The Righteous Will Live By Faith

1 I will stand at my guard postAnd station myself on the tower; And I will keep watch to see what He will say to me,And what answer I will give [as His spokesman] when I am reproved.

1 I will (A)stand on my guard postAnd station myself on the rampart; And I will (B)keep watch to see (C)what He will speak to me,And how I may reply (a)when I am reproved.

1 I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.

1 I will stand at my guard postand station myself on the lookout tower.(A)I will watch to see what He will say to me(B)and what I should(a) reply about my complaint.

1 "I will stand at my guard post and station myself on a tower. I will wait and see what the LORD will say about me and what I will answer when he reprimands me."

God's Second Answer

2 Then the Lord answered me and said,“Write the visionAnd engrave it plainly on [clay] tabletsSo that the one who reads it will run.

2 Then the Lord answered me and said,(D)Record the visionAnd inscribe it on tablets,That (b)the one who (c)reads it may run.

2 And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.

2 The Lord answered me:Write down this vision;(C)clearly inscribe it on tabletsso one may easily read it.(b)

2 When he answered, the LORD told me: "Write out the revelation, engraving it clearly on the tablets, so that a courier may run with it.

3 “For the vision is yet for the appointed [future] timeIt hurries toward the goal [of fulfillment]; it will not fail.Even though it delays, wait [patiently] for it,Because it will certainly come; it will not delay.(A)

3 “For the vision is yet for the (E)appointed time;It (d)hastens toward the goal and it will not (e)fail.Though it tarries, (F)wait for it;For it will certainly come, it (G)will not delay.

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

3 For the vision is yet for the appointed time;it testifies about the end and will not lie.Though it delays, wait for it,since it will certainly come and not be late.(D)

3 For the revelation pertains to an appointed time it speaks truthfully about the end. Though it delays, wait for it, because it will surely come about it will not be late!

Doom On The Unrighteous

5 “Moreover, wine is treacherous and betrays the arrogant man,So that he does not stay at home. His appetite is large like Sheol,And he is like death, never satisfied. He gathers to himself all nationsAnd collects to himself all peoples [as if he owned them].

5 “Furthermore, (J)wine betrays the (K)haughty man,So that he does not (L)stay at home.He (M)enlarges his appetite like Sheol,And he is like death, never satisfied. He also gathers to himself all nationsAnd collects to himself all peoples.

5 Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:

5 Moreover, wine(e) betrays;an arrogant man is never at rest.(f)He enlarges his appetite like Sheol, and like Death he is never satisfied.(F)He gathers all the nations to himself;he collects all the peoples for himself.

5 Moreover, just as wine leads astray the proud and powerful man, he remains restless; he has expanded his appetite like the afterlife or death itself, he is never satisfied. He gathers to himself all of the nations, taking captive all of the people for himself."

The Five Woe Oracles

6 “Will all these [victims of his greed] not take up a taunting song against him,And in mocking derision against himSay, ‘(a)Woe (judgment is coming) to him who increases that which is not his—How long [will he possess it]?And [woe to him who] makes himself wealthy with loans.’

6 “Will not all of these (N)take up a taunt-song against him,Even mockery and insinuations against himAnd say, ‘(O)Woe to him who increases what is not his—For how long—And makes himself (g)rich with loans?’

6 Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay!

6 Won’t all of these take up a taunt against him, with mockery and riddles about him? They will say:Woe to him who amasses what is not his—how much longer?—and loads himself with goods taken in pledge.(G)

6 "Will not all of these ridicule him with mocking scorn? They will say, "Woe to the one who hordes for himself what isn't his. How long will you enrich yourself by extortion?'

7 “Will your creditors not rise up suddenly,And those who collect from you awaken? Then you will become plunder for them.

7 “Will not (h)your creditors (P)rise up suddenly,And those who (i)collect from you awaken?Indeed, you will become plunder for them.

7 Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and awake that shall vex thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them?

7 Won’t your creditors suddenly arise, and those who disturb you wake up?Then you will become spoil for them.(H)

7 Won't your creditors revolt unexpectedly? Won't those who make you tremble wake up? As a result, you'll become their prey!

8 “Because you [king of Babylon] have looted many nations,All peoples who are left will loot you—Because of human bloodshed and for the violence done to the land,To the city and all its inhabitants.

8 “Because you have (Q)looted many nations,All the remainder of the peoples will loot you—Because of human bloodshed and violence (j)done to the land,To the town and all its inhabitants.

8 Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee; because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.

