Seven Woes Pronounced On The Scribes And Pharisees
3 Therefore practice and lay to heart everything that they tell preach but do not practice.
3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
3 therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.
3 Therefore do whatever they tell you, and observe it. But don’t do what they do,(b) because they don’t practice what they teach.(D)
3 so do whatever they tell you and follow it, but stop doing what they do, because they don't do what they say.
4 While they make up heavy loads and pile them on other men's shoulder's they decline, themselves, to lift a finger to move them.
4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
4 (C)They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.
4 They tie up heavy loads that are hard to carry(c) and put them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves aren’t willing to lift a finger(d) to move them.(E)
4 They tie up burdens that are heavy and unbearable and lay them on people's shoulders, but they refuse to lift a finger to remove them.
5 All their actions are done to attract attention. They widen their phylacteries, and increase the size of their tassels,
5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
5 But they do all their deeds (D)to be noticed by men; for they (E)broaden their (a)phylacteries and lengthen (F)the tassels of their garments.
5 They do everything(e) to be observed by others: They enlarge their phylacteries(f)(F) and lengthen their tassels.(g)(G)
5 "They do everything to be seen by people. They increase the size of their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments.
7 and to be greeted in the markets with respect, and to be called 'Rabbi' for everybody.
7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
7 greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by people.
7 to be greeted in the marketplaces, and to be called "Rabbi' by people.
8 But do not allow yourselves to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Father, the heavenly Father.
8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
8 “But as for you, do not be called ‘Rabbi,’ because you have one Teacher,(h) and you are all brothers.(I)
8 "But you are not to be called "Rabbi,' because you have only one teacher, and all of you are brothers.
Jesus Condemns Their Hypocrisy
13 But alas for you, Teachers of the Law and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You turn the key of the Kingdom of Heaven in men's faces. For you do not go in yourselves, nor yet allow those who try to go in to do so.
13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
13 “(N)But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, (O)because you shut off the kingdom of heaven (c)from (d)people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.
13 “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You lock up the kingdom of heaven from people. For you don’t go in, and you don’t allow those entering to go in.(M)
13 "How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door to the kingdom from heaven in people's faces. You don't go in yourselves, and you don't allow those who are trying to enter to go in.
14 Alas for you, Teachers of the Law and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You destroy widow's houses, even while pretending to make long prayers; therefore you shall receive greater condemnation.
14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
14 [(e)Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because (P)you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive greater condemnation.]
14 [“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You devour widows’ houses and make long prayers just for show.(j) This is why you will receive a harsher punishment.](k)
14 "How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You devour widows' houses and say long prayers to cover it up. Therefore, you will receive greater condemnation!
15 Alas for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You scour land and sea to make a single convert, and, when he is gained, you make him twice as deserving of the Pit as you are yourselves.
15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one (f)(Q)proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of (g)(R)hell as yourselves.
15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to make one proselyte,(N) and when he becomes one, you make him twice as fit for hell(l) as you are!
15 "How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to make a single convert, and when this happens you make him twice as fit for hell as you are.
16 Alas for you, you blind guides! You say 'if any answer by the Temple, his oath counts for nothing; but, if any one swears by the gold of the Temple, his oath is binding him'!
16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
16 “Woe to you, (S)blind guides, who say, ‘(T)Whoever swears by the (h)temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the (i)temple is obligated.’
16 “Woe to you, blind guides,(O) who say, ‘Whoever takes an oath by the sanctuary, it means nothing. But whoever takes an oath(P) by the gold of the sanctuary is bound by his oath.’(m)
16 "How terrible it will be for you, blind guides! You say, "Whoever swears an oath by the sanctuary is excused, but whoever swears an oath by the gold of the sanctuary must keep his oath.'
17 Fools that you are and blind! Which is the more important? The gold? Or the Temple which has given sacredness to the gold?
17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
17 You fools and blind men! (U)Which is (j)more important, the gold or the (k)temple that sanctified the gold?
17 You blind fools! What is more important, the gold or the sanctuary that made the gold holy?
18 You say, too, 'If any one swears by the altar, his oath counts for nothing, but, if any one swears by the offering placed on it, his oath is binding on him'!
18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
18 And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing, but whoever swears by the (l)offering on it, he is obligated.’
18 Also, ‘Whoever takes an oath by the altar, it means nothing. But whoever takes an oath by the gift that is on it is bound by his oath.’(o)
18 Again you say, "Whoever swears an oath by the altar is excused, but whoever swears by the gift that is on it must keep his oath.'
