Some Nations Remain In The Land

11 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to test Israel by them (that is, all who had not experienced any of the wars of Canaan;

11 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

11 These are the nations the Lord left in order to test Israel, since none of these Israelites had fought in any of the wars with Canaan.

11 Here's a list of nations that the LORD caused to remain in order to test Israel (that is, everyone who had not gained any battle experience in Canaan)

11 Now these are the nations which the Lord left to prove Israel by them, that is, all in Israel who had not previously experienced war in Canaan;

22 only in order that the generations of the sons of Israel might be taught war, those who had not experienced it formerly).

22 Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;

22 This was to teach the future generations of the Israelites [how to fight in] battle, especially those who had not fought before.

22 only so that successive Israeli generations, who had not known war previously, might come to know it by experience.

22 It was only that the generations of the Israelites might know and be taught war, at least those who previously knew nothing of it.

33 These nations are: the five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and the Hivites who lived in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath.

33 Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.

33 [These nations included:] the five rulers of the Philistines and all of the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived in the Lebanese mountains from Mount Baal-hermon as far as the entrance to Hamath.

33 These nations included the five lords of the Philistines, all of the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived in Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath.

33 The remaining nations are: the five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt on Mount Lebanon from Mount Baal-hermon to the entrance of Hamath.

44 They were for testing Israel, to find out if they would obey the commandments of the LORD, which He had commanded their fathers through Moses.

44 And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

44 The Lord left them to test Israel, to determine if they would keep the Lord's commands He had given their fathers through Moses.

44 They remained there to test Israel, to reveal if they would obey the commands of the LORD that he issued to their ancestors through Moses.

44 They were for the testing and proving of Israel to know whether Israel would listen and obey the commandments of the Lord, which He commanded their fathers by Moses.

The People Fail The Test

55 The sons of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites;

55 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:

55 But they settled among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

55 The Israelis continued to live among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites,

55 And the Israelites dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites;

66 and they took their daughters for themselves as wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

66 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

66 The Israelites took their daughters as wives for themselves, gave their own daughters to their sons, and worshiped their gods.

66 taking their daughters as wives for themselves, giving their own daughters to their sons, and serving their gods.

66 And they married their daughters and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

Othniel

77 The sons of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth.

77 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.

77 The Israelites did what was evil in the Lord's sight; they forgot the Lord their God and worshiped the Baals and the Asherahs.

77 The Israelis kept on practicing evil in full view of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God and served Canaanite male and female deities.

77 And the Israelites did evil in the sight of the Lord and forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth.

88 Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, so that He sold them into the hands of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the sons of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.

88 Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.

88 The Lord's anger burned against Israel, and He sold them to Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram of the Two Rivers, and the Israelites served him eight years.

88 Then in his burning anger against Israel, the LORD delivered them to domination by King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram-naharaim. So the Israelis served Cushan-rishathaim for eight years.

88 So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the Israelites served Chushan-rishathaim eight years.

99 When the sons of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the sons of Israel to deliver them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

99 And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

99 The Israelites cried out to the Lord. So the Lord raised up Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's youngest brother as a deliverer to save the Israelites.

99 When the Israelis cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up Othniel son of Caleb's younger brother Kenaz, to deliver them, and he did.

99 But when the Israelites cried to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the people of Israel to deliver them, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

1010 The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. When he went out to war, the LORD gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand, so that he prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim.

1010 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.

1010 The Spirit of the Lord was on him, and he judged Israel. Othniel went out to battle, and the Lord handed over Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram to him, so that Othniel overpowered him.

1010 The Spirit of the LORD was on him, and he governed Israel. When Othniel went out to battle, the LORD handed king Cushan-rishathaim of Aram-naharaim into his control, and Othniel's domination of Cushan-rishathaim was strong.

1010 The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand and his hand prevailed over Chushan-rishathaim.

1111 Then the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

1111 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

1111 Then the land was peaceful 40 years, and Othniel son of Kenaz died.

1111 As a result, the land was quiet for 40 years. Then Kenaz' son Othniel died.

1111 And the land had rest forty years. Then Othniel son of Kenaz died.

Ehud

1212 Now the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD So the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

1212 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

1212 The Israelites again did what was evil in the Lord's sight. He gave Eglon king of Moab power over Israel, because they had done what was evil in the Lord's sight.

1212 The Israelis again practiced evil in full view of the LORD. So the LORD strengthened Eglon king of Moab in his control over Israel, because they had practiced evil in full view of the LORD.

