And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

“They have gaped at me with their mouth,
They have

slapped me on the cheek with contempt;

They have massed themselves against me.

“They abhor me and stand aloof from me,
And they do not refrain from spitting at my face.

The Lord God has opened My ear;
And I was not disobedient
Nor did I turn back.

Pashhur had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put him in the stocks that were at the upper Benjamin Gate, which was by the house of the Lord.

“Now muster yourselves in troops, daughter of troops;

They have laid siege against us;

With a rod they will smite the judge of Israel on the cheek.

Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him,

Some began to spit at Him, and

to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers received Him with slaps in the face.

Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking Him and beating Him,

The high priest Ananias commanded those standing beside him to strike him on the mouth.
