Judah And Tamar

1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a man of Adullam whose name was Hirah.

1 And it came about at that time, that Judah (a)departed from his brothers and (b)visited a certain (A)Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

1 At that time Judah left his brothers and settled near an Adullamite(A) named Hirah.

1 Right about then, Judah left his brothers and went to live with an Adullamite man named Hirah.

2 And Judah saw there the daughter of a Canaanitish man whose name was Shua; and he took her, and went in to her.

2 Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was (B)Shua; and he took her and went in to her.

2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.

2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua; he took her as a wife and slept with her.

2 There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her, had sexual relations with her,

3 And she conceived and bore a son; and he called his name Er.

3 So she conceived and bore a son and he named him (C)Er.

3 And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

3 She conceived and gave birth to a son, and he named him Er.(B)

3 and she conceived, bore a son, and named him Er.

4 And she again conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Onan.

4 Then she conceived again and bore a son and named him (D)Onan.

4 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

4 She conceived again, gave birth to a son, and named him Onan.

4 Later, she conceived again, bore another son, and named him Onan.

5 And again she bore a son, and she called his name Shelah; and he was at Chezib when she bore him.

5 She bore still another son and named him (E)Shelah; and it was at Chezib (c)that she bore him.

5 And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.

5 She gave birth to another son and named him Shelah. It was at Chezib that(a)(b) she gave birth to him.

5 Then she bore yet another son and named him Shelah. Judah was living in Kezib when she bore him.

6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

6 Now Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

6 Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

6 Judah found a wife for his oldest son Er. Her name was Tamar.

7 And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of Jehovah, and Jehovah slew him.

7 But (F)Er, Judah’s firstborn, was evil in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord took his life.

7 And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.

7 Now Er, Judah’s firstborn, was evil in the Lord’s sight, and the Lord put him to death.(C)

7 But the LORD considered Er, Judah's oldest son, to be wicked so he put him to death.

8 Then Judah said to Onan, Go in to thy brother's wife, and fulfil to her the brother-in-law's duty, and raise up seed to thy brother.

8 Then Judah said to Onan, “(G)Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform your duty as a brother-in-law to her, and raise up (d)offspring for your brother.”

8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

8 Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife. Perform your duty as her brother-in-law(D) and produce offspring for your brother.”(E)

8 So Judah instructed Onan, "You are to have sexual relations with your dead brother's wife, performing the duty of a brother-in-law with her, and have offspring for your brother."

9 But when Onan knew that the seed should not be his own, it came to pass when he went in to his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, in order to give no seed to his brother.

9 Onan knew that the (e)(H)offspring would not be his; so when he went in to his brother’s wife, he (f)wasted his seed on the ground in order not to give (g)offspring to his brother.

9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

9 But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he released his semen on the ground so that he would not produce offspring for his brother.

9 But Onan knew that the offspring wouldn't be his own heir, so whenever he had sexual relations with his brother's wife, he would spill his semen on the ground to avoid fathering offspring for his brother.

10 And the thing which he did was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and he slew him also.

10 But what he did was displeasing in the sight of the Lord; so He (I)took his life also.

10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.

10 What he did was evil in the Lord’s sight, so He put him to death also.

10 The LORD considered what Onan was doing to be evil, so he put him to death, too.

11 And Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, Remain a widow in thy father's house, until Shelah my son is grown; for he said, Lest he die also, as his brethren. And Tamar went and remained in her father's house.

11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “(J)Remain a widow in your father’s house until my son Shelah grows up”; for he (h)thought, “I am afraid that he too may die like his brothers.” So Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.

11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.

11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Remain a widow in your father’s house until my son Shelah grows up.”(F) For he thought, “He might die too, like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s house.

11 After this, Judah told his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Go live as a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up." But he was really thinking, ""otherwise, Shelah might die like his brothers." So Tamar left and lived in her father's house.

12 And as the days were multiplied, Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. And Judah was comforted, and he went up to his sheep-shearers, to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

12 Now (i)after a considerable time Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died; and when (j)the time of mourning was ended, Judah went up to his sheepshearers at (K)Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

12 And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

12 After a long time(c) Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had finished mourning, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went up to Timnah(G) to the sheepshearers.

