Joshua's Conquest Of The North
1 And when Jabin king of Hazor had heard that, he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph;
1 And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,
1 Then it came about, when Jabin king of (A)Hazor heard of it, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon and to the king of Shimron and to the king of Achshaph,
1 When Jabin king of Hazor heard this news, he sent a message to:Jobab king of Madon, the kings of Shimron and Achshaph,
1 When King Jabin of Hazor heard all of this, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph,
2 and unto the kings that are by north in the mountains and plains, on the south side of Chinnereth, and in the low countries, and in the regions of Dor upon the sea;
2 And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west,
2 and to the kings who were of the north in the hill country, and in the (B)Arabah—south of (a)Chinneroth and in the lowland and on the (b)heights of Dor on the west—
2 and the kings of the north in the hill country, the Arabah south of Chinnereth,(A)the Judean foothills,(a)and the Slopes of Dor(b) to the west,
2 and to the kings in the north, in the hill country, in the plain south of Chinnereth, in the Shephelah, and in the hills of Dor toward the west,
3 and unto the Canaanites both by east and west: and unto the Amorites, Hittites, Perezites, and Jebusites in the mountains; and unto the Hivites under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh:
3 And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh.
3 to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Jebusite in the hill country, and (C)the Hivite (c)at the foot of (D)Hermon in the land of (E)Mizpeh.
3 the Canaanites in the east and west, the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, and Jebusites in the hill country, and the Hivites at the foot of Hermonin the land of Mizpah.(B)
3 to the eastern and western Canaanites the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites in the hill country, and the Hivites below Hermon in the territory of Mizpah.
4 which came out, and all their hosts with them, a multitude of folk even as the sands of the sea in number with horses and chariots exceeding many.
4 And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.
4 They came out, they and all their armies with them, (F)as many people as the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots.
4 They went out with all their armies—a multitude as numerous as the sand on the seashore—along with a vast number of horses and chariots.
4 So they went out, they and all of their armies with them a multitude as numerous as the sand on the seashore accompanied by many horses and chariots.
5 And all these kings met together, and came and pitched together upon the water of Merom, for to fight with Israel.
5 And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.
5 So all of these kings having agreed to meet, came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.
5 All these kings joined forces; they came together and camped at the waters of Merom to attack Israel.(C)
5 After all these kings had gathered together, they went out and camped together at the waters of Merom to fight Israel.
6 And the LORD said unto Joshua, "Be not afraid of them: for tomorrow about this time I will deliver them all slain, before all Israel: and thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire."
6 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.
6 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “(G)Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow at this time I will deliver all of them slain before Israel; you shall (H)hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.”
6 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for at this time tomorrow I will cause all of them to be killed before Israel.(D) You are to hamstring their horses and burn up their chariots.”(E)
6 But the LORD told Joshua, "Don't be afraid of them, because tomorrow about this time I am giving them all to you dead in the presence of Israel. Hamstring their horses and incinerate their chariots."
7 And Joshua came, and all the men of war with him, against them: unto the water of Merom, suddenly, and fell upon them.
7 So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them.
7 So Joshua and all the people of war with him came upon them suddenly by the waters of Merom, and attacked them.
7 So Joshua and his whole military force surprised them at the waters of Merom and attacked them.
7 So Joshua and his entire fighting force approached them suddenly by the waters of Merom and attacked them.
8 And the LORD delivered them into the hands of Israel: and they smote them and chased them, into great Sidon, and unto the hot waters, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward: and smote them until they had none remaining of them.
8 And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephothmaim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.
8 The Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel, so that they (d)defeated them, and pursued them as far as Great Sidon and (I)Misrephoth-maim and the valley of (J)Mizpeh to the east; and they struck them until no survivor was left to them.
8 The Lord handed them over to Israel, and they struck them down, pursuing them as far as Great Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and to the east as far as the Valley of Mizpeh.(c)(F) They struck them down, leaving no survivors.
8 The LORD handed them over to the control of Israel, who defeated them and chased them as far as Greater Sidon and east as far as the Mizpah Valley. They attacked them until none remained.
9 And Joshua served them as the LORD bade him, houghed their horses and burnt their chariots with fire.
9 And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him: he houghed their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.
9 Joshua did to them as the Lord had told him; he (K)hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.
9 Joshua treated them as the Lord had told him; he hamstrung their horses and burned up their chariots.
9 Joshua dealt with them just as the LORD had told him: he hamstrung their horses and incinerated their chariots.
10 Then Joshua at that time turned back and took Hazor and smote her king with the sword. For Hazor, before time, was the head of all those kingdoms.
10 And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.
10 Then Joshua turned back at that time, and captured (L)Hazor and struck its king with the sword; for Hazor formerly was the head of all these kingdoms.
10 At that time Joshua turned back, captured Hazor, and struck down its king with the sword, because Hazor had formerly been the leader of all these kingdoms.
10 Joshua then turned back and captured Hazor, executing its king, because Hazor used to be the head of all of those kingdoms.
11 And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them, that no breath was let remain. And burnt Hazor with fire,
11 And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.
11 (M)They struck every person who was in it with the edge of the sword, (e)utterly destroying them; there was no one left who breathed. And he burned Hazor with fire.
11 They struck down everyone in it with the sword, completely destroying(G) them; he left no one alive. Then he burned down Hazor.
11 They executed all of the people who lived in it, completely destroying it and leaving no one alive. Then he burned Hazor in fire.
12 and all the cities of those kings, with all the kings of them, Joshua took and smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed them as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded.
12 And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded.
12 Joshua captured all the cities of these kings, and all their kings, and he struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed them; just (N)as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.
