Priests And Their Food

1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

1 The Lord spoke to Moses:

1 Later on, the LORD told Moses,

2 “Tell Aaron and his sons to be careful with the holy things (offerings, gifts) which the children of Israel dedicate to Me, so that they do not profane My holy name; I am the Lord.

2 “Tell Aaron and his sons to be careful with the holy gifts of the sons of Israel, which they dedicate to Me, so as not to profane My holy name; I am the Lord.

2 Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel, and that they profane not my holy name in those things which they hallow unto me: I am the LORD.

2 “Tell Aaron and his sons to deal respectfully with the holy offerings of the Israelites that they have consecrated to Me, so they do not profane My holy name;(A) I am Yahweh.

2 "Tell Aaron and his sons that they are to separate themselves for the sacred things of the Israelis and that they are not to defile my holy name. I am the LORD.

3 Say to them, ‘Any one of your descendants throughout your generations who approaches the holy things which the Israelites dedicate to the Lord, while he is [ceremonially] unclean, that person shall be cut off from My presence and excluded from the sanctuary; I am the Lord.

3 Say to them, ‘(A)If any man among all your (a)descendants throughout your generations approaches the holy gifts which the sons of Israel dedicate to the Lord, while he has an uncleanness, that person shall be cut off from before Me; I am the Lord.

3 Say unto them, Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations, that goeth unto the holy things, which the children of Israel hallow unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, that soul shall be cut off from my presence: I am the LORD.

3 Say to them: If any man from any of your descendants throughout your generations is in a state of uncleanness yet approaches the holy offerings that the Israelites consecrate to the Lord, that person will be cut off from My presence; I am Yahweh.

3 Tell them that whoever among your descendants throughout your generations approaches the sacred things that the Israelis had consecrated to the LORD while still remaining unclean is to be eliminated from my presence. I am the LORD.

4 No man of the descendants of Aaron who is a leper or has a discharge may eat the holy things [the offerings and the showbread] until he is clean. And whoever touches any person or thing made unclean by contact with a corpse or a man who has had a seminal emission,

4 (B)No man of the (b)descendants of Aaron, who is a leper or who has a discharge, may eat of the holy gifts until he is clean. (C)And if one touches anything made unclean by a corpse or if (D)a man has a seminal emission,

4 What man soever of the seed of Aaron is a leper, or hath a running issue; he shall not eat of the holy things, until he be clean. And whoso toucheth any thing that is unclean by the dead, or a man whose seed goeth from him;

4 No man of Aaron’s descendants who has a skin disease(a) or a discharge is to eat from the holy offerings until he is clean. Whoever touches anything made unclean by a dead person or by a man who has an emission of semen,

4 If one of Aaron's descendants has an infectious skin disease or a discharge, he is not to eat anything sacred until he has been cleansed. Anyone who touches an unclean thing on account of the dead, or who has a seminal discharge,

5 or whoever touches any crawling thing by which he is made unclean, or any person by whom he is made unclean, whatever it may be,(A)

5 or (E)if a man touches any teeming things by which he is made unclean, or any man by whom he is made unclean, whatever his uncleanness;

5 Or whosoever toucheth any creeping thing, whereby he may be made unclean, or a man of whom he may take uncleanness, whatsoever uncleanness he hath;

5 or whoever touches any swarming creature that makes him unclean or any person who makes him unclean—whatever his uncleanness—

5 or who becomes unclean by touching a creeping creature or another human being, whatever the uncleanness may be

6 the person who touches any such thing shall be unclean until evening and shall not eat the holy things unless he has bathed his body in water.(B)

6 a (c)person who touches any such shall be unclean until evening, and shall not eat of the holy gifts unless he has bathed his (d)body in water.

6 The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean until even, and shall not eat of the holy things, unless he wash his flesh with water.

6 the man who touches any of these will remain unclean until evening(B) and is not to eat from the holy offerings unless he has bathed his body with water.

6 such a person who comes in contact with anything like this will become unclean until evening. As a result, he is not to eat the sacred things unless he has bathed himself with water.

7 When the sun sets, he will be clean, and afterward he may eat the holy things, for it is his food.

7 But when the sun sets, he will be clean, and afterward he shall eat of the holy gifts, for (F)it is his (e)food.

7 And when the sun is down, he shall be clean, and shall afterward eat of the holy things; because it is his food.

7 When the sun has set, he will become clean, and then he may eat from the holy offerings, for that is his food.(C)

7 When the sun has gone down and he has been cleansed, he may eat of the sacred things, since that's his food.

8 He shall not eat that which dies [of natural causes] or is torn by a predator, becoming unclean by it; I am the Lord.

8 He shall not eat (G)an animal which dies or is torn by beasts, becoming unclean by it; I am the Lord.

8 That which dieth of itself, or is torn with beasts, he shall not eat to defile himself therewith: I am the LORD.

8 He must not eat an animal that died naturally or was mauled by wild beasts,(b)(D) making himself unclean by it; I am Yahweh.