12 Some years later, Shua's daughter (that is, Judah's wife) died. As Judah was grieving, he visited the shearers of his flock in Timnah, accompanied by his Adullamite friend Hirah.

13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.

13 It was told to Tamar, “(k)Behold, your father-in-law is going up to (L)Timnah to shear his sheep.”

13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

13 Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”

13 "Look!" somebody reported to Tamar, "Your father-in-law is going to Timnah to shear his sheep."

14 And she put the garments of her widowhood off from her, and covered herself with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the entry of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as wife.

14 So she (l)removed her widow’s garments and (M)covered herself with a (m)veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gateway of (n)Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah had grown up, and (N)she had not been given to him as a wife.

14 And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

14 So she took off her widow’s clothes, veiled her face,(H) covered herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim,(d) which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had grown up, she had not been given to him as a wife.

14 So she took off her mourning apparel, covered herself with a shawl, and concealed her outward appearance. Then she went out and sat at the entrance of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah, because she knew that even though Shelah had grown up, she wasn't being given to him as his wife.

15 And Judah saw her, and took her for a harlot; because she had covered her face.

15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a harlot, for she had covered her face.

15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.

15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, since she had concealed her face.

16 And he turned aside to her by the way, and said, Come, I pray thee, let me go in to thee; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in to me?

16 So he turned aside to her by the road, and said, “(o)Here now, let me come in to you”; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”

16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

16 He went over to her and said, “Come, let me sleep with you,” for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law.(I)She said, “What will you give me for sleeping with me?”

16 So on the way, he turned aside, approached her, and said, "Come on! Let's have some sex!" But he didn't realize that he was talking to his own daughter-in-law. "What will you give me," she asked, "in order to have sex with me?"

17 And he said, I will send thee a kid of the goats from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, until thou send it?

17 He said, therefore, “I will send you a (p)young goat from the flock.” She said, moreover, “Will you give a pledge until you send it?”

17 And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?

17 “I will send you a young goat from my flock,” he replied. But she said, “Only if you leave something with me until you send it.”

17 "I'll send you a young goat from the flock," he responded. But she pressed him, asking, "What security will you put up until you've sent it?"

18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy lace, and thy staff which is in thy hand. And he gave it her, and went in to her; and she conceived by him.

18 He said, “What pledge shall I give you?” And she said, “(O)Your seal and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” So he gave them to her and went in to her, and she conceived by him.

18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

18 “What should I give you?” he asked. She answered, “Your signet ring, your cord, and the staff in your hand.” So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she got pregnant by him.

18 Then he asked, "What pledge do you want me to give you?"

19 And she arose and went away; and she laid by her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

19 Then she arose and departed, and (q)removed her (r)veil and put on her widow’s garments.

19 And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

19 She got up and left, then removed her veil and put her widow’s clothes back on.

19 "Your signet ring, cord, and the staff in your hand," she suggested. So he gave them to her, had sex with her, and she became pregnant by him. Then she got up and left. Later, she took off her shawl and put on her mourning clothes.

20 And Judah sent the kid of the goats by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman's hand; but he found her not.

20 When Judah sent the (s)young goat by his friend the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand, he did not find her.

20 And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.

20 When Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get back the items he had left with the woman, he could not find her.

20 Later on, Judah sent his Adullamite friend to take her a young goat, intending to retrieve what he had put up as security from the woman, but he could not find her.

21 And he asked the men of her place, saying, Where is the prostitute that was at Enaim, by the way-side? And they said, There was no prostitute here.

21 He asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the temple prostitute who was by the road at Enaim?” But they said, “There has been no temple prostitute here.”

21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.

21 He asked the men of the place, “Where is the cult prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?”“There has been no cult prostitute here,” they answered.

21 He asked the men who lived in that area, "Where's that temple prostitute who was sitting alongside the road at Enaim?" But they replied, "There's been no temple prostitute here."

22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I have not found her; and also the men of the place said, No prostitute has been here.

