1 Observe this: The Lord God of Hostsis about to remove from Jerusalem and from Judahevery kind of security:the entire supply of bread and water,
1 "Note this! The Lord GOD of the Heavenly Armies is taking away from Jerusalem and Judah everything that your society needs all food supplies and all water supplies,
1 Listen carefully, the Lord God of hosts is removing from Jerusalem and from JudahBoth supply and support, the whole supply of breadAnd the whole supply of water;

2 the mighty man and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the fortune-teller and the elder,
2 The brave man and the warrior [He is also removing],The judge and the prophet,The diviner and the elder,
3 The captain of fifty and the honorable man,The counselor and the expert artisan,And the skillful enchanter.
3 The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counseller, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator.
3 the commander of fifty and the man of rank, and the counselor, the expert magician, and the medium.
3 The captain of fifty and the man of honor,The counselor and the expert artisan,And the skillful enchanter.
4 And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.
4 "I will make youths their princes, and infants will rule over them.
4 And I will make mere boys their princes,And capricious (impulsive, unpredictable) children will rule over them.
5 And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.
5 People will oppress one another It will be man against man and neighbor against neighbor. The young will be disrespectful to the old, and the worthless to the honorable.
5 And the people will be oppressed,Each one by another, and each one by his neighbor; The boy will be arrogant and insolent toward the elderAnd the vulgar (common) toward the honorable [person of rank].
6 When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand:
6 A man will even seize his brotherin his father’s house, saying:“You have a cloak—you be our leader! This heap of rubble will be under your control.”
6 "For a man will grab his brother in his own father's house, and say, "You have a cloak, so you be our leader, and this heap of ruins will be under your rule!'
6 When a man takes hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying,“You have a robe, you shall be our judge and ruler,And this pile of ruins will be under your control,”
7 In that day shall he swear, saying, I will not be an healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people.
7 On that day he will cry out, saying:“I’m not a healer.I don’t even have food or clothing in my house.Don’t make me the leader of the people!”
7 "But at that time, he'll protest! He'll say, "I won't be your healer. I have neither food nor clothing in my house! You're not going to make me a leader of the people!'
8 For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.
8 "For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because what they say and do opposes the LORD; they keep defying him.
8 For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen,Because their words and their actions are against the Lord,To rebel against His glorious presence and defiantly provoke Him.
9 The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.
9 "The expressions on their faces give them away. They parade their sin around like Sodom; they don't even try to hide it. How horrible it will be for them, because they have brought disaster on themselves!"
10 Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.
10 Tell the righteous that it will go well for them, for they will eat the fruit of their labor.
10 "Tell the righteous that things will go well, because they will enjoy the fruit of their actions."
10 Say to the righteous that it will go well with them,For they will eat the fruit of their [righteous] actions.
11 Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.
11 Woe to the wicked—it will go badly for them, for what they have done will be done to them.
11 "How terrible it will be for the wicked! Disaster is headed their way, because what they did with their hand will be repaid to them.
11 Woe (judgment is coming) to the wicked! It shall go badly with him,For what his hand has done shall be done to him.
12 As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.
12 "As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. My people, your leaders are misleading you they're giving you confusing directions."
12 O My people! Children are their oppressors,And women rule over them.O My people! Your leaders lead you astrayAnd confuse (destroy, swallow up) the direction of your paths.
13 The LORD standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people.
13 The LORD is taking his place to argue his case; he's standing up to judge the people.
13 The Lord rises to contend,And stands to judge the people.
14 The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.
14 The LORD will go to court to oppose the elders and princes of his people: "You're the ones who have been devouring the vineyard, the plunder of the poor is in your own houses!
14 The Lord enters into judgment with the elders of His people and their princes,“For it is you who have devoured the vineyard [with your oppression, you have robbed the people and ruined the country];The plunder of the poor is in your houses.
15 What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
15 Why do you crush My peopleand grind the faces of the poor?”This is the declarationof the Lord God of Hosts.
15 How dare you crush my people as you grind down the face of the poor?" declares the Lord GOD of the Heavenly Armies.
15 “What do you mean by crushing My peopleAnd grinding the face of the poor?”Declares the Lord God of hosts.
16 Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:
16 The LORD also says: "Because Zion's women are so haughty, and walk with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, prancing along as they walk, and making tinkling noises with their ankle bracelets,
17 Therefore the Lord will afflict the scalp of the daughters of Zion with scabs,And the Lord will make their foreheads bare.”
17 Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their secret parts.
17 the Lord will put scabs on the headsof the daughters of Zion, and the Lord will shave their foreheads bare.
17 therefore the LORD will afflict sores on the heads of Zion's women, and the LORD will expose their private parts.
17 Therefore the Lord will afflict the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion with scabs [making them bald],And the Lord will expose their foreheads (send them into captivity).”
18 In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon,
18 "At that time, the LORD will take away the finery of the ankle bracelets, headbands, crescents,
18 In that day the Lord will take away the beauty of their anklets, [braided] caps, crescent [head] ornaments,
20 The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings,
20 headdresses, armlets, sashes, perfume boxes, charms,
20 head wraps (turbans), [short, jingling] ankle chains, sashes, perfume boxes, amulets (charms),
23 hand mirrors, undergarments, turbans and veils.
23 The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the vails.
23 garments, linen clothes, turbans, and veils.
23 mirrors, linen garments, tiaras, and veils.
23 hand mirrors, [fine linen] undergarments, headbands, and veils [covering the entire body].
24 Now it will come about that instead of (r)sweet (Z)perfume there will be putrefaction;Instead of a belt, a rope;Instead of (AA)well-set hair, a (AB)plucked-out scalp;Instead of fine clothes, a (AC)donning of sackcloth; And branding instead of beauty.
24 And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.
24 "And it will come about that instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of well-set hair, baldness; instead of a fine robe, sackcloth; and instead of beauty, shame.
24 Now it will come to pass that instead of the sweet fragrance of spices there will be [the stench of] rottenness;Instead of a belt, a rope;Instead of well-set hair, baldness;Instead of fine clothes, a robe of sackcloth; And branding [of captives by the scorching heat] instead of beauty.
25 Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.
25 Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle.
25 Your men will die violently, while your forces fall in battle
25 Your men will fall by the swordAnd your mighty men in battle.
26 And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground.
26 and her gates lament and mourn. Ravaged, she will sit on the ground."
26 And Jerusalem’s gates will lament (cry out in grief) and mourn [as those who wail for the dead];And she, being ruined and desolate, will sit upon the ground.
