied Me with toil,Yet her great rust has not gone from her;Let her rust be in the fire!

12 She hath wearied herself with lies, and her great scum went not forth out of her: her scum shall be in the fire.

12 It has frustrated every effort;(e)its thick rust will not come off.Into the fire with its rust!

12 “She has wearied Me with toil,Yet her great rust has not left her;Her thick rust and filth will not be burned away by fire [no matter how hot the flame].

13 There is wickedness in your obscene conduct. Even though I've cleansed you, you uncleanness cannot be washed away. You cannot be cleansed again until my rage against you has subsided.'

13 “In your filthiness is lewdness.Because I would have cleansed you,Yet you are (N)not clean,You will not be cleansed from your filthiness againUntil I have (i)(O)spent My wrath on you.

13 In thy filthiness is lewdness: because I have purged thee, and thou wast not purged, thou shalt not be purged from thy filthiness any more, till I have caused my fury to rest upon thee.

13 Because of the indecency of your uncleanness—since I tried to purify you,but you would not be purified from your uncleanness—you will not be pure againuntil I have satisfied My wrath on you.(I)

13 “In your filthiness are lewdness and outrage. Therefore I would have cleansed you,Yet you were not [willing to be] cleansed,You will not be cleansed from your filthiness againUntil I have satisfied My wrath against you.

14 ""I, the LORD have spoken. It will happen, because I'm going to do it. I won't hold back, have compassion, or change my mind. They'll judge you according to your ways and deeds,' declares the Lord GOD."

14 I, the Lord, have spoken; it is (P)coming and I will act. I will not relent, and I will not (Q)pity and I will not be sorry; (R)according to your ways and according to your deeds (j)I will judge you,” declares the Lord God.’”

14 I the LORD have spoken it: it shall come to pass, and I will do it; I will not go back, neither will I spare, neither will I repent; according to thy ways, and according to thy doings, shall they judge thee, saith the Lord GOD.

14 I, Yahweh, have spoken. It is coming, and I will do it!(J)I will not refrain, I will not show pity, and I will not relent.I(f) will judge youaccording to your ways and deeds.(K)This is the declaration of the Lord God.

14 I the Lord have spoken; it is coming and I will act. I will not relent, and I will not have compassion and I will not be sorry; in accordance with your ways and in accordance with your deeds I will judge and punish you,” says the Lord God.’”

The Death Of Ezekiel's Wife: A Sign

15 This message came to me from the LORD:

15 And the word of the Lord came to me saying,

15 Also the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

15 Then the word of the Lord came to me:

15 Also the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

16 "Son of Man, pay attention! I'm about to take away your most precious treasure with a single, fatal stroke, but you are not to mourn, weep, nor even let tears well up in your eyes.

16 “Son of man, behold, I am about to take from you the (S)desire of your eyes with a (T)blow; but you shall not (U)mourn and you shall not weep, and your (V)tears shall not come.

16 Son of man, behold, I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke: yet neither shalt thou mourn nor weep, neither shall thy tears run down.

16 “Son of man, I am about to take the delight of your eyes(L) away from you with a fatal blow. But you must not lament or weep or let your tears flow.(M)

16 “Son of man, listen carefully, I am about to take away from you the desire of your eyes [your wife] with a single stroke. Yet you shall not mourn and you shall not weep, and your tears shall not flow.

17 You are to weep in silence, but you are not to participate in mourning rituals. You are to keep your turban on your head and your sandals on your feet. You are not to cover your mouth or eat what your comforters bring to you."

17 Groan silently; make (W)no mourning for the dead. Bind on your turban and put your shoes on your feet, and do not cover your mustache and (X)do not eat the bread of men.”

17 Forbear to cry, make no mourning for the dead, bind the tire of thine head upon thee, and put on thy shoes upon thy feet, and cover not thy lips, and eat not the bread of men.

17 Groan quietly; do not observe mourning rites for the dead.(N) Put on your turban and strap your sandals on your feet; do not cover your mustache or eat the bread of mourners.”(g)(O)

17 Sigh and groan in silence; do not mourn for the dead. Bind on your turban and put your sandals on your feet, and do not cover your mustache or eat the bread of [mourners furnished by other] men.”

18 So I spoke to the people in the morning, and my wife died that evening. The next morning, I did as I had been commanded.

18 So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. And in the morning I did as I was commanded.

18 So I spake unto the people in the morning: and at even my wife died; and I did in the morning as I was commanded.

18 I spoke to the people in the morning, and my wife died in the evening. The next morning I did just as I was commanded.

18 So I spoke to the people in the morning, and (a)in the evening my wife died. And the next morning I did as I was commanded.

19 Then the people told me, "Are you going to explain what these things that you're doing should mean to us?"

19 The people said to me, “Will you not tell us what these things that you are doing mean for us?”

19 And the people said unto me, Wilt thou not tell us what these things are to us, that thou doest so?

19 Then the people asked me, “Won’t you tell us what these things you are doing mean for us?”

19 The people said to me, “These things that you are doing—tell us, what do they mean for us?”

20 So I responded, "This message came to me from the LORD:

20 Then I said to them, “The word of the Lord came to me saying,

20 Then I answered them, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

20 So I answered them: “The word of the Lord came to me:

20 Then I answered them, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

21 "Tell the house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD says: "Look! I'm about to profane my sanctuary, the source of your proud strength, the desire of your eyes, and the object of your affection. Your sons and daughters, whom you've left behind, will die by the sword.

