Jesus Is Raised

1 Now as the Sabbath day ended and the first day of the week [i.e., Sunday] approached [Note: See Mark 16:1-2 for the exact timing], Mary from Magdala and the other Mary [i.e., Jesus' mother. See Matt. 27:56] went to look at the grave site.

1 (A)Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, (B)Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave.

1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

1 After the Sabbath,(A) as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to view the tomb.

1 After the Sabbaths, around dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to take a look at the burial site.

2 Now there had been a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord had descended from heaven and, [having] come to roll away the stone, was [now] sitting on it.

2 And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for (C)an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away (D)the stone and sat upon it.

2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

2 Suddenly there was a violent earthquake, because an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and approached the tomb. He rolled back the stone and was sitting on it.(B)

2 Suddenly, there was a powerful earthquake, because an angel of the Lord had come down from heaven, approached the stone, rolled it away, and was sitting on top of it.

3 He appeared as [brilliant] lightning and his clothing was white as snow.

3 And (E)his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow.

3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

3 His appearance was like lightning, and his robe was as white as snow.(C)

3 His appearance was bright as lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.

4 And the guards shook with fear at seeing him, and became as dead men.

4 The guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men.

4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

4 The guards were so shaken from fear of him that they became like dead men.

4 Trembling from fear, even the guards themselves became catatonic.

5 The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know you are looking for Jesus, who has been crucified.

5 The angel said to the women, “(a)(F)Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified.

5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

5 But the angel told the women, “Don’t be afraid, because I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.(D)

5 Responding to the women, the angel said, "Stop being frightened! I know you're looking for Jesus, who was crucified.

6 He is not here, for He has risen just as He said [He would]. Come and see the place where the Lord had been lying,

6 He is not here, for He has risen, (G)just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.

6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

6 He is not here! For He has been resurrected, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.(E)

6 He is not here. He has been raised, just as he said. Come and see the place where he was lying.

7 then go quickly and tell His disciples, 'He has risen from the dead and is [now] going on ahead of you into Galilee. You will see Him there.' Now [that is all] I have to tell you."

7 Go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you (H)into Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you.”

7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

7 Then go quickly and tell His disciples,(F) ‘He has been raised from the dead. In fact, He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see Him there.’ Listen, I have told you.”(G)

7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead. He is going ahead of you into Galilee, and you will see him there. Remember, I have told you!"

8 So, they left the grave site quickly, with fear and great joy, and ran to give the message to His disciples.

8 And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to His disciples.

8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

8 So, departing quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, they ran to tell His disciples the news.

8 So they quickly left the tomb, terrified but also ecstatic, and ran to tell Jesus' disciples.

9 Suddenly Jesus met them and gave them greetings. They approached Him and took hold of His feet [and knelt] to worship Him.

9 And behold, Jesus met them (b)and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him.

9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.

9 Just then(a) Jesus met them and said, “Good morning!” They came up, took hold of His feet, and worshiped Him.(H)

9 Suddenly, Jesus met them and said, "Greetings!" They went up to him, took hold of his feet, and worshipped him.

10 Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers [i.e., the disciples, that you have seen me], so they can head for Galilee where they will see me."

10 Then Jesus *said to them, (c)(I)Do not be afraid; go and take word to (J)My brethren to leave (K)for Galilee, and there they will see Me.”

10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

10 Then Jesus told them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see Me there.”(I)

10 Then Jesus told them, "Stop being frightened! Go and tell my brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see me there."

The Guards Report The Body Stolen

11 Now while these women were on their way, some of the guards entered the city and began telling the leading priests everything that had happened.

11 Now while they were on their way, some of (L)the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened.

11 Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.

11 As they were on their way, some of the guards came into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened.

11 While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and told the high priests everything that had happened.

12 And when they had assembled with the [Jewish] elders and conferred with them, they offered large sums of money to the soldiers,

12 And when they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers,

12 And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,

12 After the priests(b) had assembled with the elders and agreed on a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money

12 So they met with the elders and agreed on a plan to give the soldiers a large amount of money.

13 saying, "We want you to say, 'Jesus' disciples came at night and stole his body while we were asleep.'

13 and said, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we were asleep.’

13 Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.

13 and told them, “Say this, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole Him while we were sleeping.’

13 They said, "Say that Jesus' disciples came at night and stole him while you were sleeping.

14 And if the governor hears about this [plot], we will persuade him [i.e., not to punish you for negligence], so you will not have to worry about that."

14 And if this should come to (M)the governor’s ears, we will win him over and (d)keep you out of trouble.”

14 And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.

14 If this reaches the governor’s ears,(c) we will deal with(d) him and keep you out of trouble.”(J)

14 If this is reported to the governor, we'll personally persuade him to keep you out of trouble."

15 So, they took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story [i.e., that Jesus' body had been stolen by His disciples] was told widely among the Jews, and continues to be told to this day.

15 And they took the money and did as they had been instructed; and this story was widely (N)spread among the Jews, and is (O)to this day.

15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.

15 So they took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been spread among Jewish people to this day.(K)

15 So the soldiers took the money, did as they were instructed, and this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.

The Great Commission

16 But the eleven disciples [i.e., apostles] went to the mountain in Galilee where Jesus had ordered them to go.

16 But the eleven disciples proceeded (P)to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated.

16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.

16 The 11 disciples traveled to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them.(L)

16 The eleven disciples went into Galilee to the hillside to which Jesus had directed them.

17 And when they met Him [there], they [knelt down] to worship Him; but some [still] had doubts [i.e., about His resurrection. See John 20:25].

17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but (Q)some were doubtful.

17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.

17 When they saw Him, they worshiped,(e) but some doubted.

17 When they saw him, they worshipped him, though some had doubts.

18 Then Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.

18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, (R)All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

18 Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.(M)

18 Then Jesus approached them and told them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

19 So, as you go, make disciples out of people from all the nations, then immerse believers [See Mark 16:15-16] into the name of [i.e., to enter a relationship with] the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

19 (e)(S)Go therefore and (T)make disciples of (U)all the nations, (V)baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

19 Go, therefore, and make disciples(N) of(f) all nations,(O) baptizing(P) them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

19 Therefore, as you go, disciple people in all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

20 [Then] go on teaching them [i.e., these new converts] to obey everything I have commanded you and my presence will be with you always, even to the end of the age.

20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, (W)I am with you (f)always, even to (X)the end of the age.”

20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember,(g) I am with you always,(h) to the end of the age.”(Q)

20 teaching them to obey everything that I've commanded you. And remember, I am with you each and every day until the end of the age."
