all the sons of Israel and all the people went up and came to Bethel and wept; thus they remained there before the Lord and fasted that day until evening. And they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.
1 Samuel 7:6
They gathered to Mizpah, and drew water and
poured it out before the Lord, and fasted on that day and said there, “ We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the sons of Israel at Mizpah.
2 Chronicles 20:3
Jehoshaphat was afraid and
turned his attention to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
Now on the twenty-fourth day of
this month the sons of Israel assembled with fasting, in sackcloth and with dirt upon them.
Therefore in that day the Lord God of hosts called you to weeping, to wailing,
shaving the head and to wearing sackcloth.
Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a
fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them.
speaking to the
priests who belong to the house of the Lord of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, “Shall I weep in the fifth month and abstain, as I have done these many years?”
pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
