The Feeding Of Four Thousand
1 In those days, the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said to them:
1 In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them,
1 In those days, when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, (A)Jesus called His disciples and *said to them,
1 In(A) those days there was again a large crowd, and they had nothing to eat. He summoned(B) the disciples(C) and said to them,
1 At that time, after a large crowd again had gathered together with nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples and told them,
2 I have compassion on the multitude, because they have continued with me now three days, and have nothing to eat.
2 I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat:
2 “(B)I feel compassion for the (a)people because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat.
2 “I have compassion(D) on the crowd, because they’ve already stayed with Me three days and have nothing to eat.
2 "I have compassion for the crowd, because they've already been with me for three days and have nothing to eat.
3 And if I send them home fasting, they will faint on the way; for some of them have come from afar.
3 And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far.
3 If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance.”
3 If I send them home hungry,(a) they will collapse on the way,(E) and some of them have come a long distance.”
3 If I send them away to their homes hungry, they'll faint on the road. Some of them have come a long distance."
4 And his disciples answered him: Whence will any one be able to satisfy these men with bread, here in the wilderness?
4 And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?
4 And His disciples answered Him, “Where will anyone be able to find enough (b)bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?”
4 His disciples answered Him, “Where can anyone get enough bread here in this desolate place to fill(F) these people?”
4 His disciples answered him, "Where could anyone get enough bread to feed these people out here in the wilderness?"
5 And he asked them: How many loaves have you? And they said: Seven.
5 And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.
5 And He was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.”
5 “How many loaves do you have?” He asked them.“Seven,” they said.
5 He asked them, "How many loaves of bread do you have?" "Seven," they said.
6 And he commanded the multitude to recline on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before them: and they set them before the multitude.
6 And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.
6 And He *directed the (c)people to (d)sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to (e)serve to them, and they served them to the (f)people.
6 Then He commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke(G) the loaves, and kept on giving them to His disciples to set before the people. So they served the loaves to the crowd.
6 So he ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves and gave thanks. He broke them in pieces and kept giving them to his disciples to distribute. So they served them to the crowd.
7 And they had a few small fishes; and he blessed, and commanded that they also be set before them.
7 And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them.
7 They also had a few small fish; and (C)after He had blessed them, He ordered these to be (g)served as well.
7 They also had a few small fish, and when He had blessed them, He said these were to be served as well.
7 They also had a few small fish. He blessed them and said that the fish should also be distributed.
8 And they ate, and were satisfied; and they took up what remained of the broken pieces, seven baskets.
8 So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.
8 And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large (D)baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces.
8 They ate and were filled. Then they collected seven large baskets of leftover pieces.
8 The people ate and were filled. Then the disciples picked up the leftover pieces seven large baskets full.
9 And those who had eaten were about four thousand; and he sent them away.
9 And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.
9 About four thousand were there; and He sent them away.
9 About 4,000 men were there. He dismissed them
9 Now about 4,000 men were there. Then he sent them on their way.
10 And he immediately entered the ship with his disciples, and went into the regions of Dalmanutha.
10 And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.
10 And immediately He entered the boat with His disciples and came to the district of (E)Dalmanutha.
10 Then he told them, "I tell all of you with certainty, some people standing here will not experience death until they see the kingdom of God arrive with power."
Pharisees Demand A Sign
11 And the Pharisees came out, and began to put questions to him, asking of him a sign from heaven, that they might tempt him.
11 And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him.
11 (F)The Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, (G)seeking from Him a (h)sign from heaven, (i)to test Him.
11 The(H) Pharisees(I) came out and began to argue with Him, demanding of Him a sign(J) from heaven(K) to test(L) Him.
11 Immediately he got into a boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.
12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and said: Why does this generation seek for a sign? Verily I say to you, No sign will be given to this generation.
12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.
12 (H)Sighing deeply (j)in His spirit, He *said, “Why does this generation seek for a (k)sign? Truly I say to you, (l)(I)no (m)sign will be given to this generation.”
