Wisdom's Banquet

1 Wisdom built her house. She carved her seven pillars.

1 Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:

1 Wisdom has (A)built her house,She has hewn out her seven pillars;

2 She prepared her food and mixed her wine. She furnished her table.

2 She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.

2 She has prepared her food, she has spiced her wine, and she also has set her dining table.

3 She sent her maidens. She cried on the highest places of the city,

3 She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,

3 She has (E)sent out her maidens, she (F)callsFrom the (G)tops of the heights of the city:

3 She has sent out her female servants;(E)she calls out from the highest points of the city:(F)

3 She has sent out her young women, while calling out from the heights of the city,

4 Who is simple? Let him turn in here! He who lacks understanding, she says to him,

4 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,

4 (H)Whoever is (b)naive, let him turn in here!”To him who (I)lacks (c)understanding she says,

4 “Whoever is inexperienced, enter here!”To the one who lacks sense,(G) she says,

4 "Let whoever is naive, turn in here." To anyone lacking sense, she says,

5 Come eat my bread, and drink the wine that I have mixed.

5 Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.

5 “Come, (J)eat of my foodAnd drink of the wine I have mixed.

5 “Come, eat my bread,(H)and drink the wine I have mixed.

5 "Come! Eat my food, and drink the wine that I have mixed.

6 Forsake the foolish, and live. Travel in the way of understanding.

6 Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

6 (d)Forsake your folly and (K)live,And (L)proceed in the way of understanding.”

6 Leave inexperience behind, and you will live;pursue the way of understanding.

6 Leave your naive ways, and live. Walk in the path of understanding."

Wisdom Prolongs Life

7 Correct a scoffer and get dishonor for yourself. Rebuke a wicked man and receive insults.

7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.

7 He who (M)corrects a scoffer gets dishonor for himself,And he who reproves a wicked man gets (e)insults for himself.

7 The one who corrects a mockerwill bring dishonor on himself;the one who rebukes a wicked man will get hurt.(a)

7 Whoever corrects a mocker invites only insult, and whoever rebukes the wicked will himself become stained.

8 Correct a scoffer (mocker) (scorner) and he will hate you. Reprove a wise man and he will love you.

8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

9 Give instruction to a wise man and he will become even wiser. Teach a righteous man, and he will increase his learning (insight).

Foolishness' Banquet

10 Respect for Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom. Knowledge of the holy One is understanding (discernment) (truth) (wisdom).

10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

10 The (Q)fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,(L)and the knowledge of the Holy One(M) is understanding.

10 The fear of the LORD is where wisdom begins, and knowing holiness demonstrates understanding.

11 I will increase your days. I will add more years to your life.

11 For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.

11 For (R)by me your days will be multiplied,And years of life will be added to you.

11 For by Wisdom your days will be many,and years will be added to your life.

11 For because of me you will live a long life, and years will be added to your life.

12 When you are wise you are wise for yourself. When you scoff you bear it alone.

12 If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

12 If you are wise, you are wise (S)for yourself,And if you (T)scoff, you alone will bear it.

12 If you are wise, you are wise for your own benefit;(N)if you mock, you alone will bear the consequences.”

12 If you are wise, your wisdom will assist you. If you mock, you alone will be held responsible.

The Way Of Folly

13 A foolish woman is noisy. She has no sense at all.

13 A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.

13 The (f)woman of folly is (U)boisterous,She is (g)naive and (V)knows nothing.

13 The woman Folly is rowdy;(O)she is gullible and knows nothing.(P)

13 The foolish woman is loud, undisciplined, and without knowledge.

14 She sits at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,

14 For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,

14 She sits at the doorway of her house,On a seat by (W)the high places of the city,

14 She sits by the doorway of her house,on a seat at the highest point of the city,

14 She sits at the entrance of her house, on a seat high above the city.

15 to call those who pass by who go straight on their way:

15 To call passengers who go right on their ways:

15 Calling to those who pass by,Who are making their paths straight:

15 calling to those who pass by,who go straight ahead on their paths:(Q)

15 She calls out to those passing by on the road, who are minding their own business,

16 Let the inexperienced (naive) one come in here, and to the person who lacks understanding she says:

16 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,

16 (X)Whoever is (h)naive, let him turn in here,”And to him who lacks (i)understanding she says,

16 “Whoever is inexperienced, enter here!”To the one who lacks sense, she says,

16 "Whoever is naive, turn in here!" And to anyone lacking sense, she says,

17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.

17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.

17 “Stolen water is sweet;And (Y)bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”

17 “Stolen water is sweet,and bread eaten secretly is tasty!”(R)

18 He does not know the dead are there. Her guests are in the depths of the grave.

18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

18 But he does not know that the (j)dead are there,That her guests are in the (Z)depths of Sheol.

18 But he doesn’t know that the departed spirits are there,(S)that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.(T)

18 But he does not realize that the dead lurk there, and her invited guests wind up in the depths of Sheol.
