A Question From John The Baptist
1 When Jesus had closed this charge to His disciples, He left there to teach and preach in their towns.
1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

Jesus Speaks About John
7 But as they were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the desert to gaze at? A reed that is tossed to and fro by the wind?

8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.

9 If not, why did you go out there? To see a prophet?
9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.

10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

11 "I solemnly say to you, of all men born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has ever appeared; and yet the one who is least important in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
11 Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is (m)least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
11 “I assure you: Among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has appeared,(d) but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
11 I tell all of you with certainty, among those born of women no one has appeared who is greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least important person in the kingdom from heaven is greater than he.
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until the present moment the kingdom of heaven has been continuously taken by storm, and those who take it by storm are seizing it as a precious prize.

An Unresponsive Generation
16 "But to what can I compare the leaders of this age? They are like little children sitting in the market places and calling to their fellows in the game,

17 "'We played the wedding march for you, but you did not dance. We sang the funeral dirge, but you did not beat your breasts.'
17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
17 and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not (r)mourn.’
17 "A wedding song we played for you, the dance you all did scorn. A woeful dirge we chanted, too, but then you would not mourn.'
19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking with others, and they say, 'Just look at Him! A glutton and a wine-drinker, a chum of tax-collectors and notorious sinners!' And yet wisdom is vindicated by her doings!"
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

Woes Pronounced On Unrepentant Towns
20 Then He began to censure the cities in which His many, many wonder-works had been done, because they did not repent.

21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
21 “(T)Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, (U)Bethsaida! For if the (v)miracles had occurred in (V)Tyre and (W)Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in (w)(X)sackcloth and ashes.

21 "How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin! How terrible it will be for you, Bethsaida! Because if the miracles that happened in you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 Moreover, I tell you, on the day of judgment the punishment will be lighter for Tyre and Sidon than for you!
22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

23 And you, Capernaum, are you to be exalted to heaven? No, you belong to the regions of the dead! For if the wonder-works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have continued until today.
23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
23 And you, (AA)Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will (AB)descend to (AC)Hades; for if the (x)miracles had occurred in (AD)Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day.
23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to Hades.(R) For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until today.
23 "And you, Capernaum! You won't be lifted up to heaven, will you? You'll go down to Hell! Because if the miracles that happened in you had taken place in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
24 But I tell you, on the day of judgment the punishment will be lighter for the land of Sodom than for you!"

A Yoke That Is Easy
25 At that time Jesus said, "I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for concealing these matters from wise and learned men, and for revealing them to little children.
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
25 (AG)At that (y)time Jesus said, “I praise You, (AH)Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that (AI)You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants.

27 All things have been entrusted to me by my Father, and no one but the Father perfectly knows the Son, and no one but the Son perfectly knows the Father, and the one to whom the Son chooses to make Him known.
27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
