1 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
1 "Sound the ram's horn in Zion! Sound an alarm on my holy mountain! Tremble, all of you inhabitants of the land, because the Day of the LORD is coming. Oh, how near it is!
1 Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound an alarm on My holy Mount [Zion]. Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of [the judgment of] the Lord is coming; it is close at hand -- "
2 A day of (C)darkness and gloom,A day of clouds and thick darkness. As the dawn is spread over the mountains,So there is a (D)great and mighty people; There has (E)never been anything like it,Nor will there be again after itTo the years of many generations.
2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.
2 a day of darkness and gloom,(C)a day of clouds and dense overcast,(D)like the dawn spreading over the mountains;a great and strong people(E) appears, such as never existed in ages past(F)and never will againin all the generations to come.(G)
2 A day of doom and gloom, a day of clouds and shadows like the dawn spreads out to cover the mountains a people strong and robust. Never has there been anything like it, neither will anything follow to compare with it, even through the lifetime of generation upon generation."
2 A day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and of thick mists and darkness, like the morning dawn spread upon the mountains; so there comes a [heathen, hostile] people numerous and mighty, the like of which has never been before and shall not be again even to the years of many generations.
3 A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.
3 A fire destroys(a) in front of them,(H)and behind them a flame devours. The land in front of themis like the Garden of Eden,(I)but behind them,it is like a desert wasteland;(J)there is no escape from them.
3 "A fire blazes in their presence, and behind them a conflagration rages. Before they come, the land is like the garden in Eden; after they leave, there is only a barren wasteland. Indeed, nothing escapes them.
3 A fire devours before them, and behind them a flame burns; the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yes, and none has escaped [the ravages of the devouring hordes].
4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.
4 As to their form, they're like horses; and like chariot horses, how they can run!
4 Their appearance is like the appearance of horses, and like war horses and horsemen, so do they run.
5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.
5 They leap like the rumbling of chariots echoing from mountain tops, like the roar of wild fire that devours the chaff, as an army firmly established in battle array.
5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of the mountains they leap -- "like the noise of a flame of fire devouring the stubble, like a mighty people set in battle array.
6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.
6 The people are terrified in their presence; every face grows pale.
6 Before them the peoples are in anguish; all faces become pale.
7 They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:
7 They run like elite soldiers, climbing ramparts like men trained for war. Each man advances in proper order, never breaking rank.
7 They run like mighty men; they climb the wall like men of war. They march each one [straight ahead] on his ways, and they do not break their ranks.
8 Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.
8 They do not push each other;each man proceeds on his own path. They dodge the arrows, never stopping.
8 Neither does a man crowd his fellow soldier; each one marches in his own path. When they fall by the sword they are not injured.
8 Neither does one thrust upon another; they walk every one in his path. And they burst through and upon the weapons, yet they are not wounded and do not change their course.
9 They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.
9 They swarm through the city, running upon its ramparts. Climbing atop the houses, they enter through windows like a thief."
9 They leap upon the city; they run upon the wall; they climb up on and into the houses; they enter in at the windows like a thief.
10 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:
10 "The land quivers in their presence; even the heavens shake. The sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will stop shining.
10 The earth quakes before them; the heavens tremble. The sun and the moon are darkened and the stars withdraw their shining.
11 The Lord (S)utters His voice before (T)His army;Surely His camp is very great,For (U)strong is he who carries out His word. The (V)day of the Lord is indeed great and very awesome,And (W)who can endure it?
11 And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?
11 The Lord raises His voice(U)in the presence of His army.(V)His camp is very large; Those who carry out His command are powerful.(W)Indeed, the Day of the Lord is terrible and dreadful(X)—who can endure it?(Y)
11 The LORD will shout in the presence of his forces, because his encampment is very great; for powerful is he who carries out his message. Truly the Day of the LORD is great, and very terrifying. Who will be able to survive it?"
11 And the Lord utters His voice before His army, for His host is very great, and [they are] strong and powerful who execute [God's] word. For the day of the Lord is great and very terrible, and who can endure it?
