A Man Born Blind Is Given Sight
1 And as he passed on, he saw a man who had been blind from his birth.
1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
1 As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth.
1 As He was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth.
1 As he was walking along, he observed a man who had been blind from birth.
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who sinned, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
2 And His disciples asked Him, “(A)Rabbi, who sinned, (B)this man or his (C)parents, that he would be born blind?”
2 His disciples questioned Him: “Rabbi,(A) who sinned, this man(B) or his parents,(C) that he was born blind?”
2 His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that caused him to be born blind?"
3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents, but that the works of God might be made manifest thro' him.
3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
3 Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so (D)that the works of God might be displayed in him.
3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” Jesus answered. “This came about so that God’s works(D) might be displayed in him.
3 Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned. This happened so that God's work might be revealed in him.
4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day; the night is coming, when no man can work.
4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
4 We must work the works of Him who sent Me (E)as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.
4 We(a) must do the works(E) of Him who sent Me(b) while it is day.(F) Night is coming when no one can work.
4 I must do the work of the one who sent me while it is day. Night is approaching, when no one can work.
6 he spit on the ground, and made clay with the spittle, and anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
6 When He had said this, He (G)spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes,
6 After He said these things He spit on the ground, made some mud(H) from the saliva, and spread the mud on his eyes.
6 After saying this, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he spread the mud on the man's eyes
7 And said to him, Go wash at the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went therefore, and washed, and came seeing.
7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.
7 and said to him, “Go, wash in (H)the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and (I)washed, and (J)came back seeing.
7 “Go,” He told him, “wash in the pool of Siloam”(I) (which means “Sent”). So he left, washed, and came back seeing.(J)
7 and told him, "Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated "Sent One"). So he went off, washed, and came back seeing.
8 Then the neighbours and they who had seen him before, when he was blind, said, Is not this he who used to sit begging?
8 The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?
8 Therefore the neighbors, and those who previously saw him as a beggar, were saying, “Is not this the one who used to (K)sit and beg?”
8 His neighbors and those who formerly had seen him as a beggar said, “Isn’t this the man who sat begging?”
8 Then the neighbors and those who had previously seen him as a beggar said, "This is the man who used to sit and beg, isn't it?"
9 Some said, This is he: others, He is like him: but he said, I am he.
9 Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.
9 Others were saying, “This is he,” still others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” (a)He kept saying, “I am the one.”
9 Some said, “He’s the one.” “No,” others were saying, “but he looks like him.”He kept saying, “I’m the one!”
9 Some were saying, "It's him," while others were saying, "No, but it's someone like him." But he himself kept saying, "It's me!"
10 They said to him, How were thine eyes opened?
10 Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?
10 So they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?”
10 Therefore they asked him, “Then how were your eyes opened?”
10 So they asked him, "How, then, did you gain your eyesight?"
11 He answered and said, A man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes, and said to me, Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.
11 He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.
11 He answered, “The man who is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to (L)Siloam and wash’; so I went away and washed, and I received sight.”
11 He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, ‘Go to Siloam(K) and wash.’ So when I went and washed I received my sight.”(L)
11 He said, "The man named Jesus made some mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, "Go to Siloam and wash.' So off I went and washed, and I received my sight."
12 And I went, and washed, and received sight. Then said they to him, Where is he? He said, I know not.
12 Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.
12 They said to him, “Where is He?” He *said, “I do not know.”
12 “Where is He?” they asked.“I don’t know,” he said.
12 They asked him, "Where is that man?" He said, "I don't know!"
The Reaction Of The Pharisees To The Healing
15 Again the Pharisees also asked him, How he had received his sight? He said to them, He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and see.
15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.
15 (N)Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, “He applied clay to my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”
15 So again the Pharisees asked him how he received his sight.“He put mud on my eyes,” he told them. “I washed and I can see.”
15 So the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had gained his sight. He told them, "He put mud on my eyes, then I washed, and now I can see."
16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner, do such miracles?
16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
16 Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because He (O)does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such (b)(P)signs?” And (Q)there was a division among them.
16 Therefore some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God,(O) for He doesn’t keep the Sabbath!” But others were saying, “How can a sinful man(P) perform such signs?” And there was a division(Q) among them.
16 Some of the Pharisees began to remark, "This man is not from God because he does not keep the Sabbath." But others were saying, "How can a sinful man perform such signs?" And there was a division among them.
17 And there was a division among them. They say to the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, for that he hath opened thine eyes?
17 They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
17 So they *said to the blind man (R)again, “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a (S)prophet.”
17 Again they asked the blind man,(c) “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?”“He’s a prophet,”(R) he said.
17 So they asked the formerly blind man again, "What do you say about him, since it was your eyes he healed?" He said, "He is a prophet."
18 He said, He is a prophet. But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, till they had called the parents of him who had received his sight.
18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.
18 (T)The Jews then did not believe it of him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight,
18 The Jews did not believe this about him—that he was blind and received sight—until they summoned the parents of the one who had received his sight.
18 The Jewish leaders did not believe that the man had been blind and had gained sight until they summoned his parents
19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind?
19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?
19 and questioned them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?”
19 They asked them, “Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”
19 and asked them, "Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? How does he now see?"
20 How then doth he now see? His parents answered them, and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind.
20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:
20 His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;
20 “We know this is our son and that he was born blind,” his parents answered.
