A High Priest Like Melchizedek

1 For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of people in the things relating to God, in order that he can offer both gifts and sacrifices on behalf of sins,

1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:

1 For every high priest (A)taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in (B)things pertaining to God, in order to (C)offer both gifts and sacrifices (D)for sins;

1 For every high priest taken from men is appointed in service(a) to God for the people, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.

1 For every high priest selected from among men is appointed to officiate on their behalf in matters relating to God, that is, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.

2 being able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and led astray, since he himself also is surrounded by weakness,

2 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.

2 (a)(E)he can deal gently with the (F)ignorant and (G)misguided, since he himself also is (b)(H)beset with weakness;

2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he is also subject to weakness.(A)

2 He can deal gently with people who are ignorant and easily deceived, since he himself is subject to weakness.

3 and because of it he is obligated to offer [sacrifices] for sins {for himself also, as well as for the people}.

3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.

3 and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices (I)for sins, (J)as for the people, so also for himself.

3 Because of this, he must make a sin offering for himself as well as for the people.(B)

3 For that reason he is obligated to offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as for those of the people.

4 And someone does not take for himself the honor, but is called by God, just as Aaron also [was].

4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

4 And (K)no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even (L)as Aaron was.

4 No one takes this honor on himself; instead, a person is called by God, just as Aaron was.(C)

4 No one takes this honor upon himself but he is called to it by God, just as Aaron was.

5 Thus also Christ did not glorify himself to become high priest, but the one who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you,"

5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

5 So also Christ (M)did not glorify Himself so as to become a (N)high priest, but He who (O)said to Him,(P)You are My Son,Today I have begotten You”;

5 In the same way, the Messiah did not exalt Himself to become a high priest, but the One who said to Him, You are My Son; today I have become Your Father,(D)(b)

5 In the same way, the Messiah did not take upon himself the glory of being a high priest. No, it was God who said to him, "You are my Son. Today I have become your Father."

6 just as also in another [place] he says, "You [are] a priest {forever} according to the order of Melchizedek,"

6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

6 just as He says also in another passage,(Q)You are a priest foreverAccording to (R)the order of Melchizedek.”

6 also said in another passage, You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.(E)(c)

6 As he also says in another place, "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek."

7 who in the days of his flesh offered up both prayers and supplications, with loud crying and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard as a result of his reverence.

7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

7 (c)In the days of His flesh, (d)(S)He offered up both prayers and supplications with (T)loud crying and tears to the One (U)able to save Him (e)from death, and He (f)was heard because of His (V)piety.

7 During His earthly life,(d) He offered prayers and appeals(F) with loud cries and tears(G) to the One who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence.

7 As a mortal man, he offered up prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his devotion to God.

8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered,

8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

8 Although He was (W)a Son, He learned (X)obedience from the things which He suffered.

8 Though He was God’s Son, He learned obedience through what He suffered.(H)

8 Son though he was, he learned obedience through his sufferings

9 and being perfected, he became the source of eternal salvation to all those who obey him,

9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

9 And having been made (Y)perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,

9 After He was perfected, He became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him,

9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him,

10 being designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Advanced Teaching Hindered By Immaturity

11 Concerning this {we have much to say and it is difficult to explain}, since you have become sluggish in hearing.

11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.

12 For indeed, [although you] ought to be teachers {by this time}, you have need of someone to teach you again the beginning elements of the oracles of God, and {you have need of} milk, not solid food.

12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

12 For though (h)by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you (AB)the (i)(AC)elementary principles of the (AD)oracles of God, and you have come to need (AE)milk and not solid food.

12 Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God’s revelation again. You need milk, not solid food.(I)

12 In fact, though by now you should be teachers, you still need someone to teach you the basic truths of God's word. You have become people who need milk instead of solid food.

13 For everyone who partakes of milk [is] unacquainted with the message of righteousness, because he is an infant.

13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an (AF)infant.

13 Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant.

13 For everyone who lives on milk is still a baby and does not yet know the difference between right and wrong.

14 But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have trained their faculties for the distinguishing of both good and evil.

14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

14 But solid food is for (AG)the mature, who because of practice have their senses (AH)trained to (AI)discern good and evil.

14 But solid food is for the mature—for those whose senses have been trained to distinguish between good and evil.(J)
