A High Priest Like Melchizedek

1 For every high priest is appointed to officiate for men in religious matters, offering gifts and sacrifices for their sins: being chosen from among the people. that as he himself is surrounded with infirmities,

1 For every high priest (A)taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in (B)things pertaining to God, in order to (C)offer both gifts and sacrifices (D)for sins;

1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:

1 For every high priest taken from men is appointed in service(a) to God for the people, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.

1 For every high priest selected from among men is appointed to officiate on their behalf in matters relating to God, that is, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.

2 he might have the greater compassion for those who sin through ignorance or mistake. and for the same reason

2 (a)(E)he can deal gently with the (F)ignorant and (G)misguided, since he himself also is (b)(H)beset with weakness;

2 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.

2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he is also subject to weakness.(A)

2 He can deal gently with people who are ignorant and easily deceived, since he himself is subject to weakness.

3 he is obliged to offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as for those of the people. besides, no man can assume

3 and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices (I)for sins, (J)as for the people, so also for himself.

3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.

3 Because of this, he must make a sin offering for himself as well as for the people.(B)

3 For that reason he is obligated to offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as for those of the people.

4 to himself the honour of the priesthood: he must be called thereto by God, as Aaron was.

4 And (K)no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even (L)as Aaron was.

4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

4 No one takes this honor on himself; instead, a person is called by God, just as Aaron was.(C)

4 No one takes this honor upon himself but he is called to it by God, just as Aaron was.

5 Wherefore Christ himself did not assume the character of an high priest; but it was confirm'd by him that said, "thou art my son, to-day have I begotten thee."

5 So also Christ (M)did not glorify Himself so as to become a (N)high priest, but He who (O)said to Him,(P)You are My Son,Today I have begotten You”;

5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

5 In the same way, the Messiah did not exalt Himself to become a high priest, but the One who said to Him, You are My Son; today I have become Your Father,(D)(b)

5 In the same way, the Messiah did not take upon himself the glory of being a high priest. No, it was God who said to him, "You are my Son. Today I have become your Father."

6 as he saith too in another place, "thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec."

6 just as He says also in another passage,(Q)You are a priest foreverAccording to (R)the order of Melchizedek.”

6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

7 this was Jesus, who while he was in a mortal body, having offered up prayers and supplications, with strong cries, and with tears, to him that was able to save him from that death, was heard so as to be delivered from his fear;

7 (c)In the days of His flesh, (d)(S)He offered up both prayers and supplications with (T)loud crying and tears to the One (U)able to save Him (e)from death, and He (f)was heard because of His (V)piety.

7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

7 During His earthly life,(d) He offered prayers and appeals(F) with loud cries and tears(G) to the One who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence.

7 As a mortal man, he offered up prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his devotion to God.

8 for tho' he was the son of God, yet he found by his own sufferings what it was to obey,

8 Although He was (W)a Son, He learned (X)obedience from the things which He suffered.

8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

8 Though He was God’s Son, He learned obedience through what He suffered.(H)

8 Son though he was, he learned obedience through his sufferings

9 and by a perfect obedience he procured eternal salvation for all that obey him;

9 And having been made (Y)perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,

9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

9 After He was perfected, He became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him,

9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him,

10 God having declared him an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

10 being designated by God as (Z)a high priest according to (AA)the order of Melchizedek.

Advanced Teaching Hindered By Immaturity

11 On this head we have many things to say, not easily to be comprehended, because of your prejudices.

11 Concerning (g)him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.

11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.

11 We have a great deal to say about this, and it’s difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to understand.

12 for though by this time you ought to be capable of teaching others, you want to be instructed anew in the first principles of the divine oracles; and are in such a state as to stand in need of milk, rather than of solid nourishment.

12 For though (h)by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you (AB)the (i)(AC)elementary principles of the (AD)oracles of God, and you have come to need (AE)milk and not solid food.

12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

12 Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God’s revelation again. You need milk, not solid food.(I)

12 In fact, though by now you should be teachers, you still need someone to teach you the basic truths of God's word. You have become people who need milk instead of solid food.

13 now he that is disciplined like a child, is not prepared for the doctrine of justification:

13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an (AF)infant.

13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

13 Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant.

13 For everyone who lives on milk is still a baby and does not yet know the difference between right and wrong.

14 such solid nourishment is only fit for such as are arriv'd at their full growth and strength, whose senses have been exercis'd in distinguishing what is good, and what is prejudicial.

14 But solid food is for (AG)the mature, who because of practice have their senses (AH)trained to (AI)discern good and evil.

14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

14 But solid food is for the mature—for those whose senses have been trained to distinguish between good and evil.(J)

14 But solid food is for mature people, whose minds are trained by practice to distinguish good from evil.