1212 And the Israelites again did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord strengthened Eglon king of Moab against Israel because they had done what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

1313 And he gathered to himself the sons of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and defeated Israel, and they possessed the city of the palm trees.

1313 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.

1313 After Eglon convinced the Ammonites and the Amalekites to join forces with him, he attacked and defeated Israel and took possession of the City of Palms.

1313 Eglon assembled together the Ammonites and the Amalekites, proceeded to attack Israel, and captured the cities of palms.

1313 And [Eglon] gathered to him the men of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and they possessed the City of Palm Trees (Jericho).

1414 The sons of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

1414 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

1414 The Israelites served Eglon king of Moab 18 years.

1414 So the Israelis served king Eglon of Moab for eighteen years.

1414 And the Israelites served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.

1515 But when the sons of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for them, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. And the sons of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.

1515 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

1515 Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord, and He raised up Ehud son of Gera, a left-handed Benjaminite, as a deliverer for them. The Israelites sent him to Eglon king of Moab with tribute [money].

1515 But when the Israelis cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up Gera's son Ehud, a left-handed descendant of Benjamin, as a deliverer for them. The Israelis paid tribute through him to king Eglon of Moab.

1515 But when the Israelites cried to the Lord, the Lord raised them up a deliverer, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjamite, a left-handed man; and by him the Israelites sent tribute to Eglon king of Moab.

1616 Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length, and he bound it on his right thigh under his cloak.

1616 But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

1616 Ehud made himself a double-edged sword 18 inches long. He strapped it to his right thigh under his clothes

1616 Ehud forged a double-edged sword that was one cubit long, tied it to his right thigh under his cloak,

1616 Ehud made for himself a sword, a cubit long, which had two edges, and he girded it on his right thigh under his clothing.

1717 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.

1717 And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.

1717 and brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab, who was an extremely fat man.

1717 and went to present the tribute to King Eglon of Moab. Now Eglon happened to be a very obese man.

1717 And he brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.

1818 It came about when he had finished presenting the tribute, that he sent away the people who had carried the tribute.

1818 And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.

1818 When Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he dismissed the people who had carried it.

1818 As he finished presenting the tribute, Ehud sent away the people who had been carrying it.

1818 And when Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who had carried it.

1919 But he himself turned back from the idols which were at Gilgal, and said, "I have a secret message for you, O king." And he said, "Keep silence." And all who attended him left him.

1919 But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

1919 At the carved images near Gilgal he returned and said, "King [Eglon], I have a secret message for you." The king called for silence, and all his attendants left him.

1919 He had turned away from the idols that were at Gilgal. So he told Eglon, "I have a secret message for you, king." King Eglon responded "Silence!" and all of his attendants left him.

1919 He himself went [with them] as far as the sculptured [boundary] stones near Gilgal, and then turned back and came to Eglon and said, I have a secret errand to you, O king. Eglon commanded silence, and all who stood by him went out from him.

2020 Ehud came to him while he was sitting alone in his cool roof chamber. And Ehud said, "I have a message from God for you." And he arose from his seat.

2020 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

2020 Then Ehud approached him while he was sitting alone in his room upstairs [where it was] cool. Ehud said, "I have a word from God for you," and the king stood up from his throne.

2020 Ehud approached him while he was sitting by himself in the cool roof chamber of his palace. He said, "I have a message from God for you!" So when Eglon got up from his seat,

2020 When Ehud had come [near] to him as he was sitting alone in his cool upper apartment, Ehud said, I have a commission from God to execute to you. And the king arose from his seat.

2121 Ehud stretched out his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh and thrust it into his belly.

2121 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:

2121 Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and plunged it into Eglon's belly.

2121 Ehud used his left hand to take the sword from his right thigh and then plunged it into Eglon's abdomen.

2121 Then Ehud put forth his left hand and took the sword from his right thigh and thrust it into Eglon's belly.

2222 The handle also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the sword out of his belly; and the refuse came out.

2222 And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.

2222 Even the handle went in after the blade, and Eglon's fat closed in over it, so that Ehud did not withdraw the sword from his belly. And Eglon's insides came out.

2222 The hilt also penetrated along with the sword blade, and Eglon's fat closed in over the blade. Because he did not withdraw the sword from Eglon's abdomen, the sword point exited from Eglon's entrails.