21 ‘Speak to the house of Israel, “Thus says the Lord God, ‘Behold, I am about to profane My sanctuary, the pride of your power, the (Y)desire of your eyes and the delight of your soul; and your (Z)sons and your daughters whom you have left behind will fall by the sword.

21 Speak unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the excellency of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and that which your soul pitieth; and your sons and your daughters whom ye have left shall fall by the sword.

21 ‘Say to the house of Israel: This is what the Lord God says: I am about to desecrate My sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes, and the desire of your heart. Also, the sons and daughters you left behind will fall by the sword.(P)

21 ‘Speak to the house of Israel, “Thus says the Lord God, ‘Behold, I will (b)profane My sanctuary, the pride of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and the delight of your soul; and your sons and your daughters whom you have left behind [in Jerusalem] will fall by the sword.

22 That's why you will soon be doing what I've just done. You are not to cover your mouth or eat what your comforters bring to you.

22 You will do as I have done; you will not cover your mustache and you will not eat the bread of men.

22 And ye shall do as I have done: ye shall not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of men.

22 Then you will do just as I have done: You will not cover your mustache or eat the bread of mourners.(h)

22 You will do as I [Ezekiel] have done; you shall not cover your mustache nor eat the bread of [mourning brought to you by other] men.

23 Your turbans will be on your heads and your sandals will be on your feet. You won't mourn or weep. Instead, you'll waste away in your sins. Every one of you will groan to his relative.

23 Your turbans will be on your heads and your shoes on your feet. You (AA)will not mourn and you will not weep, but (AB)you will rot away in your iniquities and you will groan (k)to one another.

23 And your tires shall be upon your heads, and your shoes upon your feet: ye shall not mourn nor weep; but ye shall pine away for your iniquities, and mourn one toward another.

23 Your turbans will remain on your heads and your sandals on your feet. You will not lament or weep(Q) but will waste away(R) because of your sins and will groan to one another.

23 Your turbans will be on your heads and your sandals on your feet. You will not mourn or weep, but you will rot away in your sins and you will groan to one another.(A)

24 That's how Ezekiel will be an example for you. You'll be doing exactly what he has done. When it happens, then you'll know that I am the Lord GOD."'

24 Thus Ezekiel will be a (AC)sign to you; according to all that he has done you will do; when it comes, then you will know that I am the Lord God.’”

24 Thus Ezekiel is unto you a sign: according to all that he hath done shall ye do: and when this cometh, ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD.

24 Now Ezekiel will be a sign for you.(S) You will do everything that he has done. When this happens, you will know that I am the Lord Yahweh.

24 So Ezekiel will be a sign to you; in accordance with all that he has done you will do. And when this [destruction of the temple] comes, then you will know [without any doubt] that I am the Lord God.’”

25 "And now, Son of Man, on the day that I take their strength, joy, and glory from them, those whom they love to watch, the focus of their affection their sons and daughters

25 ‘As for you, son of man, will it not be on the day when I take from them their (AD)stronghold, the joy of their (l)pride, the desire of their eyes and (m)their heart’s delight, their sons and their daughters,

25 Also, thou son of man, shall it not be in the day when I take from them their strength, the joy of their glory, the desire of their eyes, and that whereupon they set their minds, their sons and their daughters,

25 “‘Son of man, know that on the day I take their stronghold from them, their pride and joy, the delight of their eyes and the longing of their hearts, as well as their sons and daughters,

25 ‘As for you, son of man, on the day when I take their strength and their stronghold from them, their joy and their glory, the desire of their eyes and (c)their heart’s [chief] delight (the temple), and I also take their sons and their daughters,

26 at that time, a fugitive will come to you and will bring you the news.

26 that on that day he who (AE)escapes will come to you with information for your ears?

26 That he that escapeth in that day shall come unto thee, to cause thee to hear it with thine ears?

26 on that day a fugitive will come to you and report the news.(T)

26 that on that day a survivor will come to you to let you hear [of the destruction of Jerusalem] with your [own] ears.

27 Your mouth will freely speak to the fugitive. You won't be silent any longer. You'll be a sign to them. Then they'll know that I am the LORD."

27 On that day your (AF)mouth will be opened to him who escaped, and you will speak and be mute no longer. Thus you will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the Lord.’”

27 In that day shall thy mouth be opened to him which is escaped, and thou shalt speak, and be no more dumb: and thou shalt be a sign unto them; and they shall know that I am the LORD.

27 On that day your mouth will be opened to talk with him; you will speak and no longer be mute.(U) So you will be a sign for them, and they will know that I am Yahweh.’”

27 On that day (d)your mouth will be opened to him who escaped, and you will speak and no longer be mute. In this way you shall be a sign to them, and they will know [without any doubt] that I am the Lord.’”
