Jeremiah's Proclamation At The Gate Of The House Of Yahweh

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord:

1 The message that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:

2 “Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house and proclaim there this word and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah who enter by these gates to worship the Lord.’”

2 Stand in the gate of the LORD'S house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the LORD, all ye of Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship the LORD.

2 (A)Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house and proclaim there this word and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah, who enter by these gates to worship the Lord!’”

2 “Stand in the gate of the house of the Lord(A) and there call out this word: Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who enter through these gates to worship the Lord.

2 "Stand at the gate of the LORD's Temple and proclaim this message there. Say, "Listen to this message from the LORD, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the LORD.'"

3 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Change your ways and your behavior, and I will let you live in this place.

3 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.

3 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “(B)Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place.

3 “This is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Correct your ways and your deeds,(B) and I will allow you to live in this place.

3 This is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, the God of Israel, says:

4 Do not trust in the deceptive and lying words [of the false prophets who claim that Jerusalem will be protected by God because of the temple], saying, ‘This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.’

4 Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these.

4 (C)Do not trust in deceptive words, saying, ‘(a)This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.’

4 Do not trust deceitful words, chanting: This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.

4 "Change your ways and your deeds, and I'll let you live in this place. Don't trust deceptive words like these, and say, "The Temple of the LORD, the Temple of the LORD, the Temple of the LORD,'

5 For if you thoroughly change your ways and your behavior, if you thoroughly and honestly practice justice between a man and his neighbor,

5 For if ye throughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour;

5 For (D)if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly (E)practice justice between a man and his neighbor,

5 Instead, if you really change your ways and your actions, if you act justly toward one another,(a)(C)

5 but rather, truly change your ways and your deeds. If you truly practice justice between each person and his neighbor,

6 if you do not oppress the transient and the foreigner, the orphan, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood [by oppression and by unjust judicial murders] in Jerusalem, nor follow after other gods to your own ruin,

6 If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt:

6 if you do not oppress the alien, the (b)(F)orphan, or the widow, and do not shed (G)innocent blood in this place, nor (H)walk after other gods to your own ruin,

6 if you no longer oppress the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow(D) and no longer shed innocent blood in this place or follow other gods, bringing harm on yourselves,

6 and if you don't oppress the alien, the orphan, and the widow, and don't shed an innocent person's blood in this place, and if you don't follow other gods to your own harm,

7 then I will let you live in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers [to live in] forever and ever.

7 Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever.

7 then I will let you (I)dwell in this place, in the (J)land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever.

7 I will allow you to live in this place, the land I gave to your ancestors(E) long ago and forever.

7 then I'll let you dwell in this land, the land that I gave to your ancestors forever and ever.

8 “Behold, you are trusting in deceptive and useless words that bring no benefit.

8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.

8 “Behold, you are trusting in (K)deceptive words to no avail.

8 But look, you keep trusting in deceitful words that cannot help.

8 "Look, you're trusting in deceptive words that cannot benefit.

9 Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear [oaths] falsely, offer sacrifices or burn incense to Baal, and follow after other gods that you have not known,

9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;

9 Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery and swear falsely, and (c)(L)offer sacrifices to Baal and walk after (M)other gods that you have not known,

9 “Do you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and follow other gods that you have not known?(F)

9 Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear by false gods, burn incense to Baal, follow other gods that you don't know,

10 and [then dare to] come and stand before Me in this house, which is called by My (a)Name, and say, ‘We are protected and set free [by this act of religious ritual]!’—only to go on with this wickedness and these disgusting and loathsome things?

10 And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?

10 then (N)come and stand before Me in (O)this house, which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’—that you may do all these abominations?

10 Then do you come and stand before Me in this house(G) called by My name and say, ‘We are delivered, so we can continue doing all these detestable acts’?

10 and then come to stand before me in this house that is called by my name and say, "We're delivered' so we can continue to do all these things that are repugnant to God?

11 Has this house, which is called by My Name, become a den of robbers in your eyes [a place of retreat for you between acts of violence]? Behold, I Myself have seen it,” says the Lord.

11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD.

11 Has (P)this house, which is called by My name, become a (Q)den of robbers in your sight? Behold, (R)I, even I, have seen it,” declares the Lord.

