A Man Suffering From Edema Healed

1 And it happened that when he came to the house of a certain one of the leaders of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat {a meal}, they were watching him closely.

1 It happened that when He went into the house of one of the (a)leaders of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, (A)they were watching Him closely.

1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

1 One Sabbath, when He went to eat(a) at the house of one of the leading Pharisees,(A) they were watching Him closely.(B)

1 One Sabbath, Jesus went to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal. The guests were watching Jesus closely.

2 And behold, a certain man was in front of him, suffering from edema.

2 And (b)there in front of Him was a man suffering from dropsy.

2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

2 There in front of Him was a man whose body was swollen with fluid.(b)

2 A man whose body was swollen with fluid suddenly appeared in front of him.

3 And Jesus answered [and] said to the legal experts and Pharisees, saying, "Is it permitted to heal on the Sabbath, or not?"

3 And Jesus answered and spoke to the (c)(B)lawyers and Pharisees, saying, (C)Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?”

3 And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

3 In response, Jesus asked the law experts(C) and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”(D)

3 So Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the Law, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?"

4 But they remained silent. And he took hold of [him] [and] healed him, and sent [him] away.

4 But they kept silent. And He took hold of him and healed him, and sent him away.

4 And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;

4 But they kept silent. He took the man, healed him, and sent him away.

4 But they kept silent. So he took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him away.

5 And he said to them, "Who among you, [if your] son or [your] ox falls into a well on the day of the Sabbath, will not immediately pull him out?"

5 And He said to them, (d)(D)Which one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?”

5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

5 And to them, He said, “Which of you whose son or ox falls into a well, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?”(E)

5 Then he asked them, "If your son or ox falls into a well on the Sabbath day, you would pull him out immediately, wouldn't you?"

6 And they were not able to make a reply to these [things].

6 (E)And they could make no reply to this.

6 And they could not answer him again to these things.

6 To this they could find no answer.

6 And they couldn't argue with him about this.

The Parable Of The Guests At The Wedding Feast

7 Now he told a parable to those who had been invited [when he] noticed how they were choosing for themselves the places of honor, saying to them,

7 And He began speaking a parable to the invited guests when He noticed how (F)they had been picking out the places of honor at the table, saying to them,

7 And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,

7 He told a parable(F) to those who were invited, when He noticed how they would choose the best places(G) for themselves:

7 When Jesus noticed how the guests were choosing the places of honor, he told them a parable.

8 "When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not recline at the table in the place of honor, lest [someone] more distinguished than you has been invited by him,

8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, (G)do not (e)take the place of honor, for someone more distinguished than you may have been invited by him,

8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;

8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, don’t recline at the best place, because a more distinguished person(H) than you may have been invited by your host.(c)

8 "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, don't sit down at the place of honor in case someone more important than you was invited by the host.

9 and the one who invited you {both} will come [and] say to you, 'Give the place to this person,' and then with shame you will begin to take the last place.

9 and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then (H)in disgrace you (f)proceed to occupy the last place.

9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

9 The one who invited both of you may come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then in humiliation, you will proceed to take the lowest place.

9 Then the host who invited both of you would come to you and say, "Give this person your place.' In disgrace, you would have to take the place of least honor.

10 But when you are invited, go [and] recline at the table in the last place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up higher.' Then it will be an honor to you in the presence of all those who are reclining at the table with you.

10 But when you are invited, go and recline at the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, (I)move up higher’; then you will have honor in the sight of all who (g)are at the table with you.

10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

10 “But when you are invited, go and recline in the lowest place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ You will then be honored(I) in the presence of all the other guests.(J)

10 But when you are invited, go and sit down at the place of least honor. Then, when your host comes, he will tell you, "Friend, move up higher,' and you will be honored in the presence of everyone who eats with you.

11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

11 (J)For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”(K)

11 Because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the person who humbles himself will be exalted."

The Parable Of The Great Banquet

12 And he also said to the one who had invited him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or wealthy neighbors, lest they also invite you [in return], and repayment come to you.

