1 For the choir director; (a)upon an eight-stringed lyre. A Psalm of David.Help, Lord, for (A)the godly man ceases to be,For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.

1 {To the chief Musician upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David.} Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.

1 For the choir director: according to Sheminith.(A) A Davidic psalm.Help, Lord, for no faithful one remains;the loyal have disappeared from the human race.(B)

1 Help, LORD, for godly people no longer exist; trustworthy people have disappeared from humanity.

1 Save and help and rescue, Lord, for godly people cease to be,For the faithful vanish from among the sons of men.

2 They (B)speak (b)falsehood to one another;With (C)flattering (c)lips and with a double heart they speak.

2 They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.

2 They lie to one another;they speak with flattering lips and deceptive hearts.(C)

2 Everyone speaks lies to his neighbor; they speak with flattering lips and hidden motives.

2 They speak deceitful and worthless words to one another; With flattering lips and a double heart they speak.

3 May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,The tongue that (D)speaks great things;

3 The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:

3 May the Lord cut off all flattering lipsand the tongue that speaks boastfully.(D)

3 The LORD will cut off all slippery lips, and the tongue that boasts great things,

3 May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,The tongue that speaks great things [in boasting];

4 Who (E)have said, “With our tongue we will prevail; Our lips are (d)our own; who is lord over us?”

4 Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?

4 They say, “Through our tongues we have power;(a)our lips are our own—who can be our master?”(E)

4 those who say, "By our tongues we will prevail; our lips belong to us. Who is master over us?"

4 Who have said, “With our tongue we will prevail; Our lips are our own; who is lord and master over us?”

5 “Because of the (F)devastation of the afflicted, because of the groaning of the needy,Now (G)I will arise,” says the Lord; “I will (H)set him in the safety for which he longs.”

5 For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.

5 “Because of the oppression of the afflictedand the groaning of the poor,I will now rise up,” says the Lord.“I will put the one who longs for it in a safe place.”(F)

5 "Because the poor are being oppressed, because the needy are sighing, I will now arise," says the LORD, "I will establish in safety those who yearn for it."

5 “Because of the devastation of the afflicted, because of the groaning of the needy,Now I will arise,” says the Lord; “I will place him in the safety for which he longs.”

6 The (I)words of the Lord are pure words; As silver (J)tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.

6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

6 The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver refined in an earthen furnace, purified seven times.(G)

6 The words of the LORD are pure, like silver refined in an earthen furnace, purified seven times over.

6 The words and promises of the Lord are pure words,Like silver refined in an earthen furnace, purified seven times.

7 You, O Lord, will keep them; You will (K)preserve him from this generation forever.

7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

7 You, Lord, will guard us;(b)You will protect us(c) from this generation forever.(H)

7 You, LORD, will keep them safe, you will guard them from this generation forever.

7 You, O Lord, will preserve and keep them; You will protect him from this [evil] generation forever.

8 The (L)wicked strut about on every sideWhen (e)(M)vileness is exalted among the sons of men.

8 The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.

8 The wicked wander(d) everywhere, and what is worthless is exalted by the human race.(I)

8 The wicked, however, keep walking around, exalting the vileness of human beings. To the Director: A Davidic Psalm.

8 The wicked strut about [in pompous self-importance] on every side,As vileness is exalted and baseness is prized among the sons of men.