12 Joshua captured all these kings and their cities and struck them down with the sword. He completely destroyed them, as Moses the Lord’s servant(H) had commanded.
12 So Joshua captured and annihilated all of these cities, along with their kings, completely destroying them, just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded.
13 But Israel burnt none of the cities that stood upon hills, save Hazor only that Joshua burnt:
13 But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.
13 However, Israel did not burn any cities that stood on their mounds, except Hazor alone, which Joshua burned.
13 However, Israel did not burn any of the cities that stood on their mounds except Hazor, which Joshua burned.
13 However, Israel did not burn any of the cities that had been built on mounds of ruins, except for Hazor only, which Joshua burned.
14 but all the spoil of the said cities and the cattle, the children of Israel caught unto themselves. But the men only they smote with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them,
14 And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.
14 (O)All the spoil of these cities and the cattle, the sons of Israel took as their plunder; but they struck every man with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them. They left no one who breathed.
14 The Israelites plundered all the spoils and cattle of these cities for themselves. But they struck down every person with the sword until they had annihilated them, leaving no one alive.
14 The Israelis took the spoils of war from these cities, along with their livestock, but they executed every human being until they had completely destroyed them, leaving no one alive.
15 and had left no breath remaining. As the LORD commanded Joshua, and even so did Joshua: and diminished no word of all that the LORD commanded Moses.
15 As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.
15 Just as the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.
15 Just as the Lord had commanded His servant Moses, Moses commanded Joshua. That is what Joshua did, leaving nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.
15 Joshua did just what the LORD had commanded his servant Moses and just what Moses had commanded him, leaving nothing unfinished.
A Review Of Joshua's Conquests
16 And so Joshua took all the land, the hills and all the south country, and all the land of Goshen, and the low country, and the plains, and the mountain of Israel, with the low country of the same,
16 So Joshua took all that land, the hills, and all the south country, and all the land of Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same;
16 Thus Joshua took all that land: (P)the hill country and all the (f)Negev, all that land of Goshen, the lowland, (Q)the Arabah, the hill country of Israel and its lowland
16 So Joshua took all this land—the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen,(I) the foothills,(d) the Arabah, and the hill country of Israel with its foothills(e)—
16 So Joshua conquered all of these territories: the hill country, all of the Negev, the entire land of Goshen with its foothills, the plains of Jordan, and the mountains of Israel with its foothills
17 even from mount Halak that goeth up to Seir, unto Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon, under mount Hermon. And all the kings of the same, he took and smote them, and slew them.
17 Even from the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and smote them, and slew them.
17 from (R)Mount Halak, that rises toward Seir, even as far as Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon (g)at the foot of Mount Hermon. And he captured (S)all their kings and struck them down and put them to death.
17 from Mount Halak,(J) which ascends to Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon at the foot of Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings and struck them down, putting them to death.(K)
17 from Mount Halak and the ascent toward Seir, including as far as Baal-gad in the Lebanon Valley that lies at the foot of Mount Hermon. Joshua captured all of their kings, struck them down, and put them to death.
19 for there was no city that made peace with the children of Israel, save those Hittites that inhabited Gibeon. All other they took with battle,
19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle.
19 There was not a city which made peace with the sons of Israel except (T)the Hivites living in Gibeon; they took them all in battle.
19 No city made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites who inhabited Gibeon;(L) all of them were taken in battle.
19 There wasn't a single city that made a peace accord with the Israelis, except the Hivites who lived in Gibeon. The Israelis captured all the rest in battle,
20 for it came of the LORD to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle: even to destroy them utterly, that they should have no mercy, but to bring them to naught. As the LORD commanded Moses.
20 For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.
20 (U)For it was of the Lord to (h)harden their hearts, to meet Israel in battle in order that he might (V)utterly destroy them, that they might (i)receive no mercy, but that he might destroy them, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
20 For it was the Lord’s intention to harden their hearts, so that they would engage Israel in battle, be completely destroyed without mercy, and be annihilated, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
20 because the LORD had hardened their hearts so they would fight Israel in war, be completely destroyed without mercy, and be completely wiped out, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
21 And that same season, Joshua went and destroyed the Anakims out of the mountains, and out of Hebron, Debir, and Anab, and out of all the mountains of Judah, and out of all the mountains of Israel. And Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities,
21 And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities.
21 Then Joshua came at that time and cut off (W)the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab and from all the hill country of Judah and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.
21 At that time Joshua proceeded to exterminate the Anakim(M) from the hill country—Hebron, Debir, Anab—all the hill country of Judah and of Israel. Joshua completely destroyed them with their cities.
21 At that time Joshua came and annihilated the Anakim from the hill country, that is, from Hebron, Debir, and Anab, as well as from all the hill country of Judah and Israel. Joshua completely destroyed them along with their cities.
22 so that there was not one Anakim left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod, there remained of them.
22 There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained.
22 There were no Anakim left in the land of the sons of Israel; only in Gaza, in (X)Gath, and in (Y)Ashdod some remained.
22 No Anakim were left in the land of the Israelites, except for some remaining in Gaza, Gath,(N) and Ashdod.
22 None of the Anakim remained in the land belonging to the Israelis they remained only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod.
23 And Joshua took the whole land according to all that the LORD said unto Moses, and gave it a possession unto Israel, every man his part in their tribes: and the land rested from war.
23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.
23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the Lord had spoken to Moses, and (Z)Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. (AA)Thus the land had rest from war.
23 So Joshua took the entire land, in keeping with all that the Lord had told Moses. Joshua then gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal allotments. After this, the land had rest from war.(O)
23 Joshua conquered the entire land, in accordance with everything that the LORD had told Moses. Joshua presented it as an inheritance to Israel, dividing it according to tribal allotments. Then the land enjoyed rest from war.