22 So he returned to Judah, and said, “I did not find her; and furthermore, the men of the place said, ‘There has been no temple prostitute here.’”

22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.

22 So the Adullamite returned to Judah, saying, “I couldn’t find her, and furthermore, the men of the place said, ‘There has been no cult prostitute here.’”

22 So he returned to Judah and said, "I haven't found her. Also, the men who are from there said, "There's been no prostitute here.'"

23 Then Judah said, Let her take it for herself, lest we be put to shame. Behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.

23 Then Judah said, “Let her (t)keep them, otherwise we will become a laughingstock. (u)After all, I sent this young goat, but you did not find her.”

23 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.

23 Judah replied, “Let her keep the items for herself; otherwise we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send this young goat, but you couldn’t find her.”

23 Then Judah said, "Let her have those things. Otherwise, we'll become contemptible. I sent this young goat, but you didn't find her."

24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter-in-law has committed fornication, and behold, she is also with child by fornication. And Judah said, Bring her forth, that she may be burned.

24 Now it was about three months later that Judah was informed, “(v)Your daughter-in-law Tamar has played the harlot, and behold, she is also with child by harlotry.” Then Judah said, “Bring her out and (P)let her be burned!”

24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

24 About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law, Tamar, has been acting like a prostitute, and now she is pregnant.”“Bring her out!” Judah said. “Let her be burned to death!”(J)

24 Three months later, it was reported to Judah, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar has turned to prostitution! And look! She's pregnant because of it!" "Bring her out," Judah responded. "Let's burn her to death!"

25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, By the man to whom these belong am I with child; and she said, Acknowledge, I pray thee, whose are this signet, and this lace, and this staff.

25 It was while she was being brought out that she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “I am with child by the man to whom these things belong.” And she said, “(Q)Please examine and see, whose signet ring and cords and staff are these?”

25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.

25 As she was being brought out, she sent her father-in-law this message: “I am pregnant by the man to whom these items belong.” And she added, “Examine them. Whose signet ring, cord, and staff are these?”

25 While they were bringing her out, she sent this message to her father-in-law: "I am pregnant by the man to whom these things belong. Furthermore," she added, "tell me to whom this signet ring, cord, and staff belongs."

26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She is more righteous than I, because I have not given her to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

26 Judah recognized them, and said, “(R)She is more righteous than I, inasmuch as (S)I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not (w)have relations with her again.

26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

26 Judah recognized them and said, “She is more in the right(e) than I,(K) since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not know her intimately again.

26 When Judah recognized them, he admitted, "She is more upright than I, because I never did give her my son Shelah." And he never had sex with her again.

27 And it came to pass at the time of her delivery, that behold, twins were in her womb.

27 It came about at the time she was giving birth, that behold, there were (T)twins in her womb.

27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.

27 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twins in her womb.

27 Later, when it was time for Tamar to give birth, she was carrying twins in her womb!

28 And it came to pass when she brought forth, that one stretched out his hand, and the midwife took it and bound round his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.

28 Moreover, it took place while she was giving birth, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.”

28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.

28 As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand, and the midwife took it and tied a scarlet thread around it, announcing, “This one came out first.”

28 While she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand, so the midwife grabbed it and tied something scarlet around his hand, observing, "This one came out first."

29 And it came to pass as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out; and she said, How hast thou broken forth! on thee be the breach! And they called his name Pherez.

29 But it came about as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out. Then she said, “What a breach you have made for yourself!” So he was named (x)(U)Perez.

29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.

29 But then he pulled his hand back, and his brother came out. Then she said, “You have broken out first!” So he was named Perez.(f)(L)

29 As it was, he withdrew his hand, and then his brother was born. Amazed, the midwife cried out loud, "What's this? A breach birth?" So that boy was named Perez.

30 And afterwards came out his brother, round whose hand was the scarlet thread; and they called his name Zerah.

30 Afterward his brother came out who had the scarlet thread on his hand; and he was named (y)(V)Zerah.

30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

30 Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread tied to his hand, came out, and was named Zerah.(g)

30 Afterwards, his brother came out, and around his hand was the scarlet. So they named him Zerah.
