Job 14

¹ Man born of womanis short of days and full of trouble.^(A)

¹ Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

¹ “^(A)Man, who is born of woman,Is ^(a)short-lived and ^(B)full of turmoil.

¹ Human beings born by women are short-lived and full of trouble.

¹ “Man, who is born of a woman,Is short-lived and full of turmoil.

³ Do You really take notice of one like this?Will You bring me into judgment against You?^(a)(C)

³ And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

³ “You also ^(E)open Your eyes on himAnd ^(F)bring ^(b)him into judgment with Yourself.

³ Indeed, have you opened your eyes on one like this to bring me into a legal fight with you?

³ “You also open Your eyes upon himAnd bring him into judgment with Yourself.

⁵ Since man’s days are determinedand the number of his months depends on You,and since You have set^(b) limits he cannot pass,^(D)

⁵ Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

⁵ “Since his days are determined,The ^(H)number of his months is with You;And his limits You have ^(c)set so that he cannot pass.

⁵ Since his days have been determined, the number of his months is known to you. You've set his limit and he cannot exceed it.

⁵ “Since his days are determined,The number of his months is with You [in Your control],And You have made his limits so he cannot pass [his allotted time].

⁷ There is hope for a tree:If it is cut down, it will sprout again,and its shoots will not die.

⁷ For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

⁷ “For there is hope for a tree,When it is cut down, that it will sprout again,And its shoots will not ^(f)fail.

⁷ "There is hope for the tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots won't stop growing.

⁷ “For there is hope for a tree,If it is cut down, that it will sprout again,And that the shoots of it will not cease nor fail, [but there is no such hope for man].

⁹ the smell of water makes it thriveand produce twigs like a sapling.^(F)

⁹ Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

⁹ At the scent of water it will flourishAnd put forth sprigs like a plant.

⁹ the presence of water will make it to bud so that it sprouts new branches like a young plant.

⁹ Yet at the scent of water [the stump of the tree] will flourishAnd bring forth sprigs and shoots like a seedling.

¹¹ As water disappears from the seaand a river becomes parched and dry,

¹¹ As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

¹¹ “As ^(L)water ^(g)evaporates from the sea,And a river becomes parched and dried up,

¹¹ As water disappears from the sea, or water evaporates from a river,

¹¹ “As water evaporates from the sea,And a river drains and dries up,

¹³ If only You would hide me in Sheol^(H)and conceal me until Your anger^(I) passes.If only You would appoint a time for meand then remember me.

¹³ O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

¹³ “Oh that You would hide me in ^(j)Sheol,That You would conceal me ^(N)until Your wrath returns to You,That You would set a limit for me and remember me!

¹³ "Won't you keep me safe in the afterlife? Conceal me until your anger subsides. Set an appointment for me, then remember me.

¹³ “Oh, that You would hide me in Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead),That You would conceal me until Your wrath is past,That You would set a definite time and then remember me [and in Your lovingkindness imprint me on your heart]!

¹⁵ You would call, and I would answer You.You would long for the work of Your hands.^(L)

¹⁵ Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

¹⁵ “You will call, and I will answer You;You will long for ^(O)the work of Your hands.

¹⁵ You'll call and I'll answer you; you'll long for your creatures that your hands have made.

¹⁵ “[Then] You will call, and I will answer You;You will long for [me] the work of Your hands.

¹⁷ My rebellion would be sealed up in a bag,and You would cover over my iniquity.

¹⁷ My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

¹⁷ “My transgression is ^(R)sealed up in a bag,And You ^(k)wrap up my iniquity.

¹⁷ My transgressions would be sealed up in a bag; you would cover over my sins.

¹⁷ “My transgression is sealed up in a bag,And You cover my wickedness [from Your view].

¹⁹ as water wears away stonesand torrents wash away the soil from the land,so You destroy a man’s hope.^(O)

¹⁹ The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

¹⁹ Water wears away stones,Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth;So You ^(S)destroy man’s hope.

¹⁹ Water wears away stones; floods wash away topsoil from the land but you destroy the hope of human beings just like that!

¹⁹ Water wears away the stones,Its floods and torrents wash away the soil of the earth,So You [O Lord] destroy the hope of man.

²¹ If his sons receive honor, he does not know it;if they become insignificant, he is unaware of it.^(P)

²¹ His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

²¹ “His sons achieve honor, but ^(U)he does not know it;Or they become insignificant, but he does not perceive it.

²¹ "If his children are honored, he doesn't know it; if they become insignificant, he never perceives it.

²¹ “His sons achieve honor, and he does not know it;They become insignificant, and he is not aware of it.