19 Blind indeed! Which is the more important? The offering? or the altar which gives sacredness to the offering?
19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
19 You blind men, (V)which is (m)more important, the (n)offering, or the altar that sanctifies the (o)offering?
19 You blind men! Which is more important, the gift or the altar that makes the gift holy?
20 Therefore a man, swearing by the altar, swears by it and by all that is on it,
20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
20 Therefore, the one who takes an oath by the altar takes an oath by it and by everything on it.
20 Therefore, the one who swears an oath by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.
21 and a man, swearing by the Temple, swears by it and by him who dwells in it,
21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
21 And (r)whoever swears by the (s)temple, swears both by (t)the temple and by Him who (W)dwells within it.
21 The one who swears an oath by the sanctuary swears by it and by the one who lives there.
22 while a man, swearing by Heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits upon it.
22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
22 And (u)whoever swears by heaven, (X)swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.
22 And the one who takes an oath by heaven takes an oath by God’s throne(S) and by Him who sits on it.(T)
22 And the one who swears an oath by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who sits on it.
23 Alas for you, Teachers of the Law and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You pay tithes on mint, fennel, and caraway seed, and have neglected the weightier matters of the Law--justice, mercy, and good faith. These last you ought to have put into practice, without neglecting the first.
23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
23 “(Y)Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and (v)cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.
23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You pay a tenth of(q) mint, dill, and cumin,(r) yet you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice,(U) mercy, and faith. These things should have been done without neglecting the others.
23 "How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your mint, dill, and cummin, but have neglected the more important matters of the Law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness. These are the things you should have practiced, without neglecting the others.
25 Alas for you, Teachers of the Law and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are filled with the results of greed and self-indulgence.
25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (AA)you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full (w)of robbery and self-indulgence.
25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed(s) and self-indulgence!(W)
25 "How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but on the inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.
26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the dish, so that the outside may become clean as well.
26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
26 You blind Pharisee, first (AB)clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.
26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup,(t) so the outside of it(u) may also become clean.
26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that its outside may also be clean.
27 Alas for you, Teachers of the Law and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You are like whitewashed tombs, which indeed look fair outside, while inside they are filled with dead men's bones and all kinds of filth.
27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
27 “(AC)Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs,(X) which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every impurity.
27 "How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that look beautiful on the outside but inside are full of dead people's bones and every kind of impurity.
28 It is the same with you. Outwardly, and to others, you have the look of religious men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and sin.
28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
28 So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
28 In the same way, on the outside you seem righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
28 In the same way, on the outside you look righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Jesus Predicts Their Punishment
29 Alas for you, Teachers of the Law and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You build the tombs of the Prophets, and decorate the monuments of religious men,
29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
29 “(AD)Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,
29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,
29 "How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous.
30 and say 'Had we been living in the days of our ancestors, we should have taken part in their murder of the Prophets!
30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
30 and say, ‘If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’
30 and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn’t have taken part with them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’(v)
30 Then you say, "If we had been living in the days of our ancestors, we would have had no part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'
31 By doing this you are furnishing evidence against yourselves that you are true children of the men who murdered the Prophets.
31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
31 You, therefore, testify against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.
31 Therefore, you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets.
34 That is why I send you Prophets, wise men, and Teachers of the Law, some of whom you will crucify and kill, and some of whom you will scourge in your Synagogues, and persecute from town to town;
34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
34 “(AH)Therefore, behold, (AI)I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will (AJ)scourge in your synagogues, and (AK)persecute from city to city,
34 This is why I am sending you prophets,(AA) sages, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues(AB) and hound from town to town.
34 "That is why I am sending you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will whip in your synagogues and persecute from town to town.
35 in order that upon your heads may fall every drop of innocent 'blood split on earth,' from the blood of innocent Abel down to that of Zechariah, Barachiah's son, whom you murdered between the Temple and the altar.
35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
35 so that upon you may fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous (AL)Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the (AM)son of Berechiah, whom (AN)you murdered between the (ab)temple and the altar.
35 So all the righteous blood shed on the earth will be charged to you,(y) from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah,(AC) son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.(AD)
35 As a result, you will be held accountable for all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of the righteous Abel to the blood of Berechiah's son Zechariah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.
The Lament Over Jerusalem
37 Jerusalem! Jerusalem! She who slays the Prophets and stones the messengers sent to her--Oh, how often have I wished to gather your children round me, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not came!
37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
37 “(AP)Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who (AQ)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, (AR)the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.
37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem!(AF) She who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks(z) under her wings, yet you were not willing!(AG)
37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones to death those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling!
39 For nevermore, I tell you, shall you see me, until you say-- 'Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord!'"
39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
39 For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘(AT)Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
39 For I tell you, you will never see Me again until you say, ‘He who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One’!”(AI)(aa)
39 I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, "How blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!'"