11 Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of robbers(H) in your view? Yes, I too have seen it.”(I)This is the Lord’s declaration.

11 Has this house that is called by my name become a hideout for bandits in your eyes? Look, I'm watching," declares the LORD.

Shiloh As A Warning

12 “But go now to My place which was in Shiloh [in Ephraim], where I first set My Name, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of My people Israel.(A)

12 But go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel.

12 “But go now to My place which was in (S)Shiloh, where I (T)made My name dwell at the first, and (U)see what I did to it because of the wickedness of My people Israel.

12 “But return to My place that was at Shiloh, where I made My name dwell at first.(J) See what I did to it because of the evil of My people Israel.

12 "Go to my place that was in Shiloh, where I first caused my name to dwell. See what I did to it because of the evil of my people Israel.

13 And now, because you have done all these things,” says the Lord, “and I spoke [persistently] to you, even rising up early and speaking, but you did not listen, and I called you but you did not answer,

13 And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the LORD, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not;

13 And now, because you have done all these things,” declares the Lord, “and I spoke to you, (V)rising up early and (W)speaking, but you did not hear, and I (X)called you but you did not answer,

13 Now, because you have done all these things”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“and because I have spoken to you time and time again(b) but you wouldn’t listen,(K) and I have called to you, but you wouldn’t answer,(L)

13 Now, because you have done all these things," declares the LORD, "I spoke to you over and over again, but you didn't listen. I called to you, but you didn't answer.

14 therefore, I will do to this house (the temple) which is called by My Name, in which you trust, and to the place which I gave you and your fathers, just as I did to Shiloh.

14 Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.

14 therefore, I will do to the (Y)house which is called by My name, (Z)in which you trust, and to the place which I gave you and your fathers, as I (AA)did to Shiloh.

14 what I did to Shiloh I will do to the house that is called by My name(M)—the house in which you trust—the place that I gave you and your ancestors.

14 Just as I did to Shiloh, I'll do to the house in which you trust and which is called by my name, the place that I gave to you and your ancestors.

15 I will cast you out of My sight, as I have cast out all your brothers (relatives through Jacob), all the descendants of Ephraim.

15 And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, even the whole seed of Ephraim.

15 I will (AB)cast you out of My sight, as I have cast out all your brothers, all the (d)offspring of (AC)Ephraim.

15 I will drive you from My presence, just as I drove out all of your brothers, all the descendants of Ephraim.(N)

15 I'll cast you out of my sight, just as I cast out all your brothers, all the descendants of Ephraim.

Do Not Pray For Judah

16 “Therefore, do not pray for this people [of Judah] or lift up a cry or entreaty for them or make intercession to Me, for I do not hear you.

16 Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee.

16 “As for you, (AD)do not pray for this people, and do not lift up cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with Me; for I do not hear you.

16 “As for you, do not pray for these people.(O) Do not offer a cry or a prayer on their behalf, and do not beg Me,(P) for I will not listen to you.(Q)

16 "As for you, don't pray on behalf of this people, don't cry or offer a petition for them, and don't plead with me, for I won't listen to you.

17 Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

17 Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

17 Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

17 Don’t you see how they behave in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

17 Don't you see what they're doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

18 The children gather wood, the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead the dough to make cakes for the (b)queen of heaven; and they pour out drink offerings to other gods that they may offend and provoke Me to anger.

18 The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.

18 The (e)children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough to make cakes for the queen of heaven; and they (AE)pour out drink offerings to other gods in order to (AF)spite Me.

18 The sons gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead dough to make cakes for the queen of heaven,(c)(R) and they pour out drink offerings to other gods so that they provoke Me to anger.

18 The children gather wood, the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough to make cakes for the Queen of Heaven, and they pour out liquid offerings to other gods in order to provoke me.

19 Do they offend and provoke Me to anger?” says the Lord. “Is it not themselves [they offend], to their own shame?”

19 Do they provoke me to anger? saith the LORD: do they not provoke themselves to the confusion of their own faces?

19 (AG)Do they spite Me?” declares the Lord. “Is it not themselves they spite, to (f)their own (AH)shame?”

19 But are they really provoking Me?”(S) This is the Lord’s declaration. “Isn’t it they themselves being provoked to disgrace?”

