Job's Character And Greatness
1 A man as in the land of Uz, Job his name; and that man was blameless and upright, and fearing God, and departing from evil.
1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
1 There was a man in the (A)land of Uz whose name was (B)Job; and that man was (C)blameless, upright, (D)fearing God and (E)turning away from evil.
1 There was a man in the country of Uz(A) named Job.(B) He was a man of perfect integrity,(C) who feared God and turned away from evil.(D)
1 There once was a man in the land of Uz named Job. The man was blameless as well as upright. He feared God and kept away from evil.
3 And his possession will be seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred pair of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and service exceedingly much; and that man shall be great above all the sons of the east.
3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
3 (G)His possessions also were 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and very many servants; and that man was (H)the greatest of all the (a)men of the east.
3 His estate included 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man among all the people of the east.
3 His livestock included 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 teams of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and many servants. Indeed, the man's stature greatly exceeded that of many people who lived in the East.
4 And his sons went and made a drinking in the house, a man his day; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
4 And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
4 His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
4 His sons used to take turns having banquets at their homes. They would send an invitation to their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
4 His sons used to travel to each other's houses in turn on a regular schedule and hold festivals, inviting their three sisters to celebrate with them.
5 And it will be that the days of drinking went round, and Job will send and consecrate them, and he rose early in the morning and brought up burnt-offerings for the number of them all: for Job said, Perhaps my sons sinned, and blessed God in their hearts. Thus did Job all the days.
5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
5 When the days of feasting had completed their cycle, Job would send and consecrate them, rising up early in the morning and offering (I)burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, “(J)Perhaps my sons have sinned and (K)cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.
5 Whenever a round of banqueting was over, Job would send for his children and purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for(a) all of them. For Job thought: Perhaps my children have sinned, having cursed God in their hearts. This was Job’s regular practice.
5 When their time of feasting had concluded, Job would rise early in the morning to send for them and consecrate them to God. He would offer a burnt offering for each one, because Job thought, "Perhaps my children sinned by cursing God in their hearts." Job did this time and again.
Satan's First Test Of Job
6 And the day will be and the sons of God will come to stand before God, and also the adversary will come in the midst of them.
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
6 (L)Now there was a day when the (M)sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and (b)Satan also came among them.
6 One day the sons of God(E) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan(b) also came with them.
6 One day, divine beings presented themselves to the LORD, and Satan accompanied them.
7 And Jehovah will say to the adversary, From whence wilt thou come? And the adversary will answer Jehovah, and say, From running to and fro in the earth, and from walking about in it.
7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
7 The Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “(N)From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.”
7 The Lord asked Satan, “Where have you come from?”“From roaming through the earth,”(F) Satan answered Him, “and walking around on it.”
7 The LORD asked Satan, "Where have you come from?" In response, Satan answered the LORD, "From wandering all over the earth and walking back and forth throughout it."
8 And Jehovah will say to the adversary, Didst thou set thy heart to my servant Job? for none like him in the earth; a man blameless and upright, fearing God and departing from evil.
8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
8 The Lord said to Satan, “Have you (c)considered (O)My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, (P)a blameless and upright man, (d)fearing God and turning away from evil.”
8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity, who fears God and turns away from evil.”
8 Then the LORD asked Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on earth. The man is blameless as well as upright. He fears God and keeps away from evil."
10 Didst thou, not hedge about him and about his house, and about all that is to him from round about? Thou didst bless the work of his hands, and his possession spread abroad in the earth.
10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
10 (R)Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? (S)You have blessed the work of his hands, and his (T)possessions have increased in the land.
10 Haven’t You placed a hedge around(G) him, his household, and everything he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
10 Haven't you surrounded him with a fence on all sides, around his house, and around all that he owns? You have blessed everything he puts his hands on and you have increased his livestock in the land.
11 But send forth now thy band and tough upon all which is to him, if he will not bless thee upon thy face.
11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
11 (U)But put forth Your hand now and (V)touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face.”
11 But stretch out Your hand and strike(H) everything he owns, and he will surely curse You to Your face.”
11 However, stretch out your hand and strike everything he owns, and he will curse you to your face."
12 And Jehovah will say to the adversary, Behold, all that is to him in thy hand: only upon him thou shalt not send. forth thy hand. And the adversary will go forth from the face of Jehovah.
12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
12 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your (f)power, only do not put forth your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the Lord.
12 “Very well,” the Lord told Satan, “everything he owns is in your power. However, you must not lay a hand on Job himself.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence.
12 Then the LORD told Satan, "Very well then, everything he owns is under your control, only you may not extend your hand against him." So Satan left the LORD's presence.
