Persecution Of Disciples Predicted

1 "I have told you this to keep you from falling away.

1 (A)These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from (B)stumbling.

1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

1 “I have told you these things to keep you from stumbling.

1 “I have told you these things so that you will not stumble or be caught off guard and fall away.

2 You'll be thrown out of the synagogues. Yes, a time is coming when the one who kills you will think he's serving God.

2 (a)They will (C)make you outcasts from the synagogue, but (D)an hour is coming for everyone (E)who kills you to think that he is offering service to God.

2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

2 They will ban you from the synagogues.(A) In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering service(B) to God.

2 They will put you out of the synagogues and make you outcasts. And a time is coming when whoever kills you will think that he is offering service to God.

3 They'll do this because they haven't known the Father or me.

3 These things they will do (F)because they have not known the Father or Me.

3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

3 They will do these things because they haven’t known(C) the Father or Me.

3 And they will do these things because they have not known the Father or Me.

The Work Of The Holy Spirit

4 But I've told you this, so that when the time comes you'll remember that I told you about them. I didn't tell you this in the beginning, because I was still with you."

4 But these things I have spoken to you, (G)so that when their hour comes, you (b)may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you (H)at the beginning, because I was with you.

4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

4 But I have told you these things so that when their time(a) comes you may remember(D) I told them to you. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.

4 I have told you these things [now], so that when their time comes, you will remember that I told you about them. I did not say these things to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

Jesus' Departure And The Coming Of The Holy Spirit

5 "But now I am going to the one who sent me. Yet none of you asks me, "Where are you going?'

5 “But now (I)I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘(J)Where are You going?’

5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

5 “But now I am going away(E) to Him who sent Me, and not one of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’(F)

5 “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’

6 But because I have told you this, sorrow has filled your hearts.

6 But because I have said these things to you, (K)sorrow has filled your heart.

6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

6 Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts [and taken complete possession of them].

7 However, I'm telling you the truth. It's for your advantage that I'm going away, because if I don't go away, the Helper won't come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

7 But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the (c)(L)Helper will not come to you; but if I go, (M)I will send Him to you.

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth.(G) It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you.(H)

7 But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the (a)Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him (the Holy Spirit) to you [to be in close fellowship with you].

8 When he comes, he will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment

8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;

8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

8 When He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment:

8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world about [the guilt of] sin [and the need for a Savior], and about righteousness, and about judgment:

9 of sin, because they don't believe in me;

9 concerning sin, (N)because they do not believe in Me;

9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;

9 About sin, because they do not believe in Me;

9 about sin [and the true nature of it], because they do not believe in Me [and My message];

10 of righteousness, because I'm going to the Father and you will no longer see me;

10 and concerning (O)righteousness, because (P)I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;

10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father(I) and you will no longer see Me;

10 about righteousness [personal integrity and godly character], because I am going to My Father and you will no longer see Me;

11 and of judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

11 (Q)and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

11 and about judgment,(J) because the ruler of this world(K) has been judged.(L)

11 about judgment [the certainty of it], because the ruler of this world (Satan) has been judged and condemned.

12 "I still have a lot to say to you, but you cannot bear it now.

12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

12 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.(M)

12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear [to hear] them now.

13 Yet when the Spirit of Truth comes, he'll guide you into all truth. He won't speak on his own accord, but he'll speak whatever he hears and will declare to you the things that are to come.

13 But when He, (R)the Spirit of truth, comes, He will (S)guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

13 When the Spirit of truth(N) comes, He will guide you into all the truth.(O) For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.

13 But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth [full and complete truth]. For He will not speak on His own initiative, but He will speak whatever He hears [from the Father—the message regarding the Son], and He will disclose to you what is to come [in the future].

14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

14 He will (T)glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.

14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

14 He will glorify Me, because He will take from what is Mine and declare it to you.

14 He will glorify and honor Me, because He (the Holy Spirit) will take from what is Mine and will disclose it to you.

15 All that the Father has is mine. That is why I said, "He will take what is mine and declare it to you.'

15 (U)All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

15 Everything the Father(P) has is Mine.(Q) This is why I told you that He takes from what is Mine and will declare it to you.(R)

15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Because of this I said that He [the Spirit] will take from what is Mine and will reveal it to you.

Jesus Predicts His Return To The Disciples

16 In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again."

16 (V)A little while, and (W)you will no longer see Me; and again a little while, and (X)you will see Me.”

16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

16 “A little while(S) and you will no longer see Me;(T) again a little while and you will see Me.”(b)

16 “A little while, and you will no longer see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me.”

17 At this point, some of his disciples asked each other, "What does he mean by telling us, "In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again,' and, "because I am going to the Father'?"

17 Some of His disciples then said to one another, “What is this thing He is telling us, (Y)A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because (Z)I go to the Father’?”

17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?

17 Therefore some of His disciples said to one another, “What is this He tells us: ‘A little while and you will not see Me; again a little while and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’(U)?”

17 Some of His disciples said to one another, “What does He mean when He tells us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I am going to My Father’?”

18 They kept saying, "What is this "in a little while' that he keeps talking about? We don't know what he means."

18 So they were saying, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is talking about.”

18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.

18 They said, “What is this He is saying,(c) ‘A little while’? We don’t know what He’s talking about!”

18 So they were saying, “What does He mean when He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is talking about.”

