1 The gloom will be dispelled for those who were anxious. In earlier times he humiliated the land of Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali; but now he brings honor to the way of the sea, the region beyond the Jordan, and Galilee of the nations.
1 (a)But there will be no more (A)gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He (B)treated the (C)land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the (b)Gentiles.
1 Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.
1 (a)Nevertheless, the gloom of the distressed land will not be like that of the former times when He humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali.(A) But in the future He will bring honor to the Way of the Sea, to the land east of the Jordan, and to Galilee of the nations.
1 But there will be no gloom for her who was in distress. Formerly, he brought contempt to the region of Zebulun and the region of Naphtali, but in the future he will have made glorious the way of the sea, the territory beyond the Jordan Galilee of the nations.
2 The people walking in darkness see a bright light; light shines on those who live in a land of deep darkness.
2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.
2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; for those living in a land of deep darkness, a light has shined upon them.
3 You have enlarged the nation; you give them great joy. They rejoice in your presence as harvesters rejoice; as warriors celebrate when they divide up the plunder.
3 Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
3 You have increased the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice in your presence as they rejoice at the harvest, as they are glad when they're dividing the spoils of war.
4 For their oppressive yoke and the club that strikes their shoulders, the cudgel the oppressor uses on them, you have shattered, as in the day of Midian's defeat.
4 For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.
4 Now as to the yoke that has been his burden, and the bar laid on his shoulder the rod of his oppressor you have broken it as on the day of Midian.
5 Indeed every boot that marches and shakes the earth and every garment dragged through blood is used as fuel for the fire.
5 For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult,And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
5 For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.
5 For the trampling boot of battleand the bloodied garments of warwill be burned as fuel for the fire.
5 For every boot of the tramping soldier in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be used for burning as fuel for a fire.
6 For a child has been born to us, a son has been given to us. He shoulders responsibility and is called: Extraordinary Strategist, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name is called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 His dominion will be vast and he will bring immeasurable prosperity. He will rule on David's throne and over David's kingdom, establishing it and strengthening it by promoting justice and fairness, from this time forward and forevermore. The Lord's intense devotion to his people will accomplish this.
7 There will be (S)no end to the increase of His government or of peace,On the (T)throne of David and over his kingdom,To establish it and to uphold it with (U)justice and righteousnessFrom then on and forevermore.(V)The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.
7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
7 The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end.(N)He will reign on the throne of Davidand over his kingdom,to establish and sustain itwith justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will accomplish this.(O)
7 Of the growth of his government and peace there will be no end. He will rule over his kingdom, sitting on the throne of David, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of the Heavenly Armies will accomplish this.
8 The sovereign master decreed judgment on Jacob, and it fell on Israel.
8 The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.
8 The Lord sent a message against Jacob;it came against Israel.
8 "The LORD has sent a plague against Jacob, and it will fall on Israel;
9 All the people were aware of it, the people of Ephraim and those living in Samaria. Yet with pride and an arrogant attitude, they said,
9 And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutness of heart,
9 and all of the people were evil Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria saying proudly with arrogant hearts:
10 "The bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with chiseled stone; the sycamore fig trees have been cut down, but we will replace them with cedars."
10 The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars.
10 “The bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with cut stones;the sycamores have been cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.”
10 "The bricks have fallen, but we will build with dressed stones; the sycamore trees have been cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.'
11 Then the Lord provoked their adversaries to attack them, he stirred up their enemies --
11 Therefore the LORD shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and join his enemies together;
11 The Lord has raised up Rezin’s adversaries against himand stirred up his enemies.
11 But the LORD has raised adversaries from Rezin against him, and he stirs up his enemies
12 Syria from the east, and the Philistines from the west, they gobbled up Israelite territory. Despite all this, his anger does not subside, and his hand is ready to strike again.
12 The Arameans on the east and the (AA)Philistines on the west; And they (AB)devour Israel with (k)gaping jaws.(AC)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn awayAnd His hand is still stretched out.
12 The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
12 Arameans from the east and Philistines from the west and they devour Israel with open mouths! "Yet for all this, his anger has not turned away, and his hand is still stretched out, ready to strike."
13 The people did not return to the one who struck them, they did not seek reconciliation with the Lord who commands armies.
13 For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the LORD of hosts.
13 The people did not turn to Him who struck them;they did not seek the Lord of Hosts.
13 "But the people have not returned to rely on him who struck them, nor have they sought the LORD of the Heavenly Armies.
14 So the Lord cut off Israel's head and tail, both the shoots and stalk in one day.
14 Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day.
14 So the LORD has cut off from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed in a single day
15 The leaders and the highly respected people are the head, the prophets who teach lies are the tail.
15 The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.
15 the elder and the dignitary is the head, and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail.
16 The leaders of this nation were misleading people, and the people being led were destroyed.
16 For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.
16 For those who guide this people have been leading them astray, and those who are guided by them are swallowed up.
17 So the sovereign master was not pleased with their young men, he took no pity on their orphans and widows; for the whole nation was godless and did wicked things, every mouth was speaking disgraceful words. Despite all this, his anger does not subside, and his hand is ready to strike again.
17 Therefore the Lord does (AK)not take pleasure in their young men,(AL)Nor does He have pity on their (m)orphans or their widows; For every one of them is (AM)godless and an (AN)evildoer,And every (AO)mouth is speaking foolishness.(AP)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn awayAnd His hand is still stretched out.
17 Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
17 Therefore the Lord does not rejoiceover(e) Israel’s young menand has no compassionon its fatherless and widows, for everyone is a godless evildoer,(U)and every mouth speaks folly. In all this, His anger is not removed, and His hand is still raised to strike.
17 Therefore the Lord does not have pity on their young men, and has no compassion on their orphans and widows, because each of them was godless and an evildoer, and every mouth spoke folly. "Yet for all this, his anger has not turned away, and his hand is still stretched out, ready to strike.
18 For evil burned like a fire, it consumed thorns and briers; it burned up the thickets of the forest, and they went up in smoke.
18 For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.
18 "For wickedness has burned like a blaze that consumes briers and thorns; it sets thickets of the forest on fire, and skyward they swirl in a column of smoke.
19 Because of the anger of the Lord who commands armies, the land was scorched, and the people became fuel for the fire. People had no compassion on one another.
19 Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother.
19 From the wrath of the LORD of the Heavenly Armies the land has been scorched, and the people have become like fuel for the fire; no one will spare his neighbor.
20 They devoured on the right, but were still hungry, they ate on the left, but were not satisfied. People even ate the flesh of their own arm!
20 And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:
20 They cut meat on the right, but they're still hungry, and they devour also on the left, but they're not satisfied; each devours the flesh of his own children.
21 Manasseh fought against Ephraim, and Ephraim against Manasseh; together they fought against Judah. Despite all this, his anger does not subside, and his hand is ready to strike again.
21 Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
21 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim devours Manasseh; together they are against Judah. "Yet for all this, his anger has not turned away, and his hand is still stretched out, ready to strike."
