A Question From John The Baptist

1 And it came to pass, when Jesus ended directing his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

1 (A)When Jesus had finished (a)giving instructions to His twelve disciples, He departed from there (B)to teach and (b)preach in their cities.

1 When Jesus had finished giving orders to His 12 disciples, He moved on from there to teach and preach in their towns.(A)

1 When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he left there to teach and preach in their home towns.

2 And John having heard in the prison the works of the Christ, having sent two of his disciples,

2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

2 (C)Now when (D)John, (c)while imprisoned, heard of the works of Christ, he sent word by his disciples

2 When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent a message by his disciples(B)

2 Now when John heard in prison about the activities of the Messiah, he sent a message by his disciples

3 said to him, 'Art thou He who is coming, or for another do we look?'

3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?

3 and said to Him, “Are You (E)the (d)Expected One, or shall we look for someone else?”

3 and asked Him, “Are You the One who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”(C)

3 and asked him, "Are you the Coming One, or should we wait for someone else?"

4 And Jesus answering said to them, 'Having gone, declare to John the things that ye hear and see,

4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:

4 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see:

4 Jesus replied to them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see:

4 Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and observe:

5 blind receive sight, and lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and deaf hear, dead are raised, and poor have good news proclaimed,

5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

5 (F)the blind receive sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the (G)poor have the (e)gospel preached to them.

5 the blind see, the lame walk, those with skin diseases are healed,(a) the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news.(D)

5 the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the destitute hear the good news.

6 and happy is he who may not be stumbled in me.'

6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

6 And blessed is he (f)who (H)does not (g)take offense at Me.”

6 And if anyone is not offended because of Me, he is blessed.”(E)

6 How blessed is anyone who is not offended by me!"

Jesus Speaks About John

7 And as they are going, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, 'What went ye out to the wilderness to view? -- a reed shaken by the wind?

7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

7 As these men were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into (I)the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

7 As these men went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?(F)

7 As they were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John. "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

8 But what went ye out to see? -- a man clothed in soft garments? lo, those wearing the soft things are in the kings' houses.

8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.

8 (h)But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ (i)palaces!

8 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? Look, those who wear soft clothes are in kings’ palaces.

8 Really, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fancy clothes? See, those who wear fancy clothes live in kings' houses.

9 But what went ye out to see? -- a prophet? yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet,

9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.

9 (j)But what did you go out to see? (J)A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet.

9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and far more than a prophet.(G)

9 Really, what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and even more than a prophet!

10 for this is he of whom it hath been written, Lo, I do send My messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.

10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

10 This is the one about whom it (k)is written,(K)Behold, I send My messenger (l)ahead of You,Who will prepare Your way before You.’

10 This is the one it is written about:Look, I am sending My messenger ahead of You;(b)he will prepare Your way before You.(H)(c)

10 This is the man about whom it is written, "See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'

11 Verily I say to you, there hath not risen, among those born of women, a greater than John the Baptist, but he who is least in the reign of the heavens is greater than he.

11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

11 Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is (m)least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

11 “I assure you: Among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has appeared,(d) but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

11 I tell all of you with certainty, among those born of women no one has appeared who is greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least important person in the kingdom from heaven is greater than he.

12 'And, from the days of John the Baptist till now, the reign of the heavens doth suffer violence, and violent men do take it by force,

12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

12 (L)From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven (n)suffers violence, and violent men (o)take it by force.

12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been suffering violence,(e) and the violent have been seizing it by force.

12 "From the days of John the Baptist until the present, the kingdom from heaven has been forcefully advancing, and violent people have been attacking it,

13 for all the prophets and the law till John did prophesy,

13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

13 For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John.

13 For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John;

13 because the Law and all the Prophets prophesied up to the time of John.

14 and if ye are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who was about to come;

14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.

14 And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is (M)Elijah who (p)was to come.

14 if you’re willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who is to come.(I)

14 If you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.

15 he who is having ears to hear -- let him hear.

15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

15 (N)He who has ears to hear, (q)let him hear.

15 Anyone who has ears(f) should listen!(J)

15 Let the person who has ears listen!

An Unresponsive Generation

16 'And to what shall I liken this generation? it is like little children in market-places, sitting and calling to their comrades,

16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,

16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places, who call out to the other children,

16 “To what should I compare this generation? It’s like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to each other:

16 "To what can I compare the people living today? They're like little children who sit in the marketplaces and shout to each other,

17 and saying, We piped unto you, and ye did not dance, we lamented to you, and ye did not smite the breast.

17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.

17 and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not (r)mourn.’

