Now as for the
Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the sons of Judah could not drive them out; so the Jebusites live with the sons of Judah at Jerusalem until this day.
But they did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites live in the midst of Ephraim to this day, and they became forced laborers.
But the sons of Manasseh could not take possession of these cities, because the Canaanites persisted in living in that land.
For if you ever go back and
cling to the rest of these nations, these which remain among you, and intermarry with them, so that you associate with them and they with you,
Now the Lord was with Judah, and they took possession of the hill country; but they could not
drive out the inhabitants of the valley because they had iron chariots.
Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not drive it out?”
then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and
destroy all their figured stones, and destroy all their molten images and demolish all their high places;
and when the Lord your God delivers them before you and you
defeat them, then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them and show no favor to them.
Only in the cities of these peoples that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, you shall not leave alive anything that breathes.
1 Samuel 15:3
Now go and strike Amalek and
utterly destroy all that he has, and do not spare him; but put to death both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”
So the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.