19 Are they provoking me?" asks the LORD. "Is it not themselves, and to their own shame?"

20 Therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, My anger and My wrath will be poured out on this place, on man and beast, on the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; and it will burn and [the fire will] not be quenched.”

20 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, mine anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched.

20 Therefore thus says the Lord (g)God, “Behold, My (AI)anger and My wrath will be poured out on this place, on man and on beast and on the (AJ)trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground; and it will burn and not be quenched.”

20 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: “Look, My anger—My burning wrath—is about to be poured out on this place,(T) on man and beast, on the tree of the field, and on the produce of the land. My wrath will burn and not be quenched.”(U)

20 Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says: "I'm about to pour out my anger and my wrath on this place, on people and animals, on the trees of the field, and on the fruit of the ground. It will burn, and it won't be put out."

Obedience Over Sacrifice

21 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices and eat the meat.

21 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.

21 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Add your (AK)burnt offerings to your sacrifices and (AL)eat flesh.

21 This is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices, and eat the meat yourselves,(V)

21 This is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, the God of Israel, says:

22 For in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers or command them concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices.

22 For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:

22 For I did not (AM)speak to your fathers, or command them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices.

22 for when I brought your ancestors out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak with them(W) or command them concerning burnt offering and sacrifice.

22 "Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices and eat the meat. Indeed, when I brought your ancestors out of the land of Egypt, I didn't speak or command them about burnt offering and sacrifice,

23 But this thing I did command them: ‘Listen to and obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people; and you will walk in all the way which I command you, so that it may be well with you.’

23 But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.

23 But this is (h)what I commanded them, saying, ‘(AN)Obey My voice, and (AO)I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you will walk in all the way which I command you, that it may (AP)be well with you.’

23 However, I did give them this command: Obey Me, and then I will be your God, and you will be My people. You must follow every way I command you so that it may go well with you.(X)

23 but I did give them this command: "Obey me and I'll be your God, and you will be my people. Walk in all the ways that I command you so it will go well for you.'

24 But they did not obey Me or bend their ear [to hear Me], but followed the counsels and the stubbornness of their [own] evil heart (mind), and [they turned and] went backward instead of forward.

24 But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.

24 Yet they (AQ)did not obey or incline their ear, but walked in their own counsels and in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and (i)(AR)went backward and not forward.

24 Yet they didn’t listen or pay attention(Y) but followed their own advice and according to their own stubborn, evil heart. They went backward and not forward.(Z)

24 But they didn't listen, nor did they pay attention. They pursued their own plans, stubbornly following their own evil desires. They went backward and not forward.

25 Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have [persistently] sent you all My servants the prophets, sending them daily, early [and late].

25 Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day I have even sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them:

25 Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have (AS)sent you all My servants the prophets, daily rising early and sending them.

25 Since the day your ancestors came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have sent all My servants the prophets(AA) to you time and time again.(d)(AB)

25 From the day your ancestors left the land of Egypt to this present time, I've sent all my servants, the prophets, to you, again and again.

26 Yet they did not listen to Me and obey Me or bend their ear [to hear Me], but stiffened their neck; they did more evil and behaved worse than their fathers.

26 Yet they hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but hardened their neck: they did worse than their fathers.

26 Yet they did not listen to Me or incline their ear, but (AT)stiffened their neck; they (AU)did more evil than their fathers.

26 However, they wouldn’t listen to Me or pay attention but became obstinate;(e)(AC) they did more evil than their ancestors.(AD)

26 But they didn't listen to me, and they didn't pay attention. They stiffened their necks, and they did more evil than their ancestors.

A Lament For Disobedient Judah

27 “You shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you; and you shall [also] call to them, but they will not answer you.

27 Therefore thou shalt speak all these words unto them; but they will not hearken to thee: thou shalt also call unto them; but they will not answer thee.

27 “You shall (AV)speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you; and you shall call to them, but they will (AW)not answer you.

27 “When you speak all these things to them, they will not listen to you. When you call to them, they will not answer you.

27 "You will tell them all these things, but they won't listen to you. You will call out to them, but they won't answer you.

The Valley Of The Slaughter

28 You shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God or accept correction and warning; truth and faithfulness have perished and have completely vanished from their mouths.

28 But thou shalt say unto them, This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the LORD their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.

