Pharaoh Is Warned Through Assyria's Destruction

1 Now in the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

1 And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, in the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

1 In the (A)eleventh year, in the third month, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me saying,

1 In the eleventh year,(A) in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me:

1 On the first day of the third month of the eleventh year of our captivity, this message came to me from the LORD:

2 Son of man, say to Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and to his people; Whom are you like in your great power?

2 Son of man, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his multitude; Whom art thou like in thy greatness?

2 “Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his (B)hordes,‘Whom are you like in your greatness?

2 “Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his hordes:Who are you like in your greatness?

2 "Son of Man, tell this to Pharaoh, king of Egypt and his gangs: "Who do you think you are? What makes you so great?

3 See, a pine-tree with beautiful branches and thick growth, giving shade and very tall; and its top was among the clouds.

3 Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches, and with a shadowing shroud, and of an high stature; and his top was among the thick boughs.

3 ‘Behold, Assyria was a (C)cedar in LebanonWith beautiful branches and forest shade,And (a)(D)very high,And its top was among the (b)clouds.

3 Think of Assyria, a cedar in Lebanon,(B)with beautiful branches and shady foliageand of lofty height. Its top was among the clouds.(a)

3 Think about Assyria, that cedar of Lebanon, beautiful with its branches, like a shady forest, with an awesome height, its summit touches the clouds.

4 It got strength from the waters and the deep made it tall: its streams went round about its planted land and it sent out its waterways to all the trees of the field.

4 The waters made him great, the deep set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants, and sent out her little rivers unto all the trees of the field.

4 ‘The (E)waters made it grow, the (c)deep made it high. With its rivers it continually (d)extended all around its planting place,And sent out its channels to all the trees of the field.

4 The waters caused it to grow;the underground springs made it tall, directing their rivers all aroundthe place where the tree was plantedand sending their channelsto all the trees of the field.

4 Abundant water made it great, Subterranean rivers made it grow. Rivers surrounded the area where it had been planted, and water channels nourished all the trees in the fields.

5 In this way it became taller than all the trees of the field; and its branches were increased and its arms became long because of the great waters.

5 Therefore his height was exalted above all the trees of the field, and his boughs were multiplied, and his branches became long because of the multitude of waters, when he shot forth.

5 ‘Therefore (F)its height was loftier than all the trees of the fieldAnd its boughs became many and its branches longBecause of (G)many waters (e)as it spread them out.

5 Therefore the cedar became greater in heightthan all the trees of the field.(C)Its branches multiplied, and its boughs grew longas it spread them outbecause of the plentiful water.(D)

5 That's why it grew taller than any of the trees in the fields. Its boughs flourished. Its branches grew luxurious because all the water made it spread out well.

6 In its branches all the birds of heaven came to rest, and under its arms all the beasts of the field gave birth to their young, and great nations were living in its shade.

6 All the fowls of heaven made their nests in his boughs, and under his branches did all the beasts of the field bring forth their young, and under his shadow dwelt all great nations.

6 ‘All the (H)birds of the heavens nested in its boughs,And under its branches all the beasts of the field gave birth,And all great nations lived under its shade.

6 All the birds of the skynested in its branches,(E)and all the animals of the fieldgave birth beneath its boughs;all the great nations lived in its shade.

6 The birds in the sky made nests in its boughs; all the beasts of the field gave birth under its branches. All the great nations rested in its shade.

7 So it was beautiful, being so tall and its branches so long, for its root was by great waters.

7 Thus was he fair in his greatness, in the length of his branches: for his root was by great waters.

7 ‘So it was beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its branches; For its (f)roots extended to many waters.

7 It was beautiful in its greatness,in the length of its limbs, for its roots extended to abundant water.

7 "Beautiful because it was so great, with its long branches, it was rooted in many bodies of water.

8 No cedars were equal to it in the garden of God; the fir-trees were not like its branches, and plane-trees were as nothing in comparison with its arms; no tree in the garden of God was so beautiful.

