Israel Disobeys Yahweh

11 Now the angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim And he said, "I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land which I have sworn to your fathers; and I said, 'I will never break My covenant with you,

11 And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

11 The Angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bochim and said, "I brought you out of Egypt and led you into the land I had promised to your fathers. I also said: I will never break My covenant with you.

11 Some time later, the angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim and announced to Israel, "I brought you up from Egypt and led you into the land that I promised to your ancestors. I had told them, "I'll never breach my covenant with you.

11 Now the Angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bochim. And He said, I brought you up from Egypt and have brought you to the land which I swore to give to your fathers, and I said, I will never break My covenant with you;

22 and as for you, you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.' But you have not obeyed Me; what is this you have done?

22 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?

22 You are not to make a covenant with the people who are living in this land, and you are to tear down their altars. But you have not obeyed Me. What is this you have done?

22 As for you, you must not make any treaties with the inhabitants of this land. Instead, tear down their altars.' But you haven't obeyed me. What have you done?

22 And you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; but you shall break down their altars. But you have not obeyed My voice. Why have you done this?

33 "Therefore I also said, 'I will not drive them out before you; but they will become as thorns in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you.'"

33 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

33 Therefore, I now say: I will not drive out these people before you. They will be thornsin your sides, and their gods will be a trap to you."

33 Therefore I'm now saying, "I won't expel them before you. Instead, they'll remain at your side, and their gods will ensnare you.'"

33 So now I say, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.

44 When the angel of the LORD spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, the people lifted up their voices and wept.

44 And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

44 When the Angel of the Lord had spoken these words to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly.

44 Because the angel of the LORD said these things to all of the Israelis, the people wept out loud,

44 When the Angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the Israelites, the people lifted up their voice and wept.

55 So they named that place Bochim; and there they sacrificed to the LORD.

55 And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.

55 So they named that place Bochim and offered sacrifices there to the Lord.

55 which is why they named the place Bochim. And there they sacrificed to the LORD.

55 They named that place Bochim [weepers], and they sacrificed there to the Lord.

Joshua's Death

66 When Joshua had dismissed the people, the sons of Israel went each to his inheritance to possess the land.

66 And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.

66 Joshua sent the people away, and the Israelites went to take possession of the land, each to his own inheritance.

66 After Joshua had dismissed the people, the Israelis returned to their respective inheritances to take possession of the land.

66 And when Joshua had let the people go, the Israelites went every man to his inheritance to possess the land.

77 The people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who survived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the LORD which He had done for Israel.

77 And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.

77 The people worshiped the Lord throughout Joshua's lifetime and during the lifetimes of the elders who outlived Joshua. They had seen all the Lord's great works He had done for Israel.

77 The people served the LORD during the entire lifetime of Joshua as well as the lifetimes of all the elders who outlived Joshua and who had observed all the great deeds that the LORD had done for Israel.

77 And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord which He did for Israel.

88 Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of one hundred and ten.

88 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.

88 Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110.

88 But then Nun's son Joshua, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110 years.

88 And Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being 110 years old.

99 And they buried him in the territory of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

99 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathheres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.

99 They buried him in the territory of his inheritance, in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

99 They buried him in Timnath-heres, within the boundaries of his inheritance in the mountainous region of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

99 And they buried him within the boundary of his inheritance in Timnath-heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

Israel Disobeys The Lord

1010 All that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD, nor yet the work which He had done for Israel.

1010 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.

1010 That whole generation was also gathered to their ancestors. After them another generation rose up who did not know the Lord or the works He had done for Israel.

1010 After that whole generation had died, another generation grew up after them that was not acquainted with the LORD or with what he had done for Israel.

1010 And also all that generation were gathered to their fathers, and there arose another generation after them who did not know (recognize, understand) the Lord, or even the work which He had done for Israel.

Israel Worships The Baals

1111 Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals,

1111 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim:

1111 The Israelites did what was evil in the Lord's sight. They worshiped the Baals

1111 So the Israelis practiced what the LORD considered to be evil by worshiping Canaanite deities.

1111 And the people of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals.

1212 and they forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them; thus they provoked the LORD to anger.

1212 And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger.

1212 and abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of Egypt. They went after other gods from the surrounding peoples and bowed down to them. They infuriated the Lord,

1212 They abandoned the LORD God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods from among the gods of the nations who surrounded them. They bowed down in worship of them, and by doing so angered the LORD.

1212 And they forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers, Who brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods of the peoples round about them and bowed down to them, and provoked the Lord to anger.

1313 So they forsook the LORD and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

1313 And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

1313 for they abandoned Him and worshiped Baal and the Ashtoreths.

1313 As a result, they abandoned the LORD by serving both Baal and Ashtaroth.

1313 And they forsook the Lord and served Baal [the god worshiped by the Canaanites] and the Ashtaroth [female deities such as Ashtoreth and Asherah].