8 He is not to eat the carcass of an animal that was torn by animals, thereby defiling himself with it. I am the LORD.

9 Therefore the priests shall observe My ordinance, so that they will not bear sin because of it and die if they profane it; I am the Lord who sanctifies them.

9 They shall therefore keep (H)My charge, so that (I)they will not bear sin because of it and die thereby because they profane it; I am the Lord who sanctifies them.

9 They shall therefore keep mine ordinance, lest they bear sin for it, and die therefore, if they profane it: I the LORD do sanctify them.

9 They must keep My instruction,(E) or they will be guilty and die because they profane it; I am Yahweh who sets them apart.

9 They are to keep my charge. By doing so, they won't bear the punishment of sin because of it and therefore die if they've been defiled by it. I am the LORD, who sets them apart."

10 ‘No layman [that is, someone outside of Aaron’s family] is to eat the holy gift [which has been offered to God]; a foreigner residing with the priest or a hired man shall not eat the holy thing.

10 (J)No (f)layman, however, is to eat the holy gift; a sojourner with the priest or a hired man shall not eat of the holy gift.

10 There shall no stranger eat of the holy thing: a sojourner of the priest, or an hired servant, shall not eat of the holy thing.

10 “No one outside a priest’s family(c)(F) is to eat the holy offering. A foreigner staying with a priest or a hired hand is not to eat the holy offering.

10 "No resident alien is to eat anything sacred. Neither the visitor of the priest nor a hired laborer is to eat anything sacred.

11 But if a priest buys a slave as his property with his money, the slave may eat the holy thing, and those who are born in the priest’s house; they may eat his food.

11 (K)But if a priest buys a (g)slave as his property with his money, (h)that one may eat of it, and those who are born in his house may eat of his (i)food.

11 But if the priest buy any soul with his money, he shall eat of it, and he that is born in his house: they shall eat of his meat.

11 But if a priest purchases someone with his money, that person may eat it, and those born in his house may eat his food.

11 If a priest acquires a slave as property with his own money, he may eat with him. Those who were born in his house may eat his food.

12 If a priest’s daughter is married to a layman [one not part of the priestly tribe], she shall not eat the offering of the holy things.

12 If a priest’s daughter is married to a (j)layman, she shall not eat of the (k)offering of the gifts.

12 If the priest's daughter also be married unto a stranger, she may not eat of an offering of the holy things.

12 If the priest’s daughter is married to a man outside a priest’s family,(d) she is not to eat from the holy contributions.(e)

12 If a priest's daughter marries a resident alien, she is not to eat the sacred raised offerings.

13 But if a priest’s daughter is a widow or divorced, and has no child, and returns to her father’s house as in her youth, she shall eat her father’s food; but no layman shall eat it.

13 But if a priest’s daughter becomes a widow or divorced, and has no child and returns to her father’s house as in her youth, she shall eat of her father’s (l)food; (L)but no (m)layman shall eat of it.

13 But if the priest's daughter be a widow, or divorced, and have no child, and is returned unto her father's house, as in her youth, she shall eat of her father's meat: but there shall no stranger eat thereof.

13 But if the priest’s daughter becomes widowed or divorced, has no children, and returns to her father’s house as in her youth, she may share her father’s food. But no outsider may share it.

13 If the priest's daughter is a widow, or is divorced and childless, so that she has to return to her father's house as in her younger days, she may eat her father's food, but no resident alien may eat it.

14 But if a person unknowingly eats a holy gift [which has been offered to God], then he shall add one-fifth of its value to it and give the holy gift to the priest.

14 (M)But if a man eats a holy gift unintentionally, then he shall add to it a fifth of it and shall give the holy gift to the priest.

14 And if a man eat of the holy thing unwittingly, then he shall put the fifth part thereof unto it, and shall give it unto the priest with the holy thing.

14 If anyone eats a holy offering in error,(G) he must add a fifth to its value and give the holy offering to the priest.(H)

14 If a person eats anything sacred inadvertently, he is to add a fifth part to it and then give the sacred thing to the priest.