12 Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:
12 "Yet even now," declares the LORD, "Turn back to me with your whole heart, with fasting, tears, and mourning.
12 Therefore also now, says the Lord, turn and keep on coming to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning [until every hindrance is removed and the broken fellowship is restored].
13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
13 Tear your hearts, not your garments; and turn back to the LORD your God. For he is gracious and compassionate, slow to become angry, overflowing in gracious love, and grieves about this evil.
13 Rend your hearts and not your garments and return to the Lord, your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in loving-kindness; and He revokes His sentence of evil [when His conditions are met].
14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?
14 Who knows? He will turn back and relent, will he not, leaving behind a blessing, even a grain offering and drink offering for the LORD your God?"
14 Who knows but what He will turn, revoke your sentence [of evil], and leave a blessing behind Him [giving you the means with which to serve Him], even a cereal or meal offering and a drink offering for the Lord, your God?
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:
15 "Sound the ram's horn in Zion! Dedicate a fast and call for a solemn assembly!
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion; set apart a fast [a day of restraint and humility]; call a solemn assembly.
16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.
16 Gather the people;sanctify the congregation;(AJ)assemble the aged;(b)(AK)gather the children, even those nursing at the breast.Let the groom leave his bedroom,(AL)and the bride her honeymoon chamber.
16 Gather the people! Dedicate the congregation! Bring in the elders. Gather the youngsters and even the nursing infants. Call the bridegroom from his wedding preparations, and the bride from her dressing room.
16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation; assemble the elderly people, gather the children and the nursing infants; let the bridegroom [who is legally exempt from attending] go forth from his chamber and the bride out of her closet. [None is exempt from the humiliation.]
17 Let the priests, the Lord’s ministers,Weep (AK)between the porch and the altar,And let them say, “(AL)Spare Your people, O Lord,And do not make Your inheritance a (AM)reproach,A byword among the nations. Why should they among the peoples say,‘(AN)Where is their God?’”
17 Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?
17 Let the priests,(AM) the Lord’s ministers, weep between the portico and the altar.(AN)Let them say:“Have pity on Your people, Lord,(AO)and do not make Your inheritance a disgrace,(AP)an object of scorn among the nations. Why should it be said among the peoples,‘Where is their God?’”(AQ)
17 As they serve between the porch and the altar, let the priests and ministers of the LORD weep and pray: "Spare your people, LORD, and do not make your heritage a disgrace so that nations ridicule them. Why should they say among the people, "Where is their God?"'"
17 Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar; and let them say, Have pity and spare Your people, O Lord, and give not Your heritage to reproach, that the [heathen] nations should rule over them or use a byword against them. Why should they say among the peoples, Where is their God?
18 Then will the LORD be jealous for his land, and pity his people.
18 Then the LORD will show great concern for his land, and will have compassion on his people.
18 Then was the Lord jealous for His land and had pity on His people.
19 The Lord (i)will answer and say to His people,“Behold, I am going to (AQ)send you grain, new wine and oil,And you will be satisfied in full with (j)them; And I will (AR)never again make you a reproach among the nations.
19 Yea, the LORD will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:
19 The LORD will say to his people, "Look! I will send you grain, new wine, and oil, and you will be content with them. I will no longer cause you to be a disgrace among the nations."
19 Yes, the Lord answered and said to His people, Behold, I am sending you grain and juice [of the grape] and oil, and you shall be satisfied with them; and I will no more make you a reproach among the [heathen] nations.
20 “But I will remove the (AS)northern army far from you,And I will drive it into a parched and desolate land,And its vanguard into the (AT)eastern sea,And its rear guard into the (AU)western sea.And its (AV)stench will arise and its foul smell will come up,For it has done great things.”
20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.
20 I will drive the northerner far from you(AV)and banish him to a dry and desolate land, his front ranks into the Dead Sea,(AW)and his rear guard into the Mediterranean Sea.(AX)His stench will rise;yes, his rotten smell will rise,(AY)for he has done catastrophic things.
20 "I will remove the northerners from you, driving them to a barren and desolate land the front toward the Dead Sea and the back toward the Mediterranean. Their stench will rise, and their stinking odor will ascend, because they have done great things."
