1 Then Job made answer and said,

1 Then Job (a)responded,

1 But Job answered and said,

1 Then Job answered:

1 In reply, Job responded:

2 How have you given help to him who has no power! how have you been the salvation of the arm which has no strength!

2 “What a help you are to (b)(A)the weak! How you have saved the arm (B)without strength!

2 How hast thou helped him that is without power? how savest thou the arm that hath no strength?

2 How you have helped(A) the powerlessand delivered the arm that is weak!

2 "What a help you are to the weak! How powerfully you deliver those without strength!

3 How have you given teaching to him who has no wisdom, and fully made clear true knowledge!

3 “What counsel you have given to one without wisdom! What helpful insight you have abundantly (c)provided!

3 How hast thou counselled him that hath no wisdom? and how hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is?

3 How you have counseled the unwise(B)and thoroughly explained the path to success!

3 What counsel you provide to the fool! What insight you provide so abundantly!

4 To whom have your words been said? and whose spirit came out from you?

4 “To whom have you uttered words? And whose (d)spirit was expressed through you?

4 To whom hast thou uttered words? and whose spirit came from thee?

4 Who did you speak these words to?Whose breath came out of your mouth?

4 Who helped you say all of this? Who inspired you?"

God's Power Over Creation

5 The shades in the underworld are shaking; the waters and those living in them.

5 “The (e)(C)departed spirits trembleUnder the waters and their inhabitants.

5 Dead things are formed from under the waters, and the inhabitants thereof.

5 The departed spirits tremblebeneath the waters and all that inhabit them.(C)

5 "The ghosts of the dead writhe under the waters along with those who live there with them.

6 The underworld is uncovered before him, and Destruction has no veil.

6 “Naked is (f)(D)Sheol before Him,And (g)(E)Abaddon has no covering.

6 Hell is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering.

6 Sheol(D) is naked before God,and Abaddon(E) has no covering.(F)

6 Sheol is naked before God and Abaddon has no clothes.

7 By his hand the north is stretched out in space, and the earth is hanging on nothing.

7 “He (F)stretches out the north over empty spaceAnd hangs the earth on nothing.

7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.

7 He stretches the northern skies over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing.

7 He spreads out the north over empty space, suspending the earth over nothing.

8 By him the waters are shut up in his thick clouds, and the cloud does not give way under them.

8 “He (G)wraps up the waters in His clouds,And the cloud does not burst under them.

8 He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them.

8 He wraps up the waters in His clouds, yet the clouds do not burst beneath their weight.(G)

8 "He restricts the waters within clouds and the clouds don't burst open under them.

9 By him the face of his high seat is veiled, and his cloud stretched out over it.

9 “He (h)(H)obscures the face of the (i)full moonAnd spreads His cloud over it.

9 He holdeth back the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it.

9 He obscures the view of His throne, spreading His cloud over it.

9 He has enclosed the face of the full moon and spread his clouds over it.

10 By him a circle is marked out on the face of the waters, to the limits of the light and the dark.

10 “He has inscribed a (I)circle on the surface of the watersAt the (J)boundary of light and darkness.

10 He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.

10 He laid out the horizon on the surface of the waters(H)at the boundary between light and darkness.

10 He has delimited a boundary over the surface of the oceans as a limit between light and darkness.

11 The pillars of heaven are shaking, and are overcome by his sharp words.

11 “The pillars of heaven trembleAnd are amazed at His rebuke.

11 The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof.

11 The pillars that hold up the sky tremble, astounded at His rebuke.(I)

11 The pillars of the heavens tremble and are astounded at his rebuke.

12 By his power the sea was made quiet; and by his wisdom Rahab was wounded.

12 “He (K)quieted the sea with His power,And by His (L)understanding He shattered (M)Rahab.

12 He divideth the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through the proud.

12 By His power He stirred(J) the sea,and by His understanding He crushed Rahab.(K)

12 By his power he disturbs the sea; and with his skill he shatters the sea monster.

13 By his wind the heavens become bright: by his hand the quickly moving snake was cut through.

13 “By His breath the (N)heavens are (j)cleared; His hand has pierced (O)the fleeing serpent.

13 By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.

13 By His breath the heavens gained their beauty; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent.(a)(L)

13 He clears the skies with his wind; his hands have pierced the fleeing serpent.

14 See, these are only the outskirts of his ways; and how small is that which comes to our ears about him! But the thunder of his acts of power is outside all knowledge.

14 “Behold, these are the fringes of His ways; And how faint (P)a word we hear of Him!But His mighty (Q)thunder, who can understand?”

14 Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?

14 These are but the fringes of His ways;how faint is the word we hear of Him!Who can understand His mighty thunder?

14 Indeed, these are the fringes of his ways, and how faint is the whisper we've heard of it! But who can comprehend the thunder of his might?"
