Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.
Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring
innocent blood on yourselves, and on this city and on its inhabitants; for truly the Lord has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing.”
Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the
cistern of Malchijah the king’s son, which was in the court of the guardhouse; and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. Now in the cistern there was no water but only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.
But the son of Paul’s sister heard of their ambush,
and he came and entered the barracks and told Paul.
But Paul said, “I am standing before Caesar’s
tribunal, where I ought to be tried. I have done no wrong to the Jews, as you also very well know.
And when they had
examined me, they were willing to release me because there was no ground for putting me to death.
then you are to say to them, ‘I was
presenting my petition before the king, not to make me return to the house of Jonathan to die there.’”