20 But I will remove far off from you the northern [destroyer's] army and will drive it into a land barren and desolate, with its front toward the eastern [Dead] Sea and with its rear toward the western [Mediterranean] Sea. And its stench shall come up [like that of a decaying mass of locusts, a symbol and forecast of the fate of the northern army in the final day of the Lord], and its foul odor shall come up, because He has done great things [the Lord will have destroyed the invaders]!
21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the LORD will do great things.
21 "Stop being afraid, land! Rejoice and be glad, because the LORD will do great things.
21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice, for the Lord has done great things!
22 Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength.
22 Stop being afraid, beasts of the field, because the desert pastures will bloom, the trees will bear their fruit, and the fig tree and vine will deliver their wealth.
22 Be not afraid, you wild beasts of the field, for the pastures of the wilderness have sprung up and are green; the tree bears its fruit, and the fig tree and the vine yield their [full] strength.
23 So rejoice, O (AZ)sons of Zion,And (BA)be glad in the Lord your God;For He has (BB)given you (l)the early rain for your vindication. And He has poured down for you the rain,The (m)early and (n)(BC)latter rain (o)as before.
23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.
23 Children of Zion,(BC) rejoice and be gladin the Lord your God,(BD)because He gives you the autumn rainfor your vindication.(c)(BE)He sends showers for you, both autumn and spring rain(BF) as before.
23 And so be glad, children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God, because he has given you the right amount of early rain, and he will cause the rain to fall for you, both the early rain and the later rain as before.
23 Be glad then, you children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord, your God; for He gives you the former or early rain in just measure and in righteousness, and He causes to come down for you the rain, the former rain and the latter rain, as before.
24 And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the fats shall overflow with wine and oil.
24 The threshing floors will be smothered in grain, and the vats will overflow with wine and oil.
24 And the [threshing] floors shall be full of grain and the vats shall overflow with juice [of the grape] and oil.
25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.
25 "Then I will restore to you the years that the locust swarm devoured, as did the young locust, the other locusts, and the ravaging locust, that great army of mine that I sent among you.
25 And I will restore or replace for you the years that the locust has eaten -- "the hopping locust, the stripping locust, and the crawling locust, My great army which I sent among you.
26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed.
26 You will have plenty to eat, and will be fully satisfied. You will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has performed wonders specifically for you. And my people will never be ashamed.
26 And you shall eat in plenty and be satisfied and praise the name of the Lord, your God, Who has dealt wondrously with you. And My people shall never be put to shame.
27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.
27 As a result, you will know that I am in the midst of Israel; that I myself am the LORD your God and there is none other! And my people will never be ashamed."
27 And you shall know, understand, and realize that I am in the midst of Israel and that I the Lord am your God and there is none else. My people shall never be put to shame.
28 “(p)(BM)It will come about after thisThat I will (BN)pour out My Spirit on all (q)(BO)mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy,Your old men will dream dreams,Your young men will see visions.
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
28 "Then it will come about at a later time that I will pour out my Spirit on every person. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your elderly people will dream dreams, and your young people will see visions.
28 And afterward I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.
29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
29 Also at that time I will pour out my Spirit upon men and women servants.
29 Even upon the menservants and upon the maidservants in those days will I pour out My Spirit.
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
30 I will display warnings in the heavens, and on the earth blood, fire, and columns of smoke.
30 And I will show signs and wonders in the heavens, and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.
31 The sun will be given over to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the coming of the great and terrifying Day of the LORD.
31 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.
32 “And it will come about that (BT)whoever calls on the name of the LordWill be delivered; For (BU)on Mount Zion and in JerusalemThere will be those who (BV)escape,As the Lord has said,Even among the (BW)survivors whom the Lord calls.
32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.
32 And everyone who calls upon the name of the LORD will be delivered. For as the LORD has said, "In Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape, the survivors whom the LORD is calling.'"
32 And whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered and saved, for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the remnant [of survivors] shall be those whom the Lord calls.
