A Night Prayer

1 When I call, answer me, my righteous God! When I was in distress, you set me free. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer.

1 (a)For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.(A)Answer me when (B)I call, O God (b)of my righteousness!You have (c)(C)relieved me in my distress;Be (D)gracious to me and (E)hear my prayer.

1 {To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm of David.} Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.

1 For the choir director: with stringed instruments.(A) A Davidic psalm.Answer me when I call,God, who vindicates me.(a)(B)You freed me from affliction;(C)be gracious to me and hear my prayer.

1 Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!You have freed me when I was hemmed in and relieved me when I was in distress;Be gracious to me and hear [and respond to] my prayer.

2 You people, how long will you malign my reputation? How long will you love what is vain and what is false? Interlude

2 O sons of men, how long will (F)my (d)honor become (G)a reproach?How long will you love (H)what is worthless and aim at (I)deception? (e)Selah.

2 O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah.

2 How long, exalted men, will my honor be insulted?(D)How long will you love what is worthless(E)and pursue a lie?Selah

2 O sons of men, how long will my honor and glory be [turned into] shame?How long will you [my enemies] love worthless (vain, futile) things and seek deception and lies? Selah.

3 But understand this: the LORD has set apart the godly for himself! The LORD will hear me when I cry out to him!

3 But know that the Lord has (f)(J)set apart the (K)godly man for Himself;The Lord (L)hears when I call to Him.

3 But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him.

3 Know that the Lord has set apartthe faithful for Himself;the Lord will hear when I call to Him.

3 But know that the Lord has set apart for Himself [and dealt wonderfully with] the godly man [the one of honorable character and moral courage—the one who does right].The Lord hears and responds when I call to Him.

4 Be angry, yet do not sin. Think about this when upon your beds, and be silent. Interlude

4 (g)(M)Tremble, (h)(N)and do not sin;(i)(O)Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

4 Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

4 Be angry(b) and do not sin;(F)on your bed, reflect in your heart and be still.(G)Selah

4 Tremble [with anger or fear], and do not sin;Meditate in your heart upon your bed and be still [reflect on your sin and repent of your rebellion].(A) Selah.

5 Offer sacrifices that are righteous, and put your confidence in the LORD.

5 Offer (j)the (P)sacrifices of righteousness,And (Q)trust in the Lord.

5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.

5 Offer sacrifices in righteousness(c)(H)and trust in the Lord.(I)

5 Offer righteous sacrifices;Trust [confidently] in the Lord.

6 Many are asking, "Who will help us to see better days?" LORD, may the light of your favor shine upon us.

6 Many are saying, “(R)Who will show us any good?”(S)Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O Lord!

6 There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.

6 Many are saying, “Who can show us anything good?”Look on us with favor, Lord.(J)

6 Many are saying, “Oh, that we might see some good!”Lift up the light of Your face upon us, O Lord.

7 You have given me more joy in my heart than at harvest times, when grain and wine abound.

7 You have put (T)gladness in my heart,More than when their grain and new wine abound.

7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.

7 You have put more joy in my heartthan they have when their grain and new wine abound.(K)

7 You have put joy in my heart,More than [others know] when their wheat and new wine have yielded abundantly.

8 I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, LORD, enable me to live securely. To the Director: For flutes. A Davidic Psalm

8 In peace I will (k)both (U)lie down and sleep,For You alone, O Lord, make me to (V)dwell in safety.

8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.

8 I will both lie down and sleep in peace,(L)for You alone, Lord, make me live in safety.(M)

8 In peace [and with a tranquil heart] I will both lie down and sleep,For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety and confident trust.