15 The priests shall not profane the holy things the Israelites offer to the Lord,

15 (N)They shall not profane the holy gifts of the sons of Israel which they offer to the Lord,

15 And they shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, which they offer unto the LORD;

15 The priests must not profane the holy offerings the Israelites give to the Lord

15 They are not to defile the sacred things of the Israelis that they have offered to the LORD,

16 and so cause them [by neglect of any essential observance] to bear the (a)punishment of guilt when they eat their holy things; for I am the Lord who sanctifies them.’”

16 and so cause them (O)to bear (n)punishment for guilt by eating their holy gifts; for I am the Lord who sanctifies them.’”

16 Or suffer them to bear the iniquity of trespass, when they eat their holy things: for I the LORD do sanctify them.

16 by letting the people eat their holy offerings and having them bear the penalty of restitution.(I) For I am Yahweh who sets them apart.”

16 thereby causing them to bear the punishment of their iniquity for wrongdoing when they eat their sacred things, because I am the LORD, who sets them apart."

18 Speak unto Aaron, and to his sons, and unto all the children of Israel, and say unto them, Whatsoever he be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers in Israel, that will offer his oblation for all his vows, and for all his freewill offerings, which they will offer unto the LORD for a burnt offering;

18 “Speak to Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelites and tell them: Any man of the house of Israel or of the foreign residents(J) in Israel who presents his offering(K)—whether they present freewill gifts or payment of vows to the Lord as burnt offerings—

19 Ye shall offer at your own will a male without blemish, of the beeves, of the sheep, or of the goats.

19 must offer an unblemished male(L) from the cattle, sheep, or goats in order for you to be accepted.

19 so that he'll be sure to be accepted, he is to offer a male without defect from the bulls, the lambs, and the goats.

20 You shall not offer anything which has a blemish, because it will not be accepted for you.(C)

20 (R)Whatever has a defect, you shall not offer, for it will not be accepted for you.

20 But whatsoever hath a blemish, that shall ye not offer: for it shall not be acceptable for you.

20 You are not to present anything that has a defect, because it will not be accepted on your behalf.

20 However, whatever has a defect is not to be offered, because it won't be acceptable for you.

21 Whoever offers a sacrifice of peace offerings to the Lord to fulfill a special vow to the Lord or as a freewill offering from the herd or from the flock, it must be perfect to be accepted; there shall be no blemish in it.

21 When a man offers a sacrifice of peace offerings to the Lord (S)to (p)fulfill a special vow or for a freewill offering, of the herd or of the flock, it must be perfect to be accepted; there shall be no defect in it.

21 And whosoever offereth a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD to accomplish his vow, or a freewill offering in beeves or sheep, it shall be perfect to be accepted; there shall be no blemish therein.

21 “When a man presents a fellowship sacrifice to the Lord to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering from the herd or flock, it has to be unblemished to be acceptable; there must be no defect in it.

21 "If a person brings a peace offering sacrifice to the LORD to fulfill a vow or a free will offering from the herd or the flock, it is to be sound in order to be accepted, without any defect in it.

22 Animals that are blind or fractured or mutilated, or have a sore or a running wound or an itch or scabs, you shall not offer to the Lord nor make an offering of them by fire on the altar to the Lord.

22 Those that are blind or fractured or maimed or having a running sore or eczema or scabs, you shall not offer to the Lord, nor make of them an offering by fire on the altar to the Lord.

22 Blind, or broken, or maimed, or having a wen, or scurvy, or scabbed, ye shall not offer these unto the LORD, nor make an offering by fire of them upon the altar unto the LORD.

22 You are not to bring to the LORD an offering that is blind, fractured, mutilated, or infected with ulcers, scurvy, or scales. You are not to present any of them as an offering made by fire on the altar for the LORD.

23 For a freewill offering you may offer either a bull or a lamb which has an overgrown or stunted member (deformity), but for [the payment of] a vow it will not be accepted.

23 In respect to an ox or a lamb which has an (q)overgrown or stunted member, you may present it for a freewill offering, but for a vow it will not be accepted.

23 Either a bullock or a lamb that hath any thing superfluous or lacking in his parts, that mayest thou offer for a freewill offering; but for a vow it shall not be accepted.

23 You may sacrifice as a freewill offering any animal from the herd or flock that has an elongated or stunted limb, but it is not acceptable as a vow offering.

23 "You may offer a bull or lamb that has one limb longer than the other or that is stunted as a free will offering, but it's not acceptable in fulfillment of a promise.

24 You shall not offer to the Lord any animal which has its testicles bruised or crushed or torn or cut off, or sacrifice it in your land.

24 Also (T)anything with its testicles bruised or crushed or torn or cut, you shall not offer to the Lord, or (r)sacrifice in your land,

24 Ye shall not offer unto the LORD that which is bruised, or crushed, or broken, or cut; neither shall ye make any offering thereof in your land.

