The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have

the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.

Now someone told David, saying, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” And David said, “O Lord, I pray, make the counsel of Ahithophel foolishness.”

“He captures the wise by their own shrewdness,
And the advice of the cunning is quickly thwarted.

“Surely every man walks about as a phantom;
Surely they make an uproar for nothing;
He amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.

Unless the Lord

builds the house,

They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord

guards the city,

The watchman keeps awake in vain.

There is no wisdom and no understanding
And no counsel against the Lord.

The coastlands have seen and are afraid;
The ends of the earth tremble;
They have drawn near and have come.

Behold, all you who kindle a fire,
Who encircle yourselves with firebrands,
Walk in the light of your fire
And among the brands you have set ablaze.
This you will have from My hand:
You will lie down in torment.

“Why do you spend money for what is not bread,
And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
And delight yourself in abundance.

Thus says the Lord of hosts,
“The broad wall of Babylon will be completely razed
And her high gates will be set on fire;
So the peoples will toil for nothing,
And the nations become exhausted only for fire.”

Though Edom says, “We have been beaten down, but we will

return and build up the ruins”; thus says the Lord of hosts, “They may build, but I will tear down; and men will call them the wicked territory, and the people toward whom the Lord is indignant forever.”