1414 The anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He gave them into the hands of plunderers who plundered them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies around them, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.

1414 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

1414 The Lord's anger burned against Israel, and He handed them over to marauders who raided them. He sold them to the enemies around them, so that they could no longer resist their enemies.

1414 So in his burning anger against Israel, the LORD gave them into the domination of marauders who plundered them. The enemies who surrounded the Israelis controlled them, and they were no longer able to withstand their adversaries.

1414 So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and He gave them into the power of plunderers who robbed them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could no longer stand before their foes.

1515 Wherever they went, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had spoken and as the LORD had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed.

1515 Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.

1515 Whenever the Israelites went out, the Lord was against them and brought disaster [on them], just as He had promised and sworn to them. So they suffered greatly.

1515 Wherever they went, the LORD worked against them to bring misfortune, just as the LORD had warned, and just as the LORD had promised them. As a result, they suffered greatly.

1515 Whenever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn to them; and they were bitterly distressed.

The Lord Raises Up Judges

1616 Then the LORD raised up judges who delivered them from the hands of those who plundered them.

1616 Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.

1616 The Lord raised up judges, who saved them from the power of their marauders,

1616 Then the LORD raised up leaders, who delivered Israel from domination by their marauders.

1616 But the Lord raised up judges, who delivered them out of the hands of those who robbed them.

1717 Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they played the harlot after other gods and bowed themselves down to them. They turned aside quickly from the way in which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of the LORD; they did not do as their fathers.

1717 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.

1717 but they did not listen to their judges. Instead, they prostituted themselves with other gods, bowing down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the Lord's commands. They did not do as their fathers did.

1717 But they didn't listen to their leaders, because they were committing spiritual immorality by following other gods and worshiping them. They quickly turned away from the road on which their ancestors had walked in obedience to the commands of the LORD. They didn't follow their example.

1717 And yet they did not listen to their judges, for they played the harlot after other gods and bowed down to them. They turned quickly out of the way in which their fathers had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the Lord, and they did not so.

1818 When the LORD raised up judges for them, the LORD was with the judge and delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the LORD was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed and afflicted them.

1818 And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

1818 Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for the Israelites, the Lord was with him and saved the people from the power of their enemies while the judge was still alive. The Lord was moved to pity whenever they groaned because of those who were oppressing and afflicting them.

1818 As a result, whenever the LORD raised up leaders for them, the LORD remained present with their leader, delivering Israel from the control of their enemies during the lifetime of that leader. The LORD was moved with compassion by their groaning that had been caused by those who were oppressing and persecuting them.

1818 When the Lord raised them up judges, then He was with the judge and delivered them out of the hands of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was moved to relent because of their groanings by reason of those who oppressed and vexed them.

1919 But it came about when the judge died, that they would turn back and act more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them and bow down to them; they did not abandon their practices or their stubborn ways.

1919 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

1919 Whenever the judge died, the Israelites would act even more corruptly than their fathers, going after other gods to worship and bow down to them. They did not turn from their [evil] practices or their obstinate ways.

1919 However, after the leader had died, they would relapse to a condition more corrupt than their ancestors, following other gods, serving them, and worshiping them. They would not abandon their activities or their obstinate lifestyles.

1919 But when the judge was dead, they turned back and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, following and serving other gods, and bowing down to them. They did not cease from their practices or their stubborn way.

The Lord Allows The Nations To Stay In Order To Test His People

2020 So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, "Because this nation has transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers and has not listened to My voice,

2020 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;

2020 The Lord's anger burned against Israel, and He declared, "Because this nation has violated My covenant that I made with their fathers and disobeyed Me,

2020 In his burning anger against Israel, the LORD said, "Because the people have transgressed my covenant that I commanded their ancestors to keep, and because they haven't obeyed me,

2020 So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel; and He said, Because this people have transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers and have not listened to My voice,

2121 I also will no longer drive out before them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died,

2121 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:

2121 I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died.

2121 I'm also going to stop expelling any of the nations that remained after Joshua died.

2121 I from now on will also not drive out from before them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died,

2222 in order to test Israel by them, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk in it as their fathers did, or not."

2222 That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.

2222 [I did this] to test Israel and to see whether they would keep the Lord's way by walking in it, as their fathers had."

2222 That way, I'll use them to demonstrate whether or not Israel will keep the LORD's lifestyle by walking on that road like their ancestors did."

2222 That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the Lord to walk in it, as their fathers kept it, or not.

2323 So the LORD allowed those nations to remain, not driving them out quickly; and He did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

2323 Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

2323 The Lord left these nations and did not drive them out immediately. He did not hand them over to Joshua.

2323 So the LORD caused those nations to remain and did not expel them quickly. He did not give them into Joshua's control.

2323 So the Lord left those nations, without driving them out at once, nor had He delivered them into Joshua's power.