17 We played the flute for you,but you didn’t dance;we sang a lament,but you didn’t mourn!(g)

17 "A wedding song we played for you, the dance you all did scorn. A woeful dirge we chanted, too, but then you would not mourn.'

18 'For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a demon;

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.

18 For John came neither (O)eating nor (P)drinking, and they say, ‘(Q)He has a demon!’

18 For John did not come eating or drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’(K)

18 Because John didn't come eating or drinking, yet people say, "He has a demon!'

19 the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, Lo, a man, a glutton, and a wine-drinker, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners, and wisdom was justified of her children.'

19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a (s)drunkard, (R)a friend of tax collectors and (t)sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard,(L) a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’(M) Yet wisdom is vindicated(h) by her deeds.”(i)

19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, "Look, a glutton and a drunk, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Absolved from every act of sin, is wisdom by her kith and kin."

Woes Pronounced On Unrepentant Towns

20 Then began he to reproach the cities in which were done most of his mighty works, because they did not reform.

20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:

20 Then He began to denounce the cities in which most of His (u)(S)miracles were done, because they did not repent.

20 Then He proceeded to denounce the towns where most of His miracles were done, because they did not repent:

20 Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had taken place, because they didn't repent.

21 'Woe to thee, Chorazin! woe to thee, Bethsaida! because, if in Tyre and Sidon had been done the mighty works that were done in you, long ago in sackcloth and ashes they had reformed;

21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

21 (T)Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, (U)Bethsaida! For if the (v)miracles had occurred in (V)Tyre and (W)Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in (w)(X)sackcloth and ashes.

21 “Woe to you, Chorazin!(N) Woe to you, Bethsaida!(O) For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,(P) they would have repented in sackcloth and ashes long ago!

21 "How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin! How terrible it will be for you, Bethsaida! Because if the miracles that happened in you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

22 but I say to you, to Tyre and Sidon it shall be more tolerable in a day of judgment than for you.

22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

22 Nevertheless I say to you, (Y)it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in (Z)the day of judgment than for you.

22 But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment(Q) than for you.

22 Indeed I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on Judgment Day than for you!

23 'And thou, Capernaum, which unto the heaven wast exalted, unto hades shalt be brought down, because if in Sodom had been done the mighty works that were done in thee, it had remained unto this day;

23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

23 And you, (AA)Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will (AB)descend to (AC)Hades; for if the (x)miracles had occurred in (AD)Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day.

23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to Hades.(R) For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until today.

23 "And you, Capernaum! You won't be lifted up to heaven, will you? You'll go down to Hell! Because if the miracles that happened in you had taken place in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.

24 but I say to you, to the land of Sodom it shall be more tolerable in a day of judgment than to thee.'

24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

24 Nevertheless I say to you that (AE)it will be more tolerable for the land of (AF)Sodom in the day of judgment, than for you.”

24 But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

24 Indeed I tell you, it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom on Judgment Day than for you!"

A Yoke That Is Easy

25 At that time Jesus answering said, 'I do confess to Thee, Father, Lord of the heavens and of the earth, that thou didst hide these things from wise and understanding ones, and didst reveal them to babes.

25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

25 (AG)At that (y)time Jesus said, “I praise You, (AH)Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that (AI)You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants.

25 At that time Jesus said,(S) “I praise(j) You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to infants.(T)

25 At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from wise and intelligent people and have revealed them to infants.

26 Yes, Father, because so it was good pleasure before Thee.

26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.

26 Yes, (AJ)Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight.

26 Yes, Father, because this was Your good pleasure.(k)

26 Yes, Father, because this is what was pleasing to you.

27 All things were delivered to me by my Father, and none doth know the Son, except the Father, nor doth any know the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son may wish to reveal Him.

27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

27 (AK)All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father (AL)except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.

27 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows(l) the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son desires(m) to reveal Him.(U)

27 All things have been entrusted to me by my Father. No one fully knows the Son except the Father, and no one fully knows the Father except the Son and the person to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28 'Come unto me, all ye labouring and burdened ones, and I will give you rest,

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

28 (AM)Come to Me, all (z)who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.

28 “Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.(V)

28 "Come to me, all of you who are weary and loaded down with burdens, and I will give you rest.

29 take up my yoke upon you, and learn from me, because I am meek and humble in heart, and ye shall find rest to your souls,

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

29 Take My yoke upon you and (AN)learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and (AO)you will find rest for your souls.

29 All of you, take up My yoke and learn from Me,(W) because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for yourselves.(X)

29 Place my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble, and you will find rest for your souls,

30 for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.'

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

30 For (AP)My yoke is (aa)easy and My burden is light.”

30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

30 because my yoke is pleasant, and my burden is light."
