4 And it shall be in that day, the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall become lean.

4 And in that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean.

4 Now in that day the (J)glory of Jacob will (f)fade,And (K)the fatness of his flesh will become lean.

4 On that daythe splendor of Jacob will fade, and his healthy body(a) will become emaciated.(D)

4 "At that time, Jacob's glory will have become weakened, and his strong flesh will turn gaunt;

5 And it shall be as reaping of the harvest grain, and his arm reaps the ears. And it shall be as he who gathers ears in the Valley of the Giants.

5 And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm; and it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of Rephaim.

5 It will be (L)even like the (g)reaper gathering the standing grain,As his arm harvests the ears,Or it will be like one gleaning ears of grainIn the (M)valley of Rephaim.

5 It will be as if a reaper had gathered standing grain—his arm harvesting the heads of grain—and as if one had gleaned heads of grainin the Valley of Rephaim.(E)

5 it will be as if harvesters gather standing grain, reaping the ears by hand, or it will be as if grain is harvested in the valley of Rephaim.

6 Yet gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an olive tree, two or three ripe olives in the top of the uppermost branch, four or five in the fruit-tree branches of it, says Jehovah, the God of Hosts.

6 Yet gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an olive tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the LORD God of Israel.

6 Yet (N)gleanings will be left in it like the (h)shaking of an olive tree,Two or three olives on the topmost bough,Four or five on the branches of a fruitful tree,Declares the Lord, the God of Israel.

6 Only gleanings will be left in Israel,(F)as if an olive tree had been beaten—two or three berries at the very top of the tree, four or five on its fruitful branches. This is the declaration of the Lord, the God of Israel.

6 Nevertheless, gleanings will remain in Israel, as when an olive tree is beaten two or three ripe olives left in the topmost branches, four or five left among the branches of a fruit-filled tree," declares the LORD God of Israel.

7 In that day a man shall look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel.

7 At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel.

7 In that day man will (O)have regard for his MakerAnd his eyes will look to the Holy One of Israel.

7 On that day people will look to their Maker and will turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.(G)

7 At that time, men will look upon their Maker, and their eyes will honor the Holy One of Israel.

8 And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, nor respect that which his fingers have made, either the Asherahs or the images.

8 And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images.

8 He will not have regard for the (P)altars, the work of his hands,Nor will he look to that which his (Q)fingers have made,Even the (i)(R)Asherim and (j)incense stands.

8 They will not look to the altars(H) they made with their hands or to the Asherahs and incense altars(I) they made with their fingers.

8 They will not look upon the altars, the products that their own fingers have made, and they will have no regard for Asherah poles or incense altars.

9 In that day his strong cities shall be like a forsaken branch, and an uppermost branch, which they left because of the sons of Israel; and it will become a ruin.

9 In that day shall his strong cities be as a forsaken bough, and an uppermost branch, which they left because of the children of Israel: and there shall be desolation.

9 In that day (k)their strong cities will be like (l)forsaken places in the forest,Or like (m)branches which they abandoned before the sons of Israel; And (n)the land will be a desolation.

9 On that day their strong cities will belike the abandoned woods and mountaintops(b)that were abandoned because of the Israelites;there will be desolation.

9 "At that time, their fortified cities that they abandoned because of the Israelis will be like desolate places of the forests and hilltops there will be desolation.

10 Because you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and have not been mindful of the Rock of your strength, therefore you shall plant pleasant plants and shall sow it a fresh shoot.

10 Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips:

10 For (S)you have forgotten the (T)God of your salvationAnd have not remembered the (U)rock of your refuge. Therefore you plant delightful plantsAnd set them with vine slips of a strange god.

10 For you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and you have failed to rememberthe rock of your strength;(J)therefore you will plant beautiful plantsand set out cuttings from exotic vines.

10 For you have forgotten the God of your salvation and have not remembered the Rock that is your strength. Therefore even though you plant delightful plants, sowing them with imported vine-seedlings,

11 In the day of your planting you fence it in; and in the morning you make your seed sprout. But the harvest shall be a heap in that day of grief and dying pain.

11 In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to flourish: but the harvest shall be a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.

11 In the day that you plant it you carefully fence it in,And in the (V)morning you bring your seed to blossom; But the harvest will (W)be a heapIn a day of sickliness and incurable pain.

11 On the day that you plant, you will help them to grow, and in the morningyou will help your seed to sprout, but the harvest will vanishon the day of disease and incurable pain.

11 at the time that you plant them, carefully making them grow, the very morning you make your seed to sprout, your harvest will be ruined in a time of grief and unbearable pain."

The Roar Of The Peoples

12 Woe to the multitude of many people, who make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations who make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!

12 Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations, that make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!

12 Alas, the uproar of many peoples(X)Who roar like the roaring of the seas,And the rumbling of nationsWho rush on like the (Y)rumbling of mighty waters!

12 Ah! The roar of many peoples—they roar like the roaring of the seas. The raging of the nations—they rage like the raging of mighty waters.(K)

12 "How terrible it will be for many nations, who rage like the roaring sea! Oh, how the uproar of nations is like the sound of rushing, mighty water How they roar!

13 The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters; but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased like the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.

13 The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.

13 The (Z)nations rumble on like the rumbling of many waters,But He will (AA)rebuke them and they will flee far away,And be chased (AB)like chaff in the mountains before the wind,Or like whirling dust before a gale.

13 The nations rage like the raging of many waters.(L)He rebukes them, and they flee far away,(M)driven before the wind like chaff on the hills(N)and like tumbleweeds before a gale.

13 The nations roar like the rushing of many waters, but the LORD will rebuke them, and they will run far away, chased like chaff blown down from the mountains or like thick dust that rolls along, blown along by a wind storm.

14 At evening time, behold, terror! Before the morning, he is not! This is the lot of those who plunder us, and the lot of those who rob us.

14 And behold at eveningtide trouble; and before the morning he is not. This is the portion of them that spoil us, and the lot of them that rob us.

14 At evening time, behold, there is terror! Before morning (AC)they are no more.(o)Such will be the portion of those who plunder usAnd the lot of those who pillage us.

14 In the evening—sudden terror! Before morning—it is gone! This is the fate of those who plunder usand the lot of those who ravage us.

14 When the evening arrives, watch out sudden terror! By morning they will be there no longer! So it will be for those who plunder us and what will happen to those who rob us."