28 You shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that (AX)did not obey the voice of the Lord their God or accept correction; (j)(AY)truth has perished and has been cut off from their mouth.

28 You must therefore declare to them: This is the nation that would not listen to the voice of the Lord their God and would not accept discipline. Truth(f) has perished—it has disappeared from their mouths.

28 You will say to them, "This is the nation that wouldn't listen to the voice of the LORD its God and wouldn't accept correction. Truth has perished; it has been eliminated from their discussions.'

The Valley Of Killing

29 ‘Cut off your hair [your crown, O Jerusalem] and throw it away,And take up a mournful cry on the barren heights,For the Lord has rejected and abandonedThe generation of His wrath.’

29 Cut off thine hair, O Jerusalem, and cast it away, and take up a lamentation on high places; for the LORD hath rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.

29 (AZ)Cut off (k)your hair and cast it away,And (BA)take up a lamentation on the bare heights; For the Lord has (BB)rejected and forsakenThe generation of His wrath.’

29 Cut off the hair of your sacred vow(g)(AE) and throw it away. Raise up a dirge on the barren heights,(AF) for the Lord has rejected and abandoned the generation under His wrath.(AG)

29 "Cut off your hair and throw it away; let your lamentations rise on the barren heights, because the LORD has rejected and abandoned the generation that is subject to his wrath.

30 For the children of Judah have done evil in My sight,” says the Lord; “they have set their disgusting and shamefully vile things in the house which is called by My Name, to defile it.

30 For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, saith the LORD: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to pollute it.

30 For the sons of Judah have done that which is evil in My sight,” declares the Lord, “they have (BC)set their detestable things in the house which is called by My name, to defile it.

30 “For the Judeans have done what is evil in My sight.” This is the Lord’s declaration. “They have set up their detestable things(AH) in the house that is called by My name and defiled it.(AI)

30 "For the people of Judah have done evil in my eyes," declares the LORD. "They have put their detestable idols in the house that is called by my name in order to defile it.

31 They have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the Valley of Ben-hinnom (son of Hinnom), to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire [to honor Molech, the fire god]—which I did not command, nor did it come into My heart (mind).(B)

31 And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.

31 They have (BD)built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to (BE)burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I (BF)did not command, and it did not come into My (l)mind.

31 They have built the high places of Topheth(h)(AJ) in the Valley of Hinnom(i)(AK) in order to burn their sons and daughters in the fire,(AL) a thing I did not command; I never entertained the thought.(j)

31 They have built high places at Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom to burn their sons and daughters in the fire. I didn't command this, and it never entered my mind!

32 “Therefore, behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when it will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben-hinnom, but the Valley of the Slaughter, for [in bloody warfare] they will bury [the dead] in Topheth until there is no more room.(C)

32 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be called Tophet, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter: for they shall bury in Tophet, till there be no place.

32 (BG)Therefore, behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when it will no longer be called Topheth, or the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of the Slaughter; for they will (BH)bury in Topheth (m)because there is no other place.

32 “Therefore, take note! Days are coming”(AM)—the Lord’s declaration—“when this place will no longer be called Topheth and the Valley of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.(AN) Topheth will become a cemetery,(k) because there will be no other burial place.

32 "Therefore, the time is near," declares the LORD, "when it will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben-hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter. They'll bury in Topheth because there is no other place to do it.

33 And the dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth and no one will frighten them away.

33 And the carcases of this people shall be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall fray them away.

33 The (BI)dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the sky and for the beasts of the earth; and no one will frighten them away.

33 The corpses of these people will become food for the birds of the sky and for the wild animals of the land, with no one to scare them away.(AO)

33 The dead bodies of these people will be food for the birds of the sky and for the animals of the land, and no one will disturb them.

34 Then I will cause the voices of joy and gladness, and the voices of the bridegroom and the bride to vanish from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem; for the land will become a ruin—a wasteland.

34 Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride: for the land shall be desolate.

34 Then I will make to (BJ)cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride; for the (BK)land will become a ruin.

34 I will remove from the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem the sound of joy and gladness and the voices of the groom and the bride,(AP) for the land will become a desolate waste.(AQ)

34 In the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem I'll bring an end to the sound of gladness and rejoicing, to the sounds of the bridegroom and bride, for the land will become a wasteland."