12 And He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you in return and that will be your repayment.

12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.

12 He also said to the one who had invited Him, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, don’t invite your friends, your brothers, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, because they might invite you back, and you would be repaid.

12 Then he told the man who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, stop inviting only your friends, brothers, relatives, or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they may invite you in return and you would be repaid.

13 But whenever you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,

13 But when you give a (h)reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,

13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

13 On the contrary, when you host a banquet,(L) invite those who are poor, maimed, lame, or blind.(M)

13 Instead, when you give a banquet, make it your habit to invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.

14 and you will be blessed, because they are not able to repay you. For it will be paid back to you at the resurrection of the righteous."

14 and you will be blessed, since they (i)do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at (K)the resurrection of the righteous.”

14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

14 And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you will be repaid(N) at the resurrection of the righteous.”(O)

14 Then you will be blessed because they can't repay you. And you will be repaid when the righteous are resurrected."

The Parable Of The Large Banquet

15 Now [when] one of those reclining at the table with [him] heard these [things], he said to him, "Blessed [is] {everyone who} will eat bread in the kingdom of God!"

15 When one of those who were reclining at the table with Him heard this, he said to Him, “(L)Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”

15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

15 When(P) one of those who reclined at the table with Him heard these things, he said to Him, “The one who will eat bread in the kingdom of God(Q) is blessed!”

15 Now one of those eating with him heard this and told him, "How blessed is the person who will eat in the kingdom of God!"

16 But he said to him, "A certain man was giving a large banquet and invited many.

16 But He said to him, (M)A man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many;

16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:

16 Then He told him: “A man was giving a large banquet and invited many.

16 Jesus told him, "A man gave a large banquet and invited many people.

17 And he sent his slave at the hour of the banquet to say to those who have been invited, 'Come, because now it is ready!'

17 and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come; for everything is ready now.’

17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

17 At the time of the banquet, he sent his slave to tell those who were invited, ‘Come, because everything is now ready.’

17 When it was time for the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who were invited, "Come! Everything is now ready.'

18 And they all {alike} began to excuse themselves. The first said to him, 'I have purchased a field, and {I must} go out to look at it. I ask you, consider me excused.'

18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, ‘I have bought a (j)piece of land and I need to go out and look at it; (k)please consider me excused.’

18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

18 “But without exception(d) they all began to make excuses. The first one said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. I ask you to excuse me.’

18 Every single one of them began asking to be excused. The first told him, "I bought a field, and I need to go out and inspect it. Please excuse me.'

19 And another said, 'I have purchased five yoke of oxen, and I am going to examine them. I ask you, consider me excused.'

19 Another one said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; (l)please consider me excused.’

19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.

19 “Another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m going to try them out. I ask you to excuse me.’

19 Another said, "I bought five pairs of oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.'

20 And another said, 'I have married a wife, and for this [reason] I am not able to come.'

20 Another one said, ‘(N)I have married a wife, and for that reason I cannot come.’

20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

20 “And another said, ‘I just got married,(e)(R) and therefore I’m unable to come.’

20 Still another said, "I recently got married, so I can't come.'

21 And the slave came [and] reported these [things] to his master. Then the master of the house became angry [and] said to his slave, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame!'

21 And the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the head of the household became angry and said to his slave, ‘Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’

21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

21 “So the slave came back and reported these things to his master. Then in anger, the master of the house told his slave, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in here the poor, maimed, blind, and lame!’(S)

21 "So the servant went back and reported all this to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and told his servant, "Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring back the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.'

22 And the slave said, 'Sir, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.'

22 And the slave said, ‘Master, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’

22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

22 “‘Master,’ the slave said, ‘what you ordered has been done, and there’s still room.’

22 The servant said, "Sir, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.'

23 And the master said to the slave, 'Go out into the highways and hedges and press [them] to come in, so that my house will be filled!