8 The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chesnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty.

8 ‘The (I)cedars in (J)God’s garden (g)could not match it;The (h)cypresses (i)could not compare with its boughs,And the plane trees (j)could not match its branches. No tree in (K)God’s garden (k)could compare with it in its beauty.

8 The cedars in God’s garden could not rival it;(F)the pine trees couldn’t compare with its branches, nor could the plane trees match its boughs. No tree in the garden of Godcould compare with it in beauty.

8 The cedars in God's garden could not compare to it; Fir trees could not match its boughs. The plane tree never grew branches like it, and no tree in God's garden compares to its beauty.

9 I made it beautiful with its mass of branches: so that all the trees in the garden of God were full of envy of it.

9 I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches: so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied him.

9 ‘I made it beautiful with the multitude of its branches,And all the trees of (L)Eden, which were in the (M)garden of God, were jealous of it.

9 I made it beautiful with its many limbs, and all the trees of Eden, which were in God’s garden, envied it.

9 I made it beautiful, including all of its branches; all the trees in God's garden of Eden envied it!'"

10 For this cause the Lord has said: Because he is tall, and has put his top among the clouds, and his heart is full of pride because he is so high,

10 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast lifted up thyself in height, and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height;

10 ‘Therefore thus says the Lord (l)God, “Because (m)it is high in stature and has set its top among the (n)clouds, and its (N)heart is haughty in its loftiness,

10 “Therefore this is what the Lord God says: Since it(b) became great in height and set its top among the clouds,(c) and it(d) grew proud(G) on account of its height,

10 "Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: "Because of its towering height, with its summit reaching into the clouds, and because it was haughty in its position,

11 I have given him up into the hands of a strong one of the nations; he will certainly give him the reward of his sin, driving him out.

11 I have therefore delivered him into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen; he shall surely deal with him: I have driven him out for his wickedness.

11 therefore I will give it into the hand of a (o)(O)despot of the nations; he will thoroughly deal with it. According to its wickedness I have (P)driven it away.

11 I determined to hand it over to a ruler of nations;(H) he would surely deal with it. I banished it because of its wickedness.

11 I turned it over to the leader of those nations, who dealt with it thoroughly. I have driven it away because of its wickedness.

12 And men from strange lands, who are to be feared among the nations, after cutting him off, have let him be: on the mountains and in all the valleys his branches have come down; his arms are broken by all the waterways of the land; all the peoples of the earth have gone from his shade, and have let him be.

12 And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the people of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him.

12 (Q)Alien (R)tyrants of the nations have cut it down and left it; on the (S)mountains and in all the valleys its branches have fallen and its boughs have been broken in all the ravines of the land. And all the peoples of the earth have (T)gone down from its shade and left it.

12 Foreigners, ruthless men from the nations,(I) cut it down and left it lying. Its limbs fell on the mountains and in every valley; its boughs lay broken in all the earth’s ravines. All the peoples of the earth left its shade and abandoned it.

12 Foreign dictators have trimmed it down to size and abandoned it. Its branches have fallen off on mountains and in all the valleys. Its boughs have broken off in all the ravines of the land. All the nations of the earth have moved out of its shade and abandoned it.

13 All the birds of heaven have come to rest on his broken stem where it is stretched on the earth, and all the beasts of the field will be on his branches:

13 Upon his ruin shall all the fowls of the heaven remain, and all the beasts of the field shall be upon his branches:

13 On its ruin all the (U)birds of the heavens will dwell, and all the beasts of the field will be on its fallen branches

13 All the birds of the sky nested on its fallen trunk, and all the animals of the field were among its boughs.

13 All the birds in the sky will live among its ruins, and the wild animals will forage among its branches.

14 In order that no trees by the waters may be lifted up in their growth, putting their tops among the clouds; and that no trees which are watered may take their place on high: for they are all given up to death, to the lowest parts of the earth among the children of men, with those who go down to the underworld.

14 To the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither their trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.

14 so that all the trees by the waters may not be exalted in their stature, nor set their top among the (p)clouds, nor their (q)well-watered mighty ones stand erect in their height. For they have all been given over to death, to the (V)earth beneath, among the sons of men, with those who go down to the pit.”