12 But sighing deeply in His spirit,(M) He said, “Why does this generation(N) demand a sign? I assure you:(O) No sign will be given to this generation!”
12 The Pharisees arrived and began arguing with Jesus. They tested him by demanding from him a sign from heaven.
13 And he left them, and entered the ship again, and departed to the opposite side.
13 And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side.
13 Leaving them, He again embarked and went away to the other side.
13 Then He left them, got on board the boat again, and went to the other side.
13 He sighed deeply in his spirit and remarked, "Why do those living today demand a sign? I tell all of you with certainty, no sign will be given to this generation."
Beware The Leaven Of The Pharisees And Herod
14 And they had forgotten to take bread; and they had but one loaf with them in the ship.
14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf.
14 And they had forgotten to take bread, and did not have more than one loaf in the boat with them.
14 They had forgotten to take bread and had only one loaf with them in the boat.
14 Leaving them, he got into a boat again and crossed to the other side.
15 And he charged them, saying: Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.
15 And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.
15 And He was giving orders to them, saying, “(J)Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of (K)Herod.”
15 Then(P) He commanded them: “Watch out! Beware of the yeast(Q) of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”(R)
15 Now the disciples had forgotten to take any bread along, but they had one loaf with them in the boat.
16 And they reasoned with one an other, saying: It is because we have no bread.
16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.
16 They began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread.
16 They were discussing among themselves that they did not have any bread.
16 Jesus had been warning them, "Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!"
17 And Jesus perceived it, and said to them: Why do you reason, because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive, nor understand? Is your heart still hardened?
17 And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?
17 And Jesus, aware of this, *said to them, “Why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread? (L)Do you not yet see or understand? Do you have a (n)hardened heart?
17 Aware of this, He said to them, “Why are you discussing that you do not have any bread? Don’t you understand or comprehend? Is your heart hardened?(S)
17 So they were discussing with one another the fact that they didn't have any bread.
18 Having eyes, do you not see? and having ears, do you not hear? and do you not remember?
18 Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?
18 Do you have eyes, and not see, and do you have ears, and not hear?(T)(c) And do you not remember?(U)
18 Knowing this, Jesus asked them, "Why are you discussing the fact that you don't have any bread? Don't you understand or perceive yet? Are your hearts hardened?
19 When I broke the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up? They said to him: Twelve.
19 When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.
19 when I broke (N)the five loaves for the five thousand, how many (O)baskets full of broken pieces you picked up?” They *said to Him, “Twelve.”
19 When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000, how many baskets full of pieces of bread did you collect?”“Twelve,” they told Him.
19 Do you have eyes, but fail to see? Do you have ears, but fail to hear? Don't you remember?
20 When I broke the seven among the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up? They replied: Seven.
20 And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.
20 “When I broke (P)the seven for the four thousand, how many large (Q)baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” And they *said to Him, “Seven.”
20 “When I broke the seven loaves for the 4,000, how many large baskets full of pieces of bread did you collect?”“Seven,” they said.
20 When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000, how many baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?" They told him, "Twelve."
A Blind Man Healed At Bethsaida
22 And he came to Bethsaida; and they brought to him a blind man, and besought him to touch him.
22 And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him.
22 And they *came to (S)Bethsaida. And they *brought a blind man to Jesus and *implored Him to (T)touch him.
22 Then he asked them, "Don't you understand yet?"
23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the village. And he spit on his eyes, and laid his hands on him, and asked him if he saw any thing.
23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought.
23 Taking the blind man by the hand, He (U)brought him out of the village; and after (V)spitting on his eyes and (W)laying His hands on him, He asked him, “Do you see anything?”
23 He took the blind man by the hand and brought him out of the village. Spitting(Y) on his eyes and laying His hands on(Z) him, He asked him, “Do you see anything?”
23 As they came to Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man to Jesus and begged him to touch him.
25 Then he again laid his hands on his eyes, and made him look up. And he was restored, and saw all things clearly.
25 After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.
25 Then again He laid His hands on his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and began to see everything clearly.