19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him a question, so he asked them, "Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, "In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again'?

19 (AA)Jesus knew that they wished to question Him, and He said to them, “Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me’?

19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?

19 Jesus knew they wanted to question Him, so He said to them, “Are you asking one another about what I said, ‘A little while and you will not see Me; again a little while and you will see Me’?

19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him, so He said to them, “Are you wondering among yourselves about what I meant when I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me’?

20 Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, you'll cry and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You'll be deeply distressed, but your pain will turn into joy.

20 Truly, truly, I say to you, that (AB)you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but (AC)your grief will be turned into joy.

20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

20 “I assure you: You will weep and wail,(V) but the world will rejoice. You will become sorrowful,(W) but your sorrow will turn to joy.

20 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, that you will weep and grieve [in great mourning], but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.

21 When a woman is in labor she has pain, because her time has come. Yet when she has given birth to her child, she doesn't remember the agony anymore because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world.

21 (AD)Whenever a woman is in labor she has (d)pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a (e)child has been born into the world.

21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

21 When a woman is in labor she has pain(X) because her time has come. But when she has given birth to a child,(Y) she no longer remembers the suffering because of the joy that a person has been born into the world.

21 A woman, when she is in labor, has pain because her time [to give birth] has come; but when she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of her joy that a child has come into the world.

22 Now you are having pain. But I'll see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

22 Therefore (AE)you too have grief now; but (AF)I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

22 So you also have sorrow(d) now. But I will see you again. Your hearts will rejoice,(Z) and no one will rob you of your joy.(AA)

22 So for now you are in grief; but I will see you again, and [then] your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away from you your [great] joy.

23 On that day, you won't ask me for anything. Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, whatever you ask the Father for in my name, he will give it to you.

23 (AG)In that day (AH)you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, (AI)if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you.

23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

23 In that day you will not ask Me anything.“I assure you: Anything you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.(AB)

23 In that day you will not [need to] ask Me about anything. I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name [as My representative], He will give you.

24 So far you haven't asked for anything in my name. Keep asking and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete."

24 (AJ)Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your (AK)joy may be made full.

24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

24 Until now you have asked for nothing in My name.(AC) Ask and you will receive,(AD) so that your joy may be complete.(AE)

24 Until now you have not asked [the Father] for anything in My name; but now ask and keep on asking and you will receive, so that your joy may be full and complete.

Jesus' Victory Over The World

25 "I have said these things to you in figurative language. The time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but will tell you plainly about the Father.

25 “These things I have spoken to you in (f)(AL)figurative language; (AM)an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in (g)figurative language, but will tell you plainly of the Father.

25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.

25 “I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. A time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.

25 “I have told you these things in figurative language (veiled language, proverbs); the hour is now coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.

26 At that time, you will make your requests in my name, so that I will have no need to ask the Father on your behalf,

26 (AN)In that day (AO)you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf;

26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:

26 In that day you will ask(AF) in My name.(AG) I am not telling you that I will make requests to the Father on your behalf.

26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I am not saying to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf [because it will be unnecessary];

27 because the Father himself loves you, and because you have loved me and believed that I came from God.

27 for (AP)the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and (AQ)have believed that (AR)I came forth from the Father.

27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

27 For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved(AH) Me and have believed that I came from God.(e)(AI)

27 for the Father Himself [tenderly] loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from the Father.

28 I left the Father and came into the world. Now I'm leaving the world and going back to the Father."

28 (AS)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world; I am leaving the world again and (AT)going to the Father.”

28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.

28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”(AJ)

28 I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 Jesus' disciples said, "Well, now you're speaking plainly and not using figurative language.

29 His disciples *said, “Lo, now You are speaking plainly and are not (h)using (AU)a figure of speech.

29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.

29 “Ah!” His disciples said. “Now You’re speaking plainly and not using any figurative language.

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now You are speaking plainly to us and not in figures of speech!

30 Now we know that you know everything and don't need to have anyone ask you any questions. Because of this, we believe that you have come from God."

30 Now we know that You know all things, and have no need for anyone to question You; by this we (AV)believe that You (AW)came from God.”

30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

30 Now we know that You know everything(AK) and don’t need anyone to question You. By this we believe that You came from God.”(AL)

30 Now we know that You know all things, and have no need for anyone to question You; because of this we believe [without any doubt] that you came from God.”

31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe?

31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?

31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

31 Jesus responded to them, “Do you now believe?

31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now [at last] believe?

32 Listen, the time is coming, indeed it has already come, when you will be scattered, each of you to his own home, and you will leave me all by myself. Yet I'm not alone, because the Father is with me.

32 Behold, (AX)an hour is coming, and has already come, for (AY)you to be scattered, each to (AZ)his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet (BA)I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.

32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

32 Look: An hour is coming, and has come,(AM) when each of you will be scattered to his own home, and you will leave Me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.(AN)

32 Take careful notice: an hour is coming, and has arrived, when you will all be scattered, each to his own home, leaving Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.

33 I have told you this so that through me you may have peace. In the world you'll have trouble, but be courageous I've overcome the world!"

33 These things I have spoken to you, so that (BB)in Me you may have peace. (BC)In the world you have tribulation, but (BD)take courage; (BE)I have overcome the world.”

33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

33 I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”

33 I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]
