He knew well that it was because of enmity that they had brought Jesus before him.

For he recognized that it was through spite that the high priests had handed him over.

This aroused bitter indignation among the high priest and his followers who were of the sect of the Sadducees,

"The patriarchs out of jealousy sold Joseph into Egypt.

When they saw the crowds, the Jews were filled with jealousy, and began to contradict Paul's statements, and to abuse him.

Or do you suppose that it is in vain that the Scripture says, "The spirit which has its home in us yearns over us unto jealousy?"