25 Again Jesus placed His hands on the man’s eyes, and he saw distinctly. He was cured and could see everything clearly.
25 The man looked up and said, "I see people, but they look like trees walking around."
26 And he sent him away to his house, and said: Neither go into the village, nor tell it to any one in the village.
26 And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.
26 Then Jesus placed his hands on the man's eyes again, and he saw clearly. His sight was restored, and he saw everything perfectly, even from a distance.
Peter's Confession At Caesarea Philippi
27 And Jesus and his disciples went out into the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the road, he asked his disciples, saying to them: Who do men say that I am?
27 And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am?
27 (Y)Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of (Z)Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say that I am?”
27 Jesus(AD) went out with His disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the road He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that I am?”
27 Then Jesus sent him home, saying, "Don't go into the village or tell anyone in the village."
28 They answered: John the Immerser; and others, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.
28 And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets.
28 (AA)They told Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.”
28 They answered Him, “John the Baptist;(AE) others, Elijah; still others, one of the prophets.”(AF)
28 Then Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he was asking his disciples, "Who do people say I am?"
29 And he said to them: But who say you that I am? Peter answered and said to him: Thou art the Christ.
29 And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.
29 And He continued by questioning them, “But who do you say that I am?” (AB)Peter *answered and *said to Him, “You are (q)the Christ.”
29 “But you,” He asked them again, “who do you say that I am?”Peter(AG) answered Him, “You are the Messiah!”(AH)
29 They answered him, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the prophets."
Jesus Predicts His Death And Resurrection
31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and the chief priests, and the scribes, and be put to death, and after three days rise again.
31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
31 (AD)And He began to teach them that (AE)the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
31 Then(AJ) He began to teach them that the Son of Man(AK) must suffer many things and be rejected(AL) by the elders,(AM) the chief priests, and the scribes,(AN) be killed, and rise(AO) after three days.(AP)
31 Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah!" Jesus sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.
32 And he spoke this saying plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
32 And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.
32 He was openly talking about this. So Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.
32 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man would have to suffer a great deal and be rejected by the elders, the high priests, and the scribes. Then he would be killed, but after three days he would rise again.
33 But he turned about, and, looking on his disciples, rebuked Peter, saying: Get behind me, adversary: for you are not thinking of the things of God, but of the things of men.
33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.
33 But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and *said, “Get behind Me, (AG)Satan; for you are not setting your mind on (s)God’s interests, but man’s.”
33 But turning around and looking at His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan,(AQ) because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns,(e) but man’s!”
33 He was speaking about this matter quite openly.
Taking Up One's Cross To Follow Jesus
34 And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them: Whoever determines to follow after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
34 And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and (AH)take up his cross and follow Me.
34 Summoning the crowd along with His disciples, He said to them, “If anyone wants to be My follower, he must deny himself,(AR) take up his cross,(AS) and follow Me.(AT)
34 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, Jesus rebuked Peter, saying, "Get behind me, Satan, because you're not thinking God's thoughts, but human thoughts!"
35 For whoever will save his life, shall lose it; but whoever will lose his life for my sake and the gospel s, shall save it.
35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.
35 For (AI)whoever wishes to save his (t)life will lose it, but whoever loses his (u)life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.
35 For whoever wants to save(AU) his life will lose it,(AV) but whoever loses(AW) his life(AX) because of Me(AY) and the gospel(AZ) will save it.(BA)
35 Then Jesus called the crowd to himself along with his disciples and told them, "If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself, pick up his cross, and follow me continuously,
36 For what will it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and lose his own life?
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?
36 because whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it.
38 For whoever will be ashamed of me, and my words, in this sinful and adulterous generation, of him the Son of man also will be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father, with the holy angels.
38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
38 For (AJ)whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, (AK)the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He (AL)comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
38 For whoever is ashamed(BH) of Me and of My words(BI) in this adulterous and sinful(BJ) generation,(BK) the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory(BL) of His Father(BM) with the holy(BN) angels.”(BO)
38 Indeed, what can a person give in exchange for his life?
