So you gave them up into the hands of their enemies who were cruel to them. In the time of their trouble, when they prayed to you, you listened to them from heaven. In your great mercy you gave them saviors, who made them free from the hands of their enemies.

Jehovah made a solemn promise. He will not abandon you. You are his people for his great name's sake.

Our fathers in Egypt did not understand your wonders. They did not remember your abundant kindnesses. But they rebelled by the Red Sea.

Jehovah says: Israel, remember this! Remember that you are my servant. I created you to be my servant, and I will never forget you.

We have not come to destruction because of Jehovah's loving kindness. His mercies are without end.

I acted so that my name would not be dishonored among the nations who had watched me bring the Israelites out of Egypt.

To Jehovah our God belong mercies and forgiveness. We have rebelled against him.

I am Jehovah. I have not changed! You are the sons of Jacob. You have not yet been destroyed!

The pillar

And you went before them by day in a pillar of cloud and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light on the way they were to go.

Jehovah went in front of them in a pillar of cloud to show them the way during the day. He went in front of them in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel at night.

Jehovah's column of smoke stayed over the tent during the day. There was fire in the smoke at night. This way all the Israelites could see the column throughout their travels.

That day the tent of the words of God's Covenant was set up. The column of smoke covered it. The smoke over the tent glowed like fire from evening until morning.

they will tell it to the people who live in this land. These people have already heard that you, Jehovah, are with us, that you appear in plain sight when your cloud stops over us, and that you go before us in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.

Then Jehovah will create over the entire area of Mount Zion and over her assemblies a cloud by day, even smoke, and the brightness of a flaming fire by night. A canopy (shelter) will be over all as the glory (honor).

Brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant about how all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea.