20 His parents replied, "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.
21 But how he now seeth, we know not, or who hath opened his eyes, we know not.
21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.
21 but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself.”
21 “But we don’t know how he now sees, and we don’t know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he’s of age. He will speak for himself.”
21 But we don't know how it is that he now sees, and we don't know who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is of age and can speak for himself."
22 He is of age: ask him; he will speak concerning himself. His parents said this, because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed, That if any man should own him to be Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
22 These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
22 His parents said this because they (U)were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews (V)had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him to be (c)Christ, (W)he was to be put out of the synagogue.
22 His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, since the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him as Messiah,(S) he would be banned from the synagogue.
22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, since the Jewish leaders had already agreed that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be thrown out of the synagogue.
24 Therefore they called a second time the man that had been blind, and said to him, Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner.
24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.
24 So a second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, “(Y)Give glory to God; we know that (Z)this man is a sinner.”
24 So a second time they summoned the man who had been blind and told him, “Give glory(T) to God.(d)(U) We know that this man is a sinner!”
24 The Jewish leaders summoned the man who had been blind a second time and told him, "Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner."
25 He answered and said, That he is a sinner I know not: one thing I know, that I was blind, and now see.
25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
25 He then answered, “Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.”
25 He answered, “Whether or not He’s a sinner, I don’t know. One thing I do know: I was blind, and now I can see!”
25 But he responded, "I don't know whether he is a sinner or not. The one thing I do know is that I used to be blind and now I can see!"
26 They said to him again, What did he to thee?
26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?
26 So they said to him, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”
26 Then they asked him, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”
26 Then they asked him, "What did he do to you? How did he heal your eyes?"
27 How opened he thine eyes? He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hearken: why would ye hear it again?
27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
27 He answered them, “(AA)I told you already and you did not (AB)listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?”
27 “I already told you,” he said, “and you didn’t listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don’t want to become His disciples too, do you?”
27 He answered them, "I've already told you, but you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don't want to become his disciples, too, do you?"
28 Are ye also willing to be his disciples? Then they reviled him and said, Thou art a disciple of that fellow; but we are disciples of Moses.
28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.
28 At this, they turned on him in fury and said, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses!
30 The man answered and said to them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not whence he is; altho' he hath opened my eyes!
30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.
30 The man answered and said to them, “Well, here is an amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.
30 “This is an amazing thing,” the man told them. “You don’t know where He is from, yet He opened my eyes!
30 The man answered them, "This is an amazing thing! You don't know where he comes from, yet he healed my eyes.
31 We know that God heareth not sinners; but if a man be a worshiper of God, and do his will, him he heareth.
31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
31 We know that (AE)God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him.
31 We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners,(X) but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will,(Y) He listens to him.(Z)
31 We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but he does listen to anyone who worships him and does his will.
32 Since the world began it was not heard, that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
32 (d)Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.
32 Throughout history(e) no one has ever heard of someone opening the eyes of a person born blind.(AA)
32 Ever since creation it has never been heard that anyone healed the eyes of a man who was born blind.
34 They answered and said to him, Thou-wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
34 They answered him, “(AG)You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us?” So they (AH)put him out.
34 “You were born entirely in sin,”(AC) they replied, “and are you trying to teach us?” Then they threw him out.(f)(AD)
34 They asked him, "You were born a sinner and you are trying to instruct us?" And they threw him out.
Jesus As The Son Of Man
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and having found him, he said to him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
35 Jesus heard that they had (AI)put him out, and finding him, He said, “Do you believe in the (AJ)Son of Man?”
35 When Jesus heard that they had thrown the man out, He found him and asked, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”(g)(AE)
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out. So when he found him, he asked him, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"
37 Jesus said to him, Thou hast both seen him, and he that talketh with thee is he.
37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
37 Jesus answered, “You have seen Him; in fact, He is the One speaking with you.”
37 Jesus told him, "You have seen him. He is the person who is talking with you."
39 And he worshiped him. Jesus said, For judgment am I come into the world, that they who see not, may see, and that they who see, may become blind.
39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
39 And Jesus said, “(AN)For judgment I came into this world, so that (AO)those who do not see may see, and that (AP)those who see may become blind.”
39 Jesus said, “I came into this world(AG) for judgment,(AH) in order that those who do not see will see and those who do see will become blind.”(AI)
39 Then Jesus said, "I have come into this world to judge it, so that those who are blind may see and so that those who see may become blind."
40 And some of the Pharisees that were with him heard this, and said to him, Are we blind also?
40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
40 Those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, “(AQ)We are not blind too, are we?”
40 Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and asked Him, “We aren’t blind too, are we?”
40 Some of the Pharisees who were near him overheard this and asked him, "We aren't blind, too, are we?"
41 Jesus said to them, If ye had been blind, ye would have had no sin. But now ye say, We see: therefore your sin remaineth.
41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
41 Jesus said to them, “(AR)If you were blind, you would have no sin; but (f)since you say, ‘(AS)We see,’ your sin remains.
41 “If you were blind,” Jesus told them, “you wouldn’t have sin.(h)(AJ) But now that you say, ‘We see’—your sin remains.
41 Jesus told them, "If you were blind, you would not have any sin. But now that you insist, "We see,' your sin still exists."