8 Since you have plundered many nations, all the peoples who remain will plunder you—because of human bloodshedand violence against lands, cities, and all who live in them.(I)

10 “You have devised a shameful thing for your houseBy cutting off and putting an end to many peoples; So you are sinning against your own life and forfeiting it.

10 “You have devised a (T)shameful thing for your houseBy cutting off many peoples; So you are (U)sinning against yourself.

10 Thou hast consulted shame to thy house by cutting off many people, and hast sinned against thy soul.

10 You have planned shame for your houseby wiping out many peoplesand sinning against your own self.

10 You have brought shame to yourself by killing many people you are forfeiting your own life.

11 “For the stone will cry out from the wall [to accuse you—built in sin!]And the rafter will answer it out of the woodwork.

11 “Surely the (V)stone will cry out from the wall,And the rafter will answer it from the (k)framework.

11 For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.

11 For the stones will cry out(K) from the wall, and the rafters will answer themfrom the woodwork.

11 Indeed, the stone will cry out from the wall and the rafter will respond from the woodwork."

12 “Woe (judgment is coming) to him who builds a city with bloodshedAnd establishes a town by violence!

13 “Is it not indeed from the Lord of hostsThat peoples labor [only] for the fire [that will destroy their work],And nations grow weary for nothing [that is, things which have no lasting value]?

13 “Is it not indeed from the Lord of hostsThat peoples (X)toil for fire,And nations grow weary for nothing?

13 Behold, is it not of the LORD of hosts that the people shall labour in the very fire, and the people shall weary themselves for very vanity?

13 Is it not from the Lord of Hoststhat the peoples labor only to fuel the fireand countries exhaust themselves for nothing?(M)

13 Is it not because of the LORD of the Heavenly Armies that people grow tired putting out fires, and nations weary themselves over nothing?

14 “But [the time is coming when] the earth shall be filledWith the knowledge of the glory of the Lord,As the waters cover the sea.(C)

14 “For the earth will be (Y)filledWith the knowledge of the glory of the Lord,As the waters cover the sea.

14 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

15 Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!

15 Woe to him who gives his neighbors drink, pouring out your wrath(h)and even making them drunk,in order to look at their nakedness!

15 "Woe to the one who supplies his neighbor with a drink! You are forcing your bottle on him, making him drunk so you can see them naked.

16 “You will be filled with disgrace instead of honor. Now drink and expose your own nakedness! The cup [of wrath] in the Lord’s right hand will come around to you [O destroyer],And utter disgrace will be on your own glory.(D)

16 Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered: the cup of the LORD'S right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing shall be on thy glory.

16 You will be filled with disgrace instead of glory. You also—drink, and expose your uncircumcision!(i)The cup in the Lord’s right handwill come around to you,and utter disgrace will cover your glory.(O)

The Message About Idols

18 “What profit is the carved image when its maker has formed it?It is only a cast image, and a teacher of lies. For its maker trusts in his own creation [as his god]When he makes speechless idols.

18 “What (AF)profit is the (s)idol when its maker has carved it,Or (t)an image, a (AG)teacher of falsehood? For its maker (AH)trusts in his own handiworkWhen he fashions speechless idols.

18 What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols?

18 What use is a carved idolafter its craftsman carves it?It is only a cast image, a teacher of lies. For the one who crafts its shape trusts in itand makes idols that cannot speak.

18 "Where is the benefit in owning a carved image, that motivates its maker to carve it? It is only a cast image a teacher that lies because the engraver entrusts himself to his carving, crafting speechless idols.

19 “Woe (judgment is coming) to him who says to the wooden image, ‘Awake!’And to the speechless stone, ‘Arise!’And that is your teacher?Look, it is overlaid with gold and silver,And there is no breath at all inside it.

19 “Woe to him who (AI)says to a piece of wood, ‘(AJ)Awake!’To a mute stone, ‘Arise!’And that is your teacher?Behold, it is overlaid with (AK)gold and silver,And there is (AL)no breath at all inside it.

19 Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.

19 Woe to him who says to wood: Wake up!or to mute stone: Come alive! Can it teach?Look! It may be plated with gold and silver, yet there is no breath in it at all.

19 "Woe to the one who says to a tree, "Wake up!' or "Arise!' to a speechless stone. Idols like this can't teach, can they? Look, even though it is overlaid with gold and silver, there's no breath in it at all."

20 “But the Lord is in His holy temple.Let all the earth hush and be silent before Him.”(E)

20 “But the (AM)Lord is in His holy temple.(u)Let all the earth (AN)be silent before Him.”

20 But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

20 But the Lord is in His holy temple;let everyone on earthbe silent in His presence.(P)

20 "The LORD is in his holy Temple. All the earth be quiet in his presence."
