3 Do You really take notice of one like this? Will You bring me into judgment against You?(a)(C)

3 And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

3 “You also (E)open Your eyes on himAnd (F)bring (b)him into judgment with Yourself.

3 Indeed, have you opened your eyes on one like this to bring me into a legal fight with you?

3 “You also open Your eyes upon himAnd bring him into judgment with Yourself.

5 Since man’s days are determinedand the number of his months depends on You,and since You have set(b) limits he cannot pass,(D)

5 Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

5 “Since his days are determined,The (H)number of his months is with You;And his limits You have (c)set so that he cannot pass.

5 Since his days have been determined, the number of his months is known to you. You've set his limit and he cannot exceed it.

6 “[O God] turn your gaze from him so that he may rest,Until he fulfills his day [on earth] like a hired man.

When A Tree Is Chopped Down

7 There is hope for a tree:If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its shoots will not die.

7 For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

7 “For there is hope for a tree,When it is cut down, that it will sprout again,And its shoots will not (f)fail.

7 "There is hope for the tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots won't stop growing.

7 “For there is hope for a tree,If it is cut down, that it will sprout again,And that the shoots of it will not cease nor fail, [but there is no such hope for man].

8 If its roots grow old in the groundand its stump starts to die in the soil,

8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

8 “Though its roots grow old in the groundAnd its stump dies in the dry soil,

8 Even if its roots have grown ancient in the earth, and its stump begins to rot in the ground,

8 “Though its roots grow old in the earthAnd its stump dies in the dry soil,

9 the smell of water makes it thriveand produce twigs like a sapling.(F)

9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

9 At the scent of water it will flourishAnd put forth sprigs like a plant.

9 the presence of water will make it to bud so that it sprouts new branches like a young plant.

9 Yet at the scent of water [the stump of the tree] will flourishAnd bring forth sprigs and shoots like a seedling.

10 But a man dies and fades away;he breathes his last—where is he?

10 But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

10 “But (J)man dies and lies prostrate.Man (K)expires, and where is he?

10 "But when a person dies and wastes away, when a person breathes his last, where will he be?

10 “But [the brave, strong] man must die and lie face down;Man breathes his last, and where is he?

11 As water disappears from the seaand a river becomes parched and dry,

11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

11 “As (L)water (g)evaporates from the sea,And a river becomes parched and dried up,

11 As water disappears from the sea, or water evaporates from a river,

11 “As water evaporates from the sea,And a river drains and dries up,

12 so man lies down never to rise again. They will not wake up until the heavens are no more;(G)they will not stir from their sleep.

12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

12 So (M)man lies down and does not rise.Until the heavens are no longer,(h)He will not awake nor be aroused out of (i)his sleep.

12 so also a person lies down and does not get up; they won't awaken until the heavens are no more, nor will they arise from their sleep."

12 So man lies down and does not rise [again].Until the heavens are no longer,The dead will not awake nor be raised from their sleep.

13 If only You would hide me in Sheol(H)and conceal me until Your anger(I) passes. If only You would appoint a time for meand then remember me.

13 O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

13 “Oh that You would hide me in (j)Sheol,That You would conceal me (N)until Your wrath returns to You,That You would set a limit for me and remember me!

13 "Won't you keep me safe in the afterlife? Conceal me until your anger subsides. Set an appointment for me, then remember me.

13 “Oh, that You would hide me in Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead),That You would conceal me until Your wrath is past,That You would set a definite time and then remember me [and in Your lovingkindness imprint me on your heart]!

Will We Humans Live Again?

14 When a man dies, will he come back to life?If so, I would wait(J) all the days of my struggle(K)until my relief comes.

14 If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

14 “If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my struggle I will waitUntil my change comes.

14 If a human being dies, will he live again? I will endure the entire time of my assigned service, until I am changed.

14 “If a man dies, will he live again?I will wait all the days of my struggleUntil my change and release will come.(B)

15 You would call, and I would answer You.You would long for the work of Your hands.(L)

15 Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

15 “You will call, and I will answer You;You will long for (O)the work of Your hands.

15 You'll call and I'll answer you; you'll long for your creatures that your hands have made.

15 “[Then] You will call, and I will answer You;You will long for [me] the work of Your hands.

16 For then You would count my steps(M)but would not take note(N) of my sin.

16 For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

16 “For now You (P)number my steps,You do not (Q)observe my sin.

16 Then you'll certainly count every step I took, but you won't keep an inventory of my sin.

16 “But now You number [each of] my steps; You do not observe nor take note of my sin.

17 My rebellion would be sealed up in a bag,and You would cover over my iniquity.

17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

17 “My transgression is (R)sealed up in a bag,And You (k)wrap up my iniquity.

17 My transgressions would be sealed up in a bag; you would cover over my sins.

17 “My transgression is sealed up in a bag,And You cover my wickedness [from Your view].

18 But as a mountain collapses and crumblesand a rock is dislodged from its place,

18 And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

18 “But the falling mountain (l)crumbles away,And the rock moves from its place;

18 "Mountains fall and crumble; rocks are dislodged from their places.

18 “But as a mountain, if it falls, crumbles into nothing,And as the rock is moved from its place,

19 as water wears away stonesand torrents wash away the soil from the land,so You destroy a man’s hope.(O)

19 The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

19 Water wears away stones,Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth; So You (S)destroy man’s hope.

19 Water wears away stones; floods wash away topsoil from the land but you destroy the hope of human beings just like that!

19 Water wears away the stones,Its floods and torrents wash away the soil of the earth,So You [O Lord] destroy the hope of man.

20 You completely overpower him, and he passes on;You change his appearance and send him away.

20 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

20 “You forever overpower him and he (T)departs; You change his appearance and send him away.

20 You overpower him once and for all, and then he departs; you change his appearance and then send him away.

20 “You prevail forever against him and overpower him, and he passes on;You change his appearance and send him away [from the presence of the living].

21 If his sons receive honor, he does not know it;if they become insignificant, he is unaware of it.(P)

21 His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

21 “His sons achieve honor, but (U)he does not know it;Or they become insignificant, but he does not perceive it.

21 "If his children are honored, he doesn't know it; if they become insignificant, he never perceives it.

21 “His sons achieve honor, and he does not know it;They become insignificant, and he is not aware of it.

22 He feels only the pain of his own bodyand mourns only for himself.

22 But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.

22 “But his (m)body pains him,And he mourns only for himself.”

22 He feels only his own pain, and grieves only for himself."

22 “But his body [lamenting its decay] grieves in pain over it,And his soul mourns over [the loss of] himself.”
