1 Behold, the Lord (A)lays the earth waste, devastates it, distorts its surface and scatters its inhabitants.
1 Look, the Lord is stripping the earth bareand making it desolate. He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants:
1 "Watch out! The LORD is about to depopulate the land and devastate it; he will turn it upside down and scatter its inhabitants.
2 And it shall be - As the people, so, the priest, As the servant, so his lord, As the maid, so, her mistress, - As the buyer, so, the seller, As the lender, so, the borrower, As the debtor, so! his creditor.
2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.
2 And the people will be like the priest, the servant like his master, the maid like her mistress, the buyer like the seller, the lender like the borrower, the (B)creditor like the debtor.
2 people and priest alike, servant and master, female servant and mistress, buyer and seller, lender and borrower, creditor and debtor.
2 It will be the same for the lay people as for priests, the same for servants as for their masters, for female servants as for their mistresses, for buyers as for sellers, for lenders as for borrowers, and for creditors as for debtors.

4 Mourneth, fadeth, the earth Languisheth, fadeth, the world, - Languished have the lofty of the people of the earth.
4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.
4 The (C)earth mourns and withers, the world fades and withers, the (D)exalted of the people of the earth fade away.
4 The earth mourns and withers;the world wastes away and withers;the exalted people of the earth waste away.
4 "The earth dries up and withers; the world languishes and fades away; heaven fades away, along with the earth.
5 Yea the earth itself is profaned under them who dwell therein, - For they have Set aside laws, Gone beyond statute, Broken an age-abiding covenant.
5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.
5 The earth is also (E)polluted (a)by its inhabitants, for they transgressed laws, violated statutes, (F)broke the everlasting covenant.
5 The earth is polluted by its inhabitants,(B)for they have transgressed teachings, overstepped decrees, and broken the everlasting covenant.(C)

6 For this cause, a curse, hath devoured the earth, And punished are the dwellers therein, - For this cause, are burned the inhabitants of the earth, And the men left remaining - are few.
6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.
6 Therefore, a (G)curse devours the earth, and those who live in it are held guilty. Therefore, the (H)inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men are left.
6 Therefore a curse has consumed the earth,(D)and its inhabitants have become guilty;the earth’s inhabitants have been burned, and only a few survive.
6 Therefore the curse keeps on consuming, and its inhabitants are declared guilty. Furthermore, the inhabitants of earth are ablaze, and few people are left.
8 Ceased hath the mirth of timbrels, Ended is the noise of the uproarious, - Ceased hath the mirth of the lyre:
8 The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.

9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.
9 They no longer sing and drink wine;beer is bitter to those who drink it.
9 No longer do they drink wine accompanied by singing; even beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.
11 There is an outcry concerning wine in the streets, - Darkened is all joy, Departed the gladness of the earth.
11 There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.
11 There is an (O)outcry in the streets concerning the wine;(P)All joy (b)turns to gloom. The gaiety of the earth is banished.

12 Only desolation remains in the city;its gate has collapsed in ruins.
12 Desolation remains in the city whose gates lie battered into ruins.
13 When, thus, it shall be in the earth in the midst of the peoples, There shall be like the shaking of an olive-tree, like the going round to pick when closed is the harvest.
13 When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done.
13 For (R)thus it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples,As the (c)shaking of an olive tree,As the gleanings when the grape harvest is over.
13 For this is how it will be on earthamong the nations:like a harvested olive tree, like a gleaning after a grape harvest.(I)
13 So it will be on the earth and among the nations as when an olive tree is beaten, or as gleanings when the grape harvest has ended."
14 They, shall lift up their voice - shall raise a tremulous note, - On account of the splendour of Yahweh, have they made a shrill cry, on the West;
14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD, they shall cry aloud from the sea.
14 (S)They raise their voices, they shout for joy; They cry out from the (d)west concerning the majesty of the Lord.

15 Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea.
15 Therefore (T)glorify the Lord in the (e)east,The (U)name of the Lord, the God of Israel,In the (f)(V)coastlands of the sea.
15 Therefore, in the east honor the Lord!In the islands of the westhonor the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel.

16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously.
16 From the (W)ends of the earth we hear songs, “(X)Glory to the Righteous One,”But I say, “(g)(Y)Woe to me! (h)Woe to me! Alas for me!The (Z)treacherous deal treacherously,And the treacherous deal very treacherously.”
16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs:The Splendor of the Righteous One.(J)But I said, “I waste away! I waste away!(b)Woe is me.”The treacherous act treacherously;the treacherous deal very treacherously.(K)

18 So shall it be - He that fleeth from the sound of the terror! shall fall into the pit, And I he that getteth up out of the midst of the pit, shall be captured in the snare, - For, the windows on high, have opened, And shaken are the foundations of earth.
18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.
18 Then it will be that he who flees the (j)report of disaster will fall into the pit,And he who (k)climbs out of the pit will be caught in the snare; For the (AB)windows (l)above are opened, and the (AC)foundations of the earth shake.
18 Whoever flees at the sound of panicwill fall into a pit,and whoever escapes from the pitwill be caught in a trap. For the windows are opened from heaven,(N)and the foundations of the earth are shaken.(O)
18 Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit, and whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. For the windows of judgment from above are opened, and the foundations of the earth are shaken.
19 The earth breaketh, breaketh, - The earth crasheth, crasheth, The earth tottereth, tottereth;
19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
19 The earth is completely devastated;the earth is split open;the earth is violently shaken.
19 The earth is utterly shattered, the earth is split apart, the earth is violently shaken.
20 The earth staggereth - staggereth like a drunken man, And rocketh to and fro like a night-hut, - So shall be heavy upon her, her transgression, And she shall fall and not again rise.
20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
20 The earth (AF)reels to and fro like a drunkardAnd it totters like a (m)shack,For its (AG)transgression is heavy upon it,And it will fall, (AH)never to rise again.

20 The earth reels to and fro like a drunkard; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies so heavy upon it, that it falls, never to rise again.
21 And it shall be in that day, That Yahweh will bring punishment Upon the host of the height in the height, - And upon the kings of the ground on the ground.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
21 So it will happen in that day,That the Lord will (AI)punish the host of (n)heaven on high,And the (AJ)kings of the earth on earth.
21 "And it will come about at that time, the LORD will punish the armies of the exalted ones in the heavens, and the rulers of the earth on earth.
22 And they shall be swept together in a crowd, fettered for a pit, And shall be lowered into a dungeon, - And, after many days, shall they be punished.
22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.

23 Then shall blush the silvery moon, Then turn pale the glowing sun, - Because Yahweh of hosts hath become king In Mount Zion And in Jerusalem, And before his Elders in glory,
23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.
23 Then the (AM)moon will be abashed and the sun ashamed,For the (AN)Lord of hosts will reign on (AO)Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,And His glory will be before His elders.
23 The moon will be put to shameand the sun disgraced, because the Lord of Hosts will reign as kingon Mount Zion in Jerusalem, and He will display His gloryin the presence of His elders.(T)
