So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.
In the beginning
At the morning watch,
the Lord looked down on the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and cloud and brought the army of the Egyptians into confusion.
But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’

For you yourselves know full well that
the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night.
I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, so that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame.”)
the 300 men took the people’s provisions and their trumpets into their hands. And Gideon sent all the other men of Israel, each to his tent, but retained the 300 men; and the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.
He divided the 300 men into three
companies, and he put trumpets and empty pitchers into the hands of all of them, with torches inside the pitchers.
‘You shall break them with a rod of iron,
shatter them like earthenware.’”
then say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Behold I am about to fill all the inhabitants of this land—the kings that sit for David on his throne, the priests, the prophets and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem—with
Thus says the Lord, “Go and buy a
potter’s earthenware jar, and take some of the elders of the people and some of the senior priests.
five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall before you by the sword.
The Lord said to Gideon, “I will deliver you
with the 300 men who lapped and will give the Midianites into your hands; so let all the other people go, each man to his home.”