14 This happened so that no trees planted beside water would become great in height and set their tops among the clouds,(e) and so that no other well-watered trees would reach them in height. For they have all been consigned to death, to the underworld, among the people who descend to the Pit.(J)

14 As a result, none of its watered trees will grow tall, their tops will never reach to the clouds, and they'll never grow so high again, because all of them have been appointed to death in the world beneath where human beings go, that is, down to the Pit.'"

15 This is what the Lord has said: The day when he goes down to the underworld, I will make the deep full of grief for him; I will keep back her streams and the great waters will be stopped: I will make Lebanon dark for him, and all the trees of the field will be feeble because of him.

15 Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him.

15 ‘Thus says the Lord God, “On the day when it went down to Sheol I (W)caused lamentations; I closed the (r)deep over it and held back its rivers. And its many waters were stopped up, and I made Lebanon (s)mourn for it, and all the trees of the field wilted away on account of it.

15 “This is what the Lord God says: I caused grieving on the day the cedar went down to Sheol.(K) I closed off the underground deep because of it:(f) I held back the rivers of the deep, and its abundant waters were restrained. I made Lebanon mourn on account of it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it.

15 "This is what the Lord GOD says: "On the day that it descended into Sheol, I shut down its water supplies, covered over its deep water, and shut down its rivers. As a result its abundant water sources dried up, and I caused Lebanon to mourn for it. All the trees of the field wilted because of it.

16 I will send shaking on the nations at the sound of his fall, when I send him down to the underworld with those who go down into the deep: and on earth they will be comforting themselves, all the trees of Eden, the best of Lebanon, even all the watered ones.

16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth.

16 I made the nations (X)quake at the sound of its fall when I made it (Y)go down to Sheol with those who go down to the pit; and all the (t)well-watered trees of Eden, the choicest and best of (Z)Lebanon, were (AA)comforted in the earth beneath.

16 I made the nations quake at the sound of its downfall, when I threw it down to Sheol to be with those who descend to the Pit. Then all the trees of Eden,(L) all the well-watered trees, the choice and best of Lebanon, were comforted(M) in the underworld.

16 I made the nations tremble when they heard that Assyria was falling, descending into Sheol to join those who go down into the Pit. Then all of the trees of Eden in the world below were comforted, including the choicest and best of Lebanon, all of whom were well-watered.

17 And they will go down with him to the underworld, to those who have been put to the sword; even those who were his helpers, living under his shade among the nations

17 They also went down into hell with him unto them that be slain with the sword; and they that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.

17 They also (AB)went down with it to Sheol to those who were (AC)slain by the sword; and those who were its (u)strength lived (AD)under its shade among the nations.

17 They too descended with it to Sheol, to those slain by the sword. As its allies(g)(h) they had lived in its shade among the nations.

17 They also went down with it into Sheol, to those who had been killed violently and to those who had trusted in its strength by living in its shadow among the nations.

18 Whom then are you like? for you will be sent down with the trees of Eden into the lowest parts of the earth: there you will be stretched out among those without circumcision, with those who were put to the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his people, says the Lord.

18 To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? yet shalt thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the nether parts of the earth: thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.

18 “To which among the trees of Eden are you thus (v)equal in glory and greatness? Yet you will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the earth beneath; you will lie in the midst of the (AE)uncircumcised, with those who were slain by the sword. (AF)So is Pharaoh and all his hordes!”’ declares the Lord God.”

18 “Who then are you like in glory and greatness among Eden’s trees? You also will be brought down to the underworld to be with the trees of Eden. You will lie among the uncircumcised with those slain by the sword.(N) This is Pharaoh and all his hordes”—the declaration of the Lord God.

18 So tell me now, which of the trees of Eden compares to you in glory or greatness? Nevertheless, you'll be brought down, along with those trees of Eden, to the earth below. You'll lie in the middle of the uncircumcised, with those who have been killed in war. Pharaoh and all his gang will be just like this!' declares the Lord GOD."
