1 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.
1 Look, the Lord is stripping the earth bareand making it desolate. He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants:
1 "Watch out! The LORD is about to depopulate the land and devastate it; he will turn it upside down and scatter its inhabitants.
1 Behold, the Lord will make the land and the earth empty and make it waste and turn it upside down (twist the face of it) and scatter abroad its inhabitants.
2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.
2 people and priest alike, servant and master, female servant and mistress, buyer and seller, lender and borrower, creditor and debtor.
2 It will be the same for the lay people as for priests, the same for servants as for their masters, for female servants as for their mistresses, for buyers as for sellers, for lenders as for borrowers, and for creditors as for debtors.
2 And it shall be -- "as [what happens] with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor.
3 The earth will be completely laid waste and completely despoiled, for the Lord has spoken this word.
3 The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word.
3 The earth will be utterly depopulated and completely laid waste for the LORD has spoken this message.
3 The land and the earth shall be utterly laid waste and utterly pillaged; for the Lord has said this.
4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.
4 The earth mourns and withers;the world wastes away and withers;the exalted people of the earth waste away.
4 "The earth dries up and withers; the world languishes and fades away; heaven fades away, along with the earth.
4 The land and the earth mourn and wither, the world languishes and withers, the high ones of the people [and the heavens with the earth] languish.
5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.
5 The earth lies defiled beneath its inhabitants; because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant.
5 The land and the earth also are defiled by their inhabitants, because they have transgressed the laws, disregarded the statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant.
6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.
6 Therefore the curse keeps on consuming, and its inhabitants are declared guilty. Furthermore, the inhabitants of earth are ablaze, and few people are left.
6 Therefore a curse devours the land and the earth, and they who dwell in it suffer the punishment of their guilt. Therefore the inhabitants of the land and the earth are scorched and parched [under the curse of God's wrath], and few people are left.
7 The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh.
7 The new wine evaporates; the vine and the oil dry up; all the merrymakers groan.
7 The new wine mourns, the vine languishes; all the merrymakers sigh.
8 The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.
8 "The celebrations of the tambourine have ended, the noise of the jubilant has stopped, and the mirth that the harp produces has ended.
8 The mirth of the timbrels is stilled, the noise of those who rejoice ends, the joy of the lyre is stopped.
9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.
9 They no longer sing and drink wine;beer is bitter to those who drink it.
9 No longer do they drink wine accompanied by singing; even beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.
9 No more will they drink wine with a song; strong drink will be bitter to those who drink it.
10 The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in.
10 The chaotic city lies broken down; every house is closed up so that no one can enter them.
10 The wasted city of emptiness and confusion is broken down; every house is shut up so that no one may enter.
11 There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.
11 There is an outcry in the streets over wine; all cheer turns to gloom; the fun times of the earth are banished.
11 There is crying in the streets for wine; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is banished and gone into captivity.
12 In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction.
12 Only desolation remains in the city;its gate has collapsed in ruins.
12 Desolation remains in the city whose gates lie battered into ruins.
12 In the city is left desolation, and its gate is battered and destroyed.
13 When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done.
13 So it will be on the earth and among the nations as when an olive tree is beaten, or as gleanings when the grape harvest has ended."
13 For so shall it be in the midst of the earth among the peoples, as the shaking and beating of an olive tree, or as the gleaning when the vintage is done [and only a small amount of the fruit remains].
14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD, they shall cry aloud from the sea.
14 They raise their voices, they sing out;they proclaim in the westthe majesty of the Lord.
14 "They raise their voices; they shout for joy; from the west they shout aloud over the LORD's majesty.
14 [But] these [who have escaped and remain] lift up their voices, they shout; for the majesty of the Lord they cry aloud from the [Mediterranean] Sea.
15 Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea.
15 Therefore, in the east honor the Lord!In the islands of the westhonor the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel.
15 Therefore, you in the east, give glory to the LORD! You in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the LORD God of Israel!
15 Wherefore glorify the Lord in the east [whether in the region of daybreak's lights and fires, or in the west]; [glorify] the name of the Lord, the God of Israel in the isles and coasts of the [Mediterranean] Sea.
16 From the (W)ends of the earth we hear songs, “(X)Glory to the Righteous One,”But I say, “(g)(Y)Woe to me! (h)Woe to me! Alas for me!The (Z)treacherous deal treacherously,And the treacherous deal very treacherously.”
16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously.
16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs:The Splendor of the Righteous One.(J)But I said, “I waste away! I waste away!(b)Woe is me.”The treacherous act treacherously;the treacherous deal very treacherously.(K)
16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise: "Glory to the Righteous One!' "But I say, "I am pining away, I'm pining away. How terrible things are for me! For treacherous people betray treacherous people are betraying with treachery!'"
16 From the uttermost parts of the earth have we heard songs: Glory to the Righteous One [and to the people of Israel]! But I say, Emaciated I pine away, I pine away. Woe is me! The treacherous dealers deal treacherously! Yes, the treacherous dealers deal very treacherously.
17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.
17 "Terror and pit and snare are coming in your direction, you inhabitants of the earth!
17 Terror and pit [of destruction] and snare are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth!
18 Then it will be that he who flees the (j)report of disaster will fall into the pit,And he who (k)climbs out of the pit will be caught in the snare; For the (AB)windows (l)above are opened, and the (AC)foundations of the earth shake.
18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.
18 Whoever flees at the sound of panicwill fall into a pit,and whoever escapes from the pitwill be caught in a trap. For the windows are opened from heaven,(N)and the foundations of the earth are shaken.(O)
18 Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit, and whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. For the windows of judgment from above are opened, and the foundations of the earth are shaken.
18 And he who flees at the noise of the terror will fall into the pit; and he who comes up out of the pit will be caught in the snare. For the windows of the heavens are opened [as in the deluge], and the foundations of the earth tremble and shake.
19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
19 The earth is completely devastated;the earth is split open;the earth is violently shaken.
19 The earth is utterly shattered, the earth is split apart, the earth is violently shaken.
19 The earth is utterly broken, the earth is rent asunder, the earth is shaken violently.
20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
20 The earth reels to and fro like a drunkard; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies so heavy upon it, that it falls, never to rise again.
20 The earth shall stagger like a drunken man and shall sway to and fro like a hammock; its transgression shall lie heavily upon it, and it shall fall and not rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
21 "And it will come about at that time, the LORD will punish the armies of the exalted ones in the heavens, and the rulers of the earth on earth.
21 And in that day the Lord will visit and punish the host of the high ones on high [the host of heaven in heaven, celestial beings] and the kings of the earth on the earth.
22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.
22 They will be herded together into the Pit; they will be shut up in prison, and after many days they will be punished.
22 And they will be gathered together as prisoners are gathered in a pit or dungeon; they will be shut up in prison, and after many days they will be visited, inspected, and punished or pardoned.
23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.
23 Then the moon will be embarrassed and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of the Heavenly Armies will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem; and in the presence of its elders there will be glory."
23 Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, when [they compare their ineffectual fire to the light of] the Lord of hosts, Who will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before His elders will show forth His glory.