24 You are not to present to the Lord anything that has bruised, crushed, torn, or severed testicles;(O) you must not sacrifice them in your land.

24 You are not to bring to the LORD an animal that has been emasculated, crushed, torn, or cut apart. You are not to practice this in your land.

25 Nor shall you offer as the food of your God any such [animals obtained] from a foreigner, because their corruption and blemish makes them unfit; there is a defect in them, they shall not be accepted for you.’”

25 nor shall you accept any such from the hand of a foreigner for offering (U)as the (s)food of your God; for their corruption is in them, they have a defect, they shall not be accepted for you.’”

25 Neither from a stranger's hand shall ye offer the bread of your God of any of these; because their corruption is in them, and blemishes be in them: they shall not be accepted for you.

25 Neither you nor(f) a foreigner are to present food to your God from any of these animals. They will not be accepted for you because they are deformed and have a defect.”(P)

25 A resident alien is not to offer as food to your God any of these items, because they are afflicted with ritual corruption due to their defects. They're not acceptable for you."

26 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

26 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

26 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

26 The Lord spoke to Moses:

26 The LORD told Moses,

27 “When a bull or a sheep or a goat is born, it shall remain for seven days with its mother; and after the eighth day it shall be accepted as an offering by fire to the Lord.

27 “When an ox or a sheep or a goat is born, it shall (t)remain (V)seven days (u)with its mother, and from the eighth day on it shall be accepted as a sacrifice of an offering by fire to the Lord.

27 When a bullock, or a sheep, or a goat, is brought forth, then it shall be seven days under the dam; and from the eighth day and thenceforth it shall be accepted for an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

27 “When an ox, sheep, or goat is born, it must remain with(g) its mother for seven days; from the eighth day(Q) on, it will be acceptable as a gift, a fire offering to the Lord.

27 "Whenever a bull, a sheep, or a goat is born, it is to remain for seven days under the care of its mother. But on the eighth day onwards, it may be accepted as an offering made by fire to the LORD.

28 And whether [the mother] is a cow or a sheep, you shall not kill both it and its young in one day.

28 (W)But, whether it is an ox or a sheep, you shall not kill both it and its young in one day.

28 And whether it be cow or ewe, ye shall not kill it and her young both in one day.

28 But you are not to slaughter an animal from the herd or flock on the same day as its young.(R)

28 However, you are not to slaughter a bull or a ewe along with its offspring on the same day.

29 When you sacrifice an offering of thanksgiving to the Lord, you shall sacrifice it so that you may be accepted.

29 When you sacrifice (X)a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, you shall sacrifice it so that you may be accepted.

29 And when ye will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving unto the LORD, offer it at your own will.

29 When you sacrifice a thank offering(S) to the Lord, sacrifice it so that you may be accepted.

29 When you offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the LORD, bring it so that it's acceptable for you.

30 It shall be eaten on the same day; you shall leave none of it until the next morning; I am the Lord.

30 It shall be eaten on the same day, you shall leave none of it until morning; I am the Lord.

30 On the same day it shall be eaten up; ye shall leave none of it until the morrow: I am the LORD.

30 It is to be eaten on the same day.(T) Do not let any of it remain until morning; I am Yahweh.

30 It is to be eaten that same day. You are not to leave any of it until morning. I am the LORD.

31 So you shall keep My commandments and do them; I am the Lord.

31 (Y)So you shall keep My commandments, and do them; I am the Lord.

31 Therefore shall ye keep my commandments, and do them: I am the LORD.

31 “You are to keep My commands and do them; I am Yahweh.

31 "Keep my commands and observe them. I am the LORD.

32 “You shall not profane My holy name [using it to honor an idol, or treating it with irreverence or contempt or as a byword]; but I will be sanctified (set apart as holy) among the Israelites. I am the Lord, who sanctifies and declares you holy,

32 “You shall not profane My holy name, but I will be sanctified among the sons of Israel; I am the Lord who sanctifies you,

32 Neither shall ye profane my holy name; but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel: I am the LORD which hallow you,

32 You must not profane My holy name; I must be treated as holy(U) among the Israelites. I am Yahweh who sets you apart,

32 "You are not to defile my sacred name, because I've been set apart in the midst of the Israelis. Furthermore, I am the LORD, who sets you apart

33 who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God; I am the Lord.”

33 (Z)who brought you out from the land of Egypt, to be your God; I am the Lord.”

33 That brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD.

33 the One who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God; I am Yahweh.”

33 who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD."