2222 And the hilt also went in after the blade, and the fat closed upon the blade, for [Ehud] did not draw the sword out of his belly, and the dirt came out.

2323 Then Ehud went out into the vestibule and shut the doors of the roof chamber behind him, and locked them.

2323 Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.

2323 Ehud escaped by way of the porch, closing and locking the doors of the upstairs room behind him.

2323 Then Ehud left the cool chamber in the direction of the vestibule, shutting and locking the doors behind him.

2323 Then Ehud went out into the vestibule and shut the doors of the upper room upon [Eglon] and locked them.

2424 When he had gone out, his servants came and looked, and behold, the doors of the roof chamber were locked; and they said, "He is only relieving himself in the cool room."

2424 When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.

2424 Ehud was gone when Eglon's servants came in. They looked and found the doors of the upstairs room locked and thought he was relieving himself in the cool room.

2424 After he left, Eglon's attendants came to look, but the doors to the cool chamber were locked! So they said, "He must be relieving himself in the inner part of the cool chamber."

2424 When [Ehud] had gone out, [Eglon's] servants came. And when they saw the doors of the upper room were locked, they thought, Surely he [is seeking privacy while he] relieves himself in the closet of the cool chamber.

2525 They waited until they became anxious; but behold, he did not open the doors of the roof chamber. Therefore they took the key and opened them, and behold, their master had fallen to the floor dead.

2525 And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

2525 The servants waited until they became worried and saw that he had still not opened the doors of the upstairs room. So they took the key and opened the doors-and there was their lord lying dead on the floor!

2525 They waited until they were embarrassed, since he never opened the doors to the chamber. Eventually they took a key, opened the doors, and found their master dead on the ground.

2525 They waited a long time until they became embarrassed and uneasy, but when he still did not open the doors of the upper room, they took the key and opened them, and there lay their master fallen to the floor, dead!

2626 Now Ehud escaped while they were delaying, and he passed by the idols and escaped to Seirah.

2626 And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.

2626 Ehud escaped while the servants waited. He crossed over [the Jordan] near the carved images and reached Seirah.

2626 Meanwhile, Ehud escaped while they were delayed, passed by the idols, and escaped in the direction of Seirah.

2626 Ehud escaped while they delayed and passed beyond the sculptured [boundary] stones (images) and escaped to Seirah.

2727 It came about when he had arrived, that he blew the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was in front of them.

2727 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.

2727 After he arrived, he sounded the ram's horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came down with him from the hill country, and he became their leader.

2727 When he arrived there, he sounded a trumpet in the mountainous region of Ephraim. While the Israeli army accompanied Ehud from the mountainous regions,

2727 When he arrived, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went down from the hill country, with him at their head.

2828 He said to them, "Pursue them, for the LORD has given your enemies the Moabites into your hands." So they went down after him and seized the fords of the Jordan opposite Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross.

2828 And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.

2828 He told them, "Follow me, because the Lord has handed over your enemies, the Moabites, to you." So they followed him, captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over.

2828 he told them, "Attack them, because the LORD has given your enemies the Moabites into your control." So the Israeli army followed after him, seized the fords of the Jordan River opposite Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross.

2828 And he said to them, Follow me, for the Lord has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. So they went down after him and seized the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites and permitted not a man to pass over.

2929 They struck down at that time about ten thousand Moabites, all robust and valiant men; and no one escaped.

2929 And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.

2929 At that time they struck down about 10,000 Moabites, all strong and able-bodied men. Not one of them escaped.

2929 At that time they attacked about 10,000 Moabites, all of whom were strong and valiant men. Not one man escaped.

2929 They slew at that time about 10,000 Moabites, all strong, courageous men; not a man escaped.

3030 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land was undisturbed for eighty years.

3030 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

3030 Moab became subject to Israel that day, and the land was peaceful 80 years.

3030 As a result, Moab was subdued under the control of Israel, and the land remained quiet for 80 years.

3030 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel, and the land had peace and rest for eighty years.

Shamgar

3131 After him came Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad; and he also saved Israel.

3131 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.

3131 After Ehud, Shamgar son of Anath [became judge]. He delivered Israel by striking down 600 Philistines with an oxgoad.

3131 After Ehud, Anath's son Shamgar attacked 600 Philistines with a cattle prod. He also delivered Israel.

3131 After [Ehud] was Shamgar son of Anath, who slew 600 Philistine men with an oxgoad. He also delivered Israel.