23 And the master said to the slave, ‘Go out into the highways and along the hedges, and compel them to come in, so that my house may be filled.

23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

23 “Then the master told the slave, ‘Go out into the highways and lanes and make them come in, so that my house may be filled.

23 Then the master told the servant, "Go out into the streets and the lanes and make the people come in, so that my house may be full.

24 For I say to you that none of those persons who were invited will taste my banquet!'"

24 For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste of my dinner.’”

24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

24 For I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will enjoy my banquet!’”

24 Because I tell all of you, none of those men who were invited will taste anything at my banquet.'"

The Cost Of Discipleship

25 Now large crowds were going along with him, and he turned around [and] said to them,

25 Now (m)large crowds were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them,

25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

25 Now(T) great crowds were traveling with Him. So He turned and said to them:

25 Now large crowds were traveling with Jesus. He turned and told them,

26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, and furthermore, even his own life, {he cannot be} my disciple.

26 (O)If anyone comes to Me, and does not (n)hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.

26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

26 “If anyone comes to Me(U) and does not hate(V) his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, and even his own life—he cannot be My disciple.

26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, as well as his own life, he can't be my disciple.

27 Whoever does not carry his own cross and {follow} me {cannot be} my disciple.

27 Whoever does not (P)carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

27 Whoever does not bear his own cross(W) and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

27 Whoever doesn't carry his cross and follow me can't be my disciple.

28 For which of you, wanting to build a tower, does not first sit down [and] calculate the cost [to see] if he has [enough] {to complete it}?

28 For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?

28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

28 “For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t first sit down and calculate the cost(X) to see if he has enough to complete it?

28 "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. He will first sit down and estimate the cost to see whether he has enough money to finish it, won't he?

29 {Otherwise} [after] he has laid the foundation and is not able to finish [it], all who see [it] will begin to ridicule him,

29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him,

29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

29 Otherwise, after he has laid the foundation and cannot finish it, all the onlookers will begin to make fun of him,

29 Otherwise, if he lays a foundation and can't finish the building, everyone who watches will begin to ridicule him

30 saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish!'

30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’

30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

30 saying, ‘This man started to build and wasn’t able to finish.’

30 and say, "This person started a building but couldn't finish it.'

31 Or what king, going out to engage another king in battle, does not sit down first [and] deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand.

31 Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and (Q)consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand?

31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

31 “Or what king, going to war against another king, will not first sit down and decide if he is able with 10,000 to oppose the one who comes against him with 20,000?

31 "Or suppose a king is going to war against another king. He will first sit down and consider whether with 10,000 men he can fight the one coming against him with 20,000 men, won't he?

32 But if not, [while] [the other] is still far away, he sends an ambassador [and] asks {for terms of} peace.

32 Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends (o)a delegation and asks for terms of peace.

32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.

32 If not, while the other is still far off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.

32 If he can't, he will send a delegation to ask for terms of peace while the other king is still far away.

33 In the [same] way, therefore, every [one] of you who does not renounce all his own possessions {cannot be} my disciple.

33 So then, none of you can be My disciple who (R)does not give up all his own possessions.

33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

33 In the same way, therefore, every one of you who does not say good-bye to(f) all his possessions(Y) cannot be My disciple.

33 In the same way, none of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions."

Salt Without Taste Is Worthless

34 "Now salt [is] good, but if salt becomes tasteless, with what will it be made salty?

34 “Therefore, salt is good; but (S)if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned?

34 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

34 “Now,(Z) salt(AA) is good, but if salt should lose its taste, how will it be made salty?

34 "Now, salt is good. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can its flavor be restored?

35 It is usable neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; they throw it out. The one who has ears to hear, let him hear!"

35 It is useless either for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown out. (T)He who has ears to hear, (p)let him hear.”

35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

35 It isn’t fit for the soil or for the manure pile; they throw it out. Anyone who has ears to hear should listen!”(AB)

35 It's suitable neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. People throw it away. Let the person who has ears to hear, listen!"
